A Novel Solution to Find the Dynamic Response of an Euler–Bernoulli Beam Fitted with Intraspan TMDs under Poisson Type Loading

2020

This contribution considers a virtual experiment on the vibrational response of rail and road bridges equipped with smart devices in the form of damping elements to mitigate vibrations. The internal damping of the bridge is considered a discontinuity that contain a dashpot. Exact complex eigenvalues and eigenfunctions are derived from a characteristic equation built as the determinant of a 4 x 4 matrix

Feedback linearization control of wind turbine equipped with doubly fed induction generator

2017

This paper focuses on several control techniques of a wind turbine of rated power of about 1 MW. In particular, a wind generator equipped with an asynchronous doubly-fed induction machine has been considered and its dynamic model in MATLAB/SIMULINK environment has been implemented. Starting from this model the feedback linearization control has been derived, and several simulations have been carried out, with the aim of compare its dynamic performances with the classical field oriented control, and with the V/f control. The results allow us to conclude that a DFIG controlled by a feedback linearization technique ensures better dynamic performance.

Approximate 3-Dimensional Electrical Impedance Imaging

2001

We discuss a new approach to three-dimensional electrical impedance imaging based on a reduction of the information to be demanded from a reconstruction algorithm. Images are obtained from a single measurement by suitably simplifying the geometry of the measuring chamber and by restricting the nature of the object to be imaged and the information required from the image. In particular we seek to establish the existence or non-existence of a single object (or a small number of objects) in a homogeneous background and the location of the former in the (x,y)-plane defined by the measuring electrodes. Given in addition the conductivity of the object rough estimates of its position along the z-a…

Learning Improved Feature Rankings through Decremental Input Pruning for Support Vector Based Drug Activity Prediction

2010

The use of certain machine learning and pattern recognition tools for automated pharmacological drug design has been recently introduced. Different families of learning algorithms and Support Vector Machines in particular have been applied to the task of associating observed chemical properties and pharmacological activities to certain kinds of representations of the candidate compounds. The purpose of this work, is to select an appropriate feature ordering from a large set of molecular descriptors usually used in the domain of Drug Activity Characterization. To this end, a new input pruning method is introduced and assessed with respect to commonly used feature ranking algorithms.

A Kalman Filter Approach for Distinguishing Channel and Collision Errors in IEEE 802.11 Networks

2008

In the last years, several strategies for maximizing the throughput performance of IEEE 802.11 networks have been proposed in literature. Specifically, it has been shown that optimizations are possible both at the medium access control (MAC) layer, and at the physical (PHY) layer. In fact, at the MAC layer, it is possible to minimize the channel waste due to collisions and backoff expiration times, by tuning the minimum contention window as a function of the network congestion level. At the PHY layer, it is possible to improve the transmission robustness, by selecting a suitable modulation/coding scheme as a function of the channel quality perceived by the stations. However, the feasibility…

Multimodal Images Classification using Dense SURF, Spectral Information and Support Vector Machine

2019

International audience; The multimodal image classification is a challenging area of image processing which can be used to examine the wall painting in the cultural heritage domain. In such classification, a common space of representation is important. In this paper, we present a new method for multimodal representation learning, by using a pixel-wise feature descriptor named dense Speed Up Robust Features (SURF) combined with the spectral information carried by the pixel. For classification of extracted features we have used support vector machine (SVM). Our database was extracted from acquisition on cultural heritage wall paintings that contain four modalities UV, Visible, IRR and fluores…

Synchronizing eye tracking and optical motion capture : How to bring them together

2018

Both eye tracking and motion capture technologies are nowadays frequently used in human sciences, although both technologies are usually used separately. However, measuring both eye and body movements simultaneously would offer great potential for investigating cross- modal interaction in human (e.g. music and language-related) behavior. Here we combined an Ergoneers Dikablis head mounted eye tracker with a Qualisys Oqus optical motion cap- ture system. In order to synchronize the recordings of both devices, we developed a gener- alizable solution that does not rely on any (cost-intensive) ready-made / company-provided synchronization solution. At the beginning of each recording, the partic…

The impact of sample reduction on PCA-based feature extraction for supervised learning

2006

"The curse of dimensionality" is pertinent to many learning algorithms, and it denotes the drastic raise of computational complexity and classification error in high dimensions. In this paper, different feature extraction (FE) techniques are analyzed as means of dimensionality reduction, and constructive induction with respect to the performance of Naive Bayes classifier. When a data set contains a large number of instances, some sampling approach is applied to address the computational complexity of FE and classification processes. The main goal of this paper is to show the impact of sample reduction on the process of FE for supervised learning. In our study we analyzed the conventional PC…

A Wavelet approach to extract main features from indirect immunofluorescence images

2019

A number of previous studies have shown that IIF image analysis requires complex and sometimes heterogeneous and diversified methods. Robust solutions can be proposed but they need to orchestrate several methods from low-level analysis up to more complex neural networks or SVM for data classification. The contribution intends to highlight the versatility of Wavelet Transform (WT) and their use in various levels of analysis for the classification of IIF images in order to develop a system capable of performing: image enhancement, ROI segmentation and object classification. Therefore, WT was adopted in the de-noise section, segmentation and classification. This analysis allows frequencies cha…

Artificial Intelligence in Protecting Smart Building’s Cloud Service Infrastructure from Cyberattacks

2020

Gathering and utilizing stored data is gaining popularity and has become a crucial component of smart building infrastructure. The data collected can be stored, for example, into private, public, or hybrid cloud service infrastructure or distributed service by utilizing data platforms. The stored data can be used when implementing services, such as building automation (BAS). Cloud services, IoT sensors, and data platforms can face several kinds of cybersecurity attack vectors such as adversarial, AI-based, DoS/DDoS, insider attacks. If a perpetrator can penetrate the defenses of a data platform, she can cause significant harm to the system. For example, the perpetrator can disrupt a buildin…
