“Do you understand (me)?” negotiating mutual understanding by using gaze and environmentally coupled gestures between two deaf signing participants

Abstract In this paper we explore the use of multimodal and multilingual semiotic resources in interactions between two deaf signing participants, a researcher and an asylum seeker. The focus is on the use of gaze and environmentally coupled gestures. Drawing on multimodal analysis and linguistic ethnography, we demonstrate how gaze and environmentally coupled gestures are effective semiotic resources for reaching mutual understanding. Artikkelissa tarkastellaan suomalaisen arkikeskustelun kehuja kolmen peruskysymyksen kautta: 1) millaisia kehut ovat rakenteeltaan, 2) miten kehut otetaan vastaan ja 3) millaisissa tilanteissa kehuja esitetaan ja mita niilla tehdaan? Tutkimus on metodiltaan keskustelunanalyyttinen: kehuja analysoidaan osana aitojen keskustelujen toiminnallista kudosta. This qualitative study explores the types of ethical dilemmas that Finnish managers working in reception centres for asylum seekers have encountered and whether the moral intensity of the ethical issues was observable in the ethical decision-making. It concludes that the majority of the managers interviewed encountered ethical dilemmas relating to the termination of reception services. The ethical dilemmas were stratified into seven groups: ambiguous or complete absence of relevant instructions, lack of support, conflicting values, withholding information, pressure, discretionary stress, and unjust decisions on asylum applications. Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan Rauni Mollbergin ohjaaman Tuntemattoman sotilaan vastaanottoa. Tutkimusta varten haastateltiin Tuntemattoman sotilaan uuden elokuvaversion katsojia ensi-illan jälkeen joulukuussa 1985 Helsingissä ja Jyväskylässä. Lisäksi tutustuttiin elokuvaan liittyneeseen lehtikirjoitteluun puolen vuoden ajan. Uuden elokuvan reseptiota verrataan alkuperäisen romaanin sekä Edvin Laineen ohjaaman vanhan Tuntemattoman vastaanottoon. Julkaisussa on englanninkielinen tiivistelmä.
