Associative and implicit memory performance as a function of cognitive reserve in elderly adults with and without mild cognitive impairment
2016
AbstractThis study aims to analyze implicit and explicit memory performance as a function of cognitive reserve (CR) in a healthy control group (N = 39) and a mild cognitive impairment (MCI) group (N = 37). Both groups were subdivided into high and low cognitive reserve, and were asked to complete an explicit and implicit associative recognition tasks. The results showed that the control group was able to learn both tasks (η2 = .19, p < .0001), and the high CR group fared better (η2 = .06, p < .05). The MCI sample, conversely, was unable to learn the implicit relationship, and showed very little learning on the explicit association task. Participants diagnosed with MCI showed little pl…
An overall decline both in recollection and familiarity in healthy aging
2015
Background: In the area of recognition memory, the experimental data have been inconsistent about whether or not familiarity declines in healthy aging. A recent meta-analysis concluded that familiarity is impaired when estimated with the remember-know procedure, but not with the process- dissociation procedure. Method: We present an associative recognition experiment with remember-know judgments that allow us to estimate both recollection and familiarity using both procedures in the same task and with the same participants (a sample of healthy older people and another sample of young people). Moreover, we performed a within-subjects manipulation of the type of materials (pairs of words or p…
Are cognitive interventions effective in alzheimer´s disease? a controlled meta-analysis of the effects of bias
2016
Objective: There is limited evidence about the efficacy of cognitive interventions for Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, aside from the methodological quality of the studies analyzed, the methodology used in previous meta-analyses is itself a risk of bias as different types of effect sizes (ESs) were calculated and combined. This study aimed at examining the results of nonpharmacological interventions for AD with an adequate control of statistical methods and to demonstrate a different approach to meta-analysis. Method: ESs were calculated with the independent groups pre/post design. Average ESs for separate outcomes were calculated and moderator analyses were performed so as to offer an o…
Psychological changes through the lifespan: Ageing and psychosocial-related variables
2022
This series of papers examines aspects of aging cognition in both healthy older adults and those diagnosed with dementias, and although few in number, gives an important overview of some of the key issues in examining the relationships between aging and psychosocial variables, including social cognition. The special issue includes five papers which cover: goal related decision making (Ito et al.); trust in cooperative behavior (Telga and Lupianez); impact of anxiety on self-perceived cognitive difficulties (Spalding et al.); factors associated with depression in Wuhan, China (Liu et al.); and neurophysiological functional connectivity related to apathy in people living with dementia (Altunk…
