Hypokalemia shortens relative refractory period of peripheral sensory nerves in man

Absolute and relative refractory periods and the sensory conduction velocity of the median and ulnar nerves were determined in six patients suffering from hypokalemia of various origins. Nerve impulse conduction and the absolute refractory period remained normal, but the relative refractory period was shortened to 1.7 to 2.6 ms at serum K+ levels from 1.6 to 2.9 mval/l. As compared with normal values this decrease was statistically significant.

Background:Treatment with Janus Kinase inhibitors (JAK-i) (Tofacitinib, Baricitinib) can cause an increase of serum lipids such as total cholesterol, low- (LDL) and high- (HDL) density lipoproteins in patients with arthritis (1). On the other hand, JAK-i can reduce systemic inflammation and have therefore a beneficial effect on the cardiovascular system of treated patients. In a prospective study blood flow velocity measurements were performed in 110 "healthy" newborn with duplex Doppler sonography in the superior mesenteric artery to obtain standard values. In 49 of these neonates 15, 30, and 45 minutes following feeding examinations were performed. Peak systolic flow velocity, end systolic flow velocity, time average flow velocity and time average maximum flow velocity were determined, the resistance and Pourcelot index as well as the volume blood flow were calculated. The postural sway of subjects during standing both with their eyes open and closed together with maximum velocity of walking were analysed in six male chronic hemiplegic patients before, during and after an intensive movement training programme lasting 8 weeks. The movement training programme was carried out on the basis of Bobath's principles. Three of the subjects carried out their training on a trampoline, with the particular purpose of enhancing the stimulation of the mechanisms responsible for the control of balance. Upper limb postural tremor consists of distinct oscillations, mainly mechanical-reflex and central-neurogenic. These oscillations are superimposed upon a background of irregular fluctuations in muscle force. Muscle spindles play key-roles in the information flow to supra-spinal and spinal generators. Oscillations were delivered using a new generation portable myohaptic device, called 'wristalyzer', which takes into account the ergonomy of upper limbs allowing a fine adjustment to each configuration of upper limb segments. Duplex sonography is a non-invasive procedure which permits the determination of flow velocity and direction in visceral vessels. Results in 50 normals have shown that small arteries can be evaluated in about 50% of cases. The portal venous system can be demonstrated in all cases; average flow velocity and volume is 15.2 +/- 2.8 cm/s and 694 +/- 230 ml/min, corresponding with the values obtained by invasive methods. Clinical application for duplex examinations can be found in portal hypertension, varices, thromboses, aneurysms and transplant kidneys.

Thyroid hormone deficiency at early postnatal ages affects the cytoarchitecture and function of neocortical and telencephalic limbic areas, leading to impaired associative memory and in a wide spectrum of neurological and mental diseases.
