Occlusion of the pig superior sagittal sinus, bridging and cortical veins: multistep evolution of sinus-vein thrombosis

1992

✓ Cerebral sinus-vein thrombosis may lead to severe hemodynamic changes, elevated intracranial pressure (ICP), and brain edema. It is supposed that progression of the thrombus from the sinus into bridging and cortical veins plays a key role in the development of these pathophysiological changes, but this hypothesis lacks experimental proof. The aim of this study, using a novel animal model of sinus-vein thrombosis, was to evaluate the effects of a standardized occlusion of the superior sagittal sinus and its bridging and cortical veins on hemodynamic alterations, on brain water content, and on ICP in domestic pigs. In 10 animals, the middle third of the superior sagittal sinus was occluded …

Local Cerebral Blood Flow in a Rat Cortical Vein Occlusion Model

1996

The symptoms following sinus and vein occlusion observed in patients and experimental animals display a considerable variability that so far remains largely unexplained. In a rat cortical vein occlusion model using a photochemical thrombotic technique, we examined changes in the cerebral venous flow pattern by fluorescence angiography and regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) and cerebral blood volume fraction (CBVF) by a modern laser Doppler “scanning” technique. Brain damage was assessed histologically. Fluorescence angiographic findings fell into two groups: group A, rats with an altered venous flow pattern after occlusion (n = 12), and group B, rats with interruption of blood flow and/or…

Novel complement C1 inhibitor BSF468248 does not improve brain damage after cortical vein occlusion

2003

BSF468248 is a novel potent complement C1 inhibitor. To determine whether BSF468248 is effective against focal cerebral ischemia, we evaluated the change of cerebral blood flow (CBF) and infarction volume using a photochemically-induced cortical vein occlusion model in rats in blind studies. In 22 Wistar rats, two adjacent cortical veins were occluded by photochemical thrombosis and fiberoptic illumination under controlled anesthesia and ventilation. Just after the occlusion, BSF468248 or physiological saline was administrated. In the low-dose study, a treatment group (n = 7) was administered BSF468248 1 mg/kg bolus and 1 mg/kg continuously for 30 min. The same volume of saline was given to…

Cluster analysis of mrna expression levels identifies multiple sequential patterns following focal cerebral ischemia

2012

AIM The purpose of this study is to detect gene expression patterns following focal cerebral ischemia. MATERIAL AND METHODS 25 male Wistar rats were divided into control (n = 8) and ischemic (n = 17) groups. In the ischemic group, slowly progressing focal ischemia was simulated by two-vein occlusion with spreading depression (SD) a cortical microinjection of KCl induced. Ischemic tissue was removed at 2, 8, 24, or 72 h postischemia. Using semiquantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction, we investigated mRNA expression levels of 13 representative genes related to cerebral ischemia. Cluster analysis of the gene expression levels was done. RESULTS In the ischemic group, the ex…

Neutrophil extracellular traps mediate bacterial liver damage

2015

Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) composed of DNA decorated with histones and proteases trap and kill bacteria but also injure host tissue. Here we show that during a bloodstream infection with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, the majority of bacteria are sequestered immediately by hepatic Kupffer cells, resulting in transient increases in liver enzymes, focal ischaemic areas and a robust neutrophil infiltration into the liver. The neutrophils release NETs into the liver vasculature, which remain anchored to the vascular wall via von Willebrand factor and reveal significant neutrophil elastase (NE) proteolytic activity. Importantly, DNase although very effective at DNA remov…

Preliminary evaluation of near-infrared vein visualization technology in the screening of palatal blood vessels.

2018

Background Avoidance from palatal blood vessel rupture is a major concern during the palatal soft tissue graft surgery. There is no defined chair-side and case-specific palatal blood vessel detection approach to facilitate the harvesting process. The objective of this pilot study is to assess the feasibility of a near-infrared vein visualization system in the screening process of palatal blood vessels. Material and Methods An extraoral vein visualization device (AccuVein AV400) was applied to a total of 304 hemi-maxilla of 152 individuals by two blind examiners. The study groups were classified according to their maximum inter-incisal measurements. The distances between the coronal border o…

Congenital renal arteriovenous malformation (aneurysmal type) in childhood.

1985

We report on a 9-year-old boy with a congenital renal arteriovenous fistula of the aneurysmal type, a form previously not observed in childhood. The clinical picture was unusual with severe arterial hypertension, excessive polyuria and decreased levels of serum sodium and chloride as main signs. Clinical and biochemical findings normalised after nephrectomy of the kidney involved.

Regulation of free choline in rat brain: dietary and pharmacological manipulations.

1998

The present study analyses, comparatively, the kinetics of free choline in the brain of rats during dietary and pharmacological manipulations. Low-choline diet halved the choline plasma level but did not cause significant changes of CSF choline. High-choline diet, hypoxia and treatment with nicotinamide increased brain choline availability through a central site of action and increased the CSF choline concentration. CSF choline concentrations were more effectively elevated by nicotinamide treatment (20-25 microM) than by acute choline administration (13-15 microM). Increases of CSF choline, due to brain choline mobilization, were consistently associated with a net release of choline from th…

Ca2+-activated K+ channels mediate relaxation of forearm veins in chronic renal failure

2003

In arteries, agonists such as acetylcholine release an endothelium-derived hyperpolarizing factor (EDHF) that is neither nitric oxide nor prostacyclin. To examine the responses to acetylcholine in segments of forearm veins from patients with chronic renal failure who either had never received dialysis or had undergone long-term dialysis, and to determine the contribution of nitric oxide and EDHF to endothelium-dependent relaxation in veins from patients with chronic renal failure.Isometric tension was recorded in rings of forearm vein from 34 non-dialysed patients, 27 dialysed patients and 14 multiorgan donors (controls).Relaxation in response to acetylcholine was reduced in veins of non-dia…
