Flots de Smale en dimension 3: présentations finies de voisinages invariants d'ensembles selles
2002
Abstract Given a vector field X on a compact 3-manifold, and a hyperbolic saddle-like set K of that vector field, we consider all the filtering neighbourhood of K: by such, we mean any submanifold which boundary is tranverse to X, the maximal invariant of which is equal to K and which intersection with every orbit of X is connected. Up to topological equivalence, there is only a finite number of such neighbourhoods. We give a finite combinatorial presentation of the global dynamics on any such neighbourhood. A key step is the construction of a unique model of the germ of X along K; this model is, roughly speaking, the simplest three-dimensional manifold and the simplest Smale flow exhibitin…
Estimation of Vegetation Structure Parameters From SMAP Radar Intensity Observations
2021
In this article, we present a multipolarimetric estimation approach for two model-based vegetation structure parameters (shape A and orientation distribution ψ of the main canopy elements). The approach is based on a reduced observation set of three incoherent (no phase information) polarimetric backscatter intensities (|S HH | 2 , |S HV | 2 , and |S VV | 2 ) combined with a two-parameter (A P and ψ) discrete scatterer model of vegetation. The objective is to understand whether this confined set of observations contains enough information to estimate the two vegetation structure parameters from the L-band radar signals. In order to disentangle soil and vegetation scattering influences on th…
Tick-borne pathogens in Ixodes ricinus ticks collected from migratory birds in southern Norway
2020
Birds are important hosts for the first life stages of the Ixodes ricinus tick and they can transport their parasites over long distances. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato, Anaplasma phagocytophilum, Neoehrlichia mikurensis and Rickettsia helvetica in ticks collected from migratory birds in Norway. A total of 815 Ixodes ricinus ticks from 216 birds trapped at Lista Bird Observatory in southern Norway during spring and autumn migration in 2008 were analysed by real-time PCR. B. burgdorferi s. l. was the most prevalent pathogen, detected in 6.1% of the ticks. The prevalence of N. mikurensis, A. phagocytophilum and R. helvetica was 1.2%…
Baculovirus entry into human hepatoma cells.
2005
ABSTRACT Autographa californica multiple nucleopolyhedrovirus (AcMNPV), a prototype member of the Baculoviridae family, has gained increasing interest as a potential vector candidate for mammalian gene delivery applications. AcMNPV is known to enter both dividing and nondividing mammalian cell lines in vitro, but the mode and kinetics of entry as well as the intracellular transport of the virus in mammalian cells is poorly understood. The general objective of this study was to characterize the entry steps of AcMNPV- and green fluorescent protein-displaying recombinant baculoviruses in human hepatoma cells. The viruses were found to bind and transduce the cell line efficiently, and electron …
Generation of lentivirus vectors using recombinant baculoviruses
2008
In spite of advances in conventional four-plasmid transient transfection methods and development of inducible stable production cell lines, production of replication-defective lentiviral vectors in clinical scale has been challenging. Baculovirus technology offers an alternative to scalable virus production as a result of fast and easy production of baculoviruses, efficient transduction of mammalian cells and safety of the baculoviruses. As a first step toward scalable lentiviral production system, we have constructed four recombinant baculoviruses: the BAC-transfer virus expresses green fluorescent protein (GFP) as a transgene and BAC-gag-pol, BAC-vesicular stomatitis virus glycoprotein G …
Enhancing the multiplication of nucleopolyhedrovirus in vitro by manipulation of the pH
2009
Insect nucleopolyhedroviruses (NPVs) are studied widely as agents for biological control, as expression vectors for the production of heterologous proteins, and as transduction vectors for gene therapy applications. Most of these applications rely on the existence of cell lines that allow in vitro multiplication of the virus. The influence of pH in the medium culture on the multiplication of SeMNPV, HearSNPV and AcMNPV in different cell culture lines was investigated. The study showed a strong influence of the medium pH on the virus multiplication with the best results at pH 6.5, about half pH unit above the pH of insect culture media used most commonly. Additional experiments using a recom…
Bader’s topological analysis of the electron density in the pressure-induced phase transitions/amorphization in α-quartz from the catastrophe theory …
2013
In this work, the Bader's topological analysis of the electron density, coupled with Thom's catastrophe theory, was used to characterize the pressure-induced transformations in α-quartz. In particular, ab initio calculations of the α-quartz structures in the range 0-105 Gpa have been performed at the HF/DFT exchange-correlation terms level, using Hamiltonians based on a WC1LYP hybrid scheme. The electron densities calculated throughout the ab initio wave functions have been analysed by means of the Bader's theory, seeking for some catastrophic mechanism in the sense of Thom's theory. The analysis mainly showed that there is a typical fold catastrophe feature involving an O-O interaction at …
Molecular detection of Bartonella spp. in deer ked pupae, adult keds and moose blood in Finland
2014
SUMMARYThe deer ked (Lipoptena cervi) is a haematophagous ectoparasite of cervids that harbours haemotrophic Bartonella. A prerequisite for the vector competence of the deer ked is the vertical transmission of the pathogen from the mother to its progeny and transstadial transmission from pupa to winged adult. We screened 1154 pupae and 59 pools of winged adult deer keds from different areas in Finland for Bartonella DNA using PCR. Altogether 13 pupa samples and one winged adult deer ked were positive for the presence of Bartonella DNA. The amplified sequences were closely related to either B. schoenbuchensis or B. bovis. The same lineages were identified in eight blood samples collected fro…
Infinite momentum frame calculation of semileptonic heavyΛb→Λctransitions including HQET improvements
1997
We calculate the transition form factors that occur in heavy {Lambda}-type baryon semileptonic decays such as, e.g., in {Lambda}{sub b}{r_arrow}{Lambda}{sub c}{sup +}+l{sup {minus}}+{bar {nu}}{sub l}. We use Bauer-Stech-Wirbel-type infinite momentum frame wave functions for the heavy {Lambda}-type baryons which we assume to consist of a heavy quark and a light spin-isospin zero diquark system. The form factors at q{sup 2}=0 are calculated from the overlap integrals of the initial and final {Lambda}-type baryon states. To leading order in the heavy mass scale the structure of the form factors agrees with the HQET predictions including the normalization at zero recoil. The leading order {omeg…
Calibrating the Operational Beam Width and Maximum Range of a Ship Radar Used for Bird Observations
2010
In order to analyse quantitative radar observations of bird movements, one needs to know the dimensions of the air space surveyed by the radar. The present study shows how to calibrate the operational beam width and the maximum range of any radar for cross sections for different body sizes of songbirds. The trial used an X-band fan beam ship radar of 25 KW (Furuno Fr-2125) and a captive balloon. Metal spheres of different diameters, fastened to the bottom of the balloon at defined distances, corresponding to the radar cross sections of song birds, were moved in all three dimensions of the air space. Simultaneously to the location by radar, the position of the suspended sphere was measured b…
