Search for doubleβdecay of106Cd by using isotopically enriched106CdWO4crystal scintillator

2012

A search for double ? processes in 106Cd was carried out at the Gran Sasso National Laboratories of the INFN, Italy; by using a CdWC4 crystal scintillator (mass of 215 g) enriched in 106Cd up to 66%. After 6590 h of data taking, half-life limits on double beta processes in 106Cd were set at level of 1019 ? 1021 yr. A possible resonant enhancement of the 0?2? processes has also been estimated in the framework of the QRPA approach.

Testing the outflow theory of Malcherek by slit weir data

2018

Abstract In this paper the flow-process of a slit weir is analyzed by the outflow theory of Malcherek. Average flow velocity over the slit weir is expressed in terms of head over weir and the momentum correction coefficient. The theoretically deduced stage-discharge formula was then calibrated using experimental data obtained for a ratio between the weir and the channel width ranging from 0.05 to 0.25. The deduced stage–discharge relationship allows to measure discharge values characterized by errors which are, for 91% of the measured values, less than or equal to ± 5%.

Competition Between Beta and Double Beta Decay in 48Ca and 96Zr

2000

Highly forbidden beta decays of 48Ca and 96Zr are studied and their relative importance as compared to the double beta decay of these nuclei is evaluated. 48Ca and 96Zr are the only naturally occurring nuclei in which these processes can occur simultaneously. Although usually ordinary beta decay overwhelms double beta decay unless the former is energetically forbidden, in these cases the high degree of forbiddenness and small release of kinetic energy makes the half-lives of these modes comparable to each other.

Parametric Excitation of Density Waves in Drifting Electron-Hole Plasmas

1972

The effect of the electronic drift velocity on the conditions for parametric excitation in electron-hole plasmas is investigated in the two-mode approximation using a Vlasov-equations approach. The results show that when the electronic drift velocity approaches the phase velocity of the lower frequency mode of the plasma, a considerable lowering of the threshold for the onset of parametric excitation occurs, thus resulting in more favorable conditions for experimental observation of the process. The dependence of the threshold on other relevant physical parameters involved, such as the electron-to-hole mass and temperature ratios, is also investigated.

Nonlinear nonviscous hydrodynamical models for charge transport in the framework of extended thermodynamic methods

2002

This paper develops a procedure, based on methods of extended thermodynamics, to design nonlinear hydrodynamical models for charge transport in metals or in semiconductors, neglecting viscous phenomena. Models obtained in this way allow the study of the motion of electric charges in the presence of arbitrary external electric fields and may be useful when one wishes to study phenomena in a neighborhood of a stationary nonequilibrium process: indeed, the drift velocity of the charge gas with respect to the crystal lattice is not regarded as a small parameter.

Multi-band high resolution spectroscopy rules out the hot Jupiter BD+20 1790b - First data from the GIARPS Commissioning

2018

Context. Stellar activity is currently challenging the detection of young planets via the radial velocity (RV) technique. Aims. We attempt to definitively discriminate the nature of the RV variations for the young active K5 star BD+20 1790, for which visible (VIS) RV measurements show divergent results on the existence of a substellar companion. Methods. We compare VIS data with high precision RVs in the near infrared (NIR) range by using the GIANO - B and IGRINS spectrographs. In addition, we present for the first time simultaneous VIS-NIR observations obtained with GIARPS (GIANO - B and HARPS - N) at Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG). Orbital RVs are achromatic, so the RV amplitude does …

The HADES RV Programme with HARPS-N@TNG VIII. Gl15A: A multiple wide planetary system sculpted by binary interaction

2018

We present 20 years of radial velocity (RV) measurements of the M1 dwarf Gl15A, combining 5 years of intensive RV monitoring with the HARPS-N spectrograph with 15 years of archival HIRES/Keck RV data. We carry out an MCMC-based analysis of the RV time series, inclusive of Gaussian Process (GP) approach to the description of stellar activity induced RV variations. Our analysis confirms the Keplerian nature and refines the orbital solution for the 11.44-day period super Earth, Gl15A\,b, reducing its amplitude to $1.68^{+0.17}_{-0.18}$ m s$^{-1}$ ($M \sin i = 3.03^{+0.46}_{-0.44}$ M$_\oplus$), and successfully models a long-term trend in the combined RV dataset in terms of a Keplerian orbit wi…

Probing the Equation of State of Ultradense Matter with a Submillisecond Pulsar Search Experiment

1997

Current ideas about the equation of state for the ultradense matter constituting neutron stars provide models with a range of neutron star radii for a given mass. This implies different estimates for the maximum angular velocity that such an object could attain. The fastest and the slowest angular velocity differ by a significant amount, depending on the equation of state adopted. In particular, the identification of a submillisecond pulsar would allow us to constrain the equation of state of dense matter. In this paper, we discuss a possible evolutionary scenario resulting in a submillisecond pulsar, taking into account current ideas about the evolution of the magnetic field of neutron sta…

On the Measurements of Numerical Viscosity and Resistivity in Eulerian MHD Codes

2016

We propose a simple ansatz for estimating the value of the numerical resistivity and the numerical viscosity of any Eulerian MHD code. We test this ansatz with the help of simulations of the propagation of (magneto)sonic waves, Alfven waves, and the tearing mode instability using the MHD code Aenus. By comparing the simu- lation results with analytical solutions of the resistive-viscous MHD equations and an empirical ansatz for the growth rate of tearing modes we measure the numerical viscosity and resistivity of Aenus. The comparison shows that the fast-magnetosonic speed and wavelength are the characteristic velocity and length, respectively, of the aforementioned (relatively simple) syst…
