Nonlinear nonhomogeneous Neumann eigenvalue problems

2015

We consider a nonlinear parametric Neumann problem driven by a nonhomogeneous differential operator with a reaction which is $(p-1)$-superlinear near $\pm\infty$ and exhibits concave terms near zero. We show that for all small values of the parameter, the problem has at least five solutions, four of constant sign and the fifth nodal. We also show the existence of extremal constant sign solutions.

TANGENTIAL DEFORMATIONS ON FIBRED POISSON MANIFOLDS

2005

In a recent article, Cattaneo, Felder and Tomassini explained how the notion of formality can be used to construct flat Fedosov connections on formal vector bundles on a Poisson manifold $M$ and thus a star product on $M$ through the original Fedosov method for symplectic manifolds. In this paper, we suppose that $M$ is a fibre bundle manifold equipped with a Poisson tensor tangential to the fibers. We show that in this case the construction of Cattaneo-Felder- Tomassini gives tangential (to the fibers) star products.

Perturbations of the derivative along periodic orbits

2006

International audience; We show that a periodic orbit of large period of a diffeomorphism or flow, either admits a dominated splitting of a prescribed strength, or can be turned into a sink or a source by a C1-small perturbation along the orbit. As a consequence we show that the linear Poincaré flow of a C1-vector field admits a dominated splitting over any robustly transitive set.

Dimension estimates for the boundary of planar Sobolev extension domains

2020

We prove an asymptotically sharp dimension upper-bound for the boundary of bounded simply-connected planar Sobolev $W^{1,p}$-extension domains via the weak mean porosity of the boundary. The sharpness of our estimate is shown by examples.

On electric and magnetic problems for vector fields in anisotropic nonhomogeneous media

1983

r= 3~2, initiated by Saranen [ 131. In the above, n is the outward-drawn unit normal to the boundary and A denotes the exterior product. According to the simple models for static magnetic fields (resp. electric fields) which are governed by (0.1) (resp. (0.2)), we call (0.1) the magnetic type problem and (0.2) the electric type problem. Considering bounded smooth domains a c R3, we discussed in [ 131, by means of an appropriate Hilbert space method, the solvability and the representation of the solutions for both problems (0.1) and (0.2). Such a new approach was necessary to cover the general nonhomogeneous cases where v and E are matrix-valued functions. Here our aim is twofold. First, we …

ANALYSIS OF A SPHERICAL HARMONICS EXPANSION MODEL OF PLASMA PHYSICS

2004

A spherical harmonics expansion model arising in plasma and semiconductor physics is analyzed. The model describes the distribution of particles in the position-energy space subject to a (given) electric potential and consists of a parabolic degenerate equation. The existence and uniqueness of global-in-time solutions is shown by semigroup theory if the particles are moving in a one-dimensional interval with Dirichlet boundary conditions. The degeneracy allows to show that there is no transport of particles across the boundary corresponding to zero energy. Furthermore, under certain conditions on the potential, it is proved that the solution converges in the long-time limit exponentially f…

Internal fe approximation of spaces of divergence-free functions in three-dimensional domains

1986

SUMMARY The space of divergence-free vector functions with vanishing normal flux on the boundary is approximated by subspaces of finite elements having the same property. An easy way of generating basis functions in these subspaces is shown.

On the Computational Aspects of a Symmetric Multidomain Boundary Element Method Approach for Elastoplastic Analysis

2011

The symmetric boundary element method (SBEM) is applied to the elasto-plastic analysis of bodies subdivided into substructures. This methodology is based on the use of: a multidomain SBEM approach, for the evaluation of the elastic predictor; a return mapping algorithm based on the extremal paths theory, for the evaluation of inelastic quantities characterizing the plastic behaviour of each substructure; and a transformation of the domain inelastic integrals of each substructure into corresponding boundary integrals. The elastic analysis is performed by using the SBEM displacement approach, which has the advantage of creating system equations that only consist of nodal kinematical unknowns…

Computation of a few smallest eigenvalues of elliptic operators using fast elliptic solvers

2001

The computation of a few smallest eigenvalues of generalized algebraic eigenvalue problems is studied. The considered problems are obtained by discretizing self-adjoint second-order elliptic partial differential eigenvalue problems in two- or three-dimensional domains. The standard Lanczos algorithm with the complete orthogonalization is used to compute some eigenvalues of the inverted eigenvalue problem. Under suitable assumptions, the number of Lanczos iterations is shown to be independent of the problem size. The arising linear problems are solved using some standard fast elliptic solver. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the inverted problem is much easier to solve with the Lanczos…

A regularized Newton method for locating thin tubular conductivity inhomogeneities

2011

We consider the inverse problem of determining the position and shape of a thin tubular object, such as for instance a wire, a thin channel or a curve-like crack, embedded in some three-dimensional homogeneous body from a single measurement of electrostatic currents and potentials on the boundary of the body. Using an asymptotic model describing perturbations of electrostatic potentials caused by such thin objects, we reformulate the inverse problem as a nonlinear operator equation. We establish Frechet differentiability of the corresponding operator, compute its Frechet derivative and set up a regularized Newton scheme to solve the inverse problem numerically. We discuss our implementation…
