Full field automated evaluation of the quarter wave plate retardation by phase stepping technique
2002
Quarter wave plates are optical elements commonly used in photoelasticity to obtain circularly polarized light. They divide the incident light field into two linearly polarized orthogonal components with a phase difference of a quarter of the light wavelength. Due to the tolerance in manufacturing, however, the actual phase shifting produced by the plates is affected by an error, which noticeably influences the photoelastic measurements performed by means of various automated methods. This paper presents a technique, based on the phase stepping method, for the full field automatic evaluation of the quarter wave plate error.
Phase shifting photoelasticity in white light
2007
The availability of image acquisition systems has led to the development of digital photoelasticity both in monochromatic and white light. In particular white light has been used mainly with the following methods: Spectral Content Analysis, RGB photoelasticity and phase shifting photoelasticity. Phase shifting photoelasticity in the colour domain has been used effectively for the determination of the isoclinic parameter in order to reduce the influence of the isochromatic fringes. The method has been also proposed for the determination of the isochromatic fringe order. This paper concerns the general characteristics of phase shifting photoelasticity in the colour domain. Special attention i…
Photoelastic stress pattern analysis using Fourier transform with carrier fringes: influence of quarter-wave plate error
2002
The Fourier transform method, widely applied in photomechanics for the automated analysis of interferometric fringe patterns, has been recently extended to the photoelastic isochromatic fringe patterns analysis. Unfortunately, its use in photoelasticity involves some limitations that have not been completely highlighted in literature. This work deals with the influence of the quarter-wave plate tolerance on the evaluation of the retardation. Both theoretical and experimental analyses have shown that the quarter-wave plate error does not affect the retardation only if the principal stress directions in the model and in the carrier are aligned. In general, instead, the tolerance of the quarte…
Thee+e−→2(π+π−)π0,2(π+π−)η,K+K−π+π−π0andK+K−π+π−ηcross sections measured with initial-state radiation
2007
We study the processes $e^+ e^-\to 2(\pi^+\pi^-)\pi^0\gamma$, $2(\pi^+\pi^-)\eta\gamma$, $K^+ K^-\pi^+\pi^-\pi^0\gamma$ and $K^+ K^-\pi^+\pi^-\eta\gamma$ with the hard photon radiated from the initial state. About 20000, 4300, 5500 and 375 fully reconstructed events, respectively, are selected from 232 fb$^{-1}$ of BaBar data. The invariant mass of the hadronic final state defines the effective $e^+ e^-$ center-of-mass energy, so that the obtained cross sections from the threshold to about 5 GeV can be compared with corresponding direct \epem measurements, currently available only for the $\eta\pi^+\pi^-$ and $\omega\pi^+\pi^-$ submodes of the $e^+ e^-\to 2(\pi^+\pi^-)\pi^0$ channel. Studyi…

We study the processes e^+e^- → 3(π^+π^-)γ, 2(π^+π^-π^0)γ and K^+K^-2(π^+π^-)γ, with the photon radiated from the initial state. About 20 000, 33 000 and 4000 fully reconstructed events, respectively, have been selected from 232 fb^(-1) of BABAR data. The invariant mass of the hadronic final state defines the effective e^+e^- center-of-mass energy, so that these data can be compared with the corresponding direct e^+e^- measurements. From the 3(π^+π^-), 2(π^+π^-π^0) and K^+K^-2(π^+π^-) mass spectra, the cross sections for the processes e^+e^- → 3(π^+π^-), e^+e^- → 2(π^+π^-π^0) and e^+e^- → K^+K^-2(π^+π^-) are measured for center-of-mass energies from production threshold to 4.5 GeV. The unc…
Measurements ofe+e−→K+K−η,K+K−π0, andKs0K±π∓cross sections using initial state radiation events
2008
This paper reports measurements of processes: e+e-→γKS0K±π∓, e+e-→γK+K-π0, e+e-→γϕη, and e+e-→γϕπ0. The initial-state radiated photon allows to cover the hadronic final state in the energy range from thresholds up to ≈4.6 GeV. The overall size of the data sample analyzed is 232 fb-1, collected by the BABAR detector running at the PEP-II e+e- storage ring. From the Dalitz plot analysis of the KS0K±π∓ final state, moduli, and relative phase of the isoscalar and the isovector components of the e+e-→KK*(892) cross section are determined. Parameters of ϕ and ρ recurrences are also measured, using a global fitting procedure which exploits the interconnection among amplitudes, moduli, and phases…
The influence of the quarter wave plates in automated photoelasticity
2002
During the last decades, several methods have been proposed to automate photoelastic analyses. Some procedures are based on the circularly polarised light by using quarter wave plates. However, quarter wave plates are typically matched for a specific wavelength, and an error is introduced at different wavelengths. The error of quarter wave plates affects the measurement of isochromatic and isoclinic data. In this paper, the influence of the errors of quarter wave plates in some of the most common automated photoelastic methods is reviewed. The errors in the photoelastic data are given and the procedures to reduce, or eliminate, them are also suggested.
Projections and isolated points of parts of the spectrum
2018
In this paper, we relate the existence of certain projections, commuting with a bounded linear operator $T\in L(X)$ acting on Banach space $X$, with the generalized Kato decomposition of $T$. We also relate the existence of these projections with some properties of the quasi-nilpotent part $H_0(T)$ and the analytic core $K(T)$. Further results are given for the isolated points of some parts of the spectrum.
Graphical representation of non-absorbing polarization devices
2000
A graphical representation of general non-absorbing polarization devices operating under normal plane-wave incidence is presented. The representation is based on a four-dimensional spherical parametrization of the Jones matrix of this kind of polarization devices. The graphical representation takes the form of a solid cylinder. The projection of the point representing the device over the base of the cylinder gives the corresponding polarization eigenvectors represented in the complex plane, while the height of the point in the cylinder is the phase of its eigenvalue. Some simple examples like wave-plates and rotators are discussed. The representation may represent a useful tool to identify …
