The primary aim of the present study was to investigate the acute gene expression responses of PGC-1 isoforms and PGC-1a target genes related to mitochondrial biogenesis (cytochrome C), angiogenesis (VEGF-A), and muscle hypertrophy (myostatin), after a resistance or endurance exercise bout. In addition, the study aimed to elucidate whether the expression changes of studied transcripts were linked to phosphorylation of AMPK and MAPK p38. Leg and joint stiffness in human hopping

The present study investigated the regulation of leg and joint stiffness in hopping at different intensity levels. Eight male subjects performed bilateral hopping at various intensity levels that were determined by peak vertical ground reaction force (GRF). In addition to the GRF, the measurements included hopping kinematics and electromyography (EMG) of selected leg muscles. While the leg and ankle joint stiffness remained invariant, the knee joint stiffness increased significantly (P<0.01) with the hopping intensity. The role of the vastus lateralis flap in head and neck reconstruction

The Vastus lateralis flap is a very versatile flap, easy to harvest and with a long pedicle. It can be harvested as a muscle, musculo-cutaneous or chimeric flap. It is particularly suit-able for head and neck reconstruction, as it allows for a two-team approach and can be tailored to the complex three-dimensional structure of this district. In this paper, we discuss our experience and a review of the literature on the use of the free Vastus lateralis flap in the head and neck region, analyzing its indications, advan-tages and limitations. We also provide technical tips to minimize donor site morbidity.
