Abstract Trying to solve the question of whether every T 1 topological space with a unique compatible quasi-proximity should be hereditarily compact, we show that it is true for product spaces as well as for locally hereditarily Lindelof spaces.

On Weakly Locally Uniformly Rotund Banach Spaces

Abstract We show that every normed space E with a weakly locally uniformly rotund norm has an equivalent locally uniformly rotund norm. After obtaining a σ -discrete network of the unit sphere S E for the weak topology we deduce that the space E must have a countable cover by sets of small local diameter, which in turn implies the renorming conclusion. This solves a question posed by Deville, Godefroy, Haydon, and Zizler. For a weakly uniformly rotund norm we prove that the unit sphere is always metrizable for the weak topology despite the fact that it may not have the Kadec property. Mappings of finite distortion: Removable singularities for locally homeomorphic mappings

Let f be a locally homeomorphic mapping of finite distortion in dimension larger than two. We show that when the distortion of f satisfies a certain subexponential integrability condition, small sets are removable. The smallness is measured by a weighted modulus.

In this chapter we establish the optimal regularity of the inverse mapping in higher dimensions and optimal Sobolev regularity for composites. Moreover, we establish optimal moduli of continuity for mappings in our classes and we discuss orientation preservation and approximation of Sobolev homeomorphisms.

Using the Mainz $48\mathrm{cm}\ensuremath{\emptyset}\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}64\mathrm{cm}$ NaI(Tl) detector and the segmented G\"ottingen recoil detector SENECA in coincidence, Compton scattering by the proton at ${\ensuremath{\theta}}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}}^{\mathrm{lab}}=136\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}$ has been measured at MAMI (Mainz) in the energy range from 200 to 470 MeV. A massive lesion detection algorithm in mammography

A new algorithm for massive lesion detection in mammography is presented. The algorithm consists in three main steps : 1) reduction of the dimension of the image to be processed through the identifi cation of regions of interest (rois) as candidates for massive lesions ; 2) characterization of the roi by means of suitable feature extraction ; 3) pattern classifi cation through supervised neural networks. Passive-damping design for vibration control of large structures

In this work, a systematic strategy to design passive damping systems for structural vibration control is presented. The proposed design methodology is based on the equivalence between decentralized static velocity-feedback controllers and passive damping systems. By using recent developments in static output-feedback control, the design of passivedamping systems can be formulated as a single optimization problem with Linear Matrix Inequality constraints. A Quantum Lovasz Local Lemma

The Lovasz Local Lemma (LLL) is a powerful tool in probability theory to show the existence of combinatorial objects meeting a prescribed collection of "weakly dependent" criteria. We show that the LLL extends to a much more general geometric setting, where events are replaced with subspaces and probability is replaced with relative dimension, which allows to lower bound the dimension of the intersection of vector spaces under certain independence conditions.
