Development of Network Security Education
2021
Distance education has grown tremendously over the last decade. Internet technologies have enabled a large-scale dispensation of lectures, exercises, and training. Virtual Learning Management Systems (LMSs) offer a number of tools to realize distance education and distance learning. In this work, we present a virtual system architecture for training cyber security professionals with hands-on skills. The architecture is based on a VirtualBox virtualization environment. Guest machines are installed on an instance of VirtualBox. The installed environment offers a safe and isolated workbench for experiments. After installation and configuration of the environment, students perform a number of i…
Smart Terminal System of Systems’ Cyber Threat Impact Evaluation
2023
Systems of system-level thinking is required when the purpose is to develop a coherent understanding of the ecosystem where every user and system requirements are divided into specific parts. The smarter project, as a part of the Sea4value program of DIMECC, aims to develop harbor operations, including passenger and cargo transportation, in a way that port processes will improve, emissions will decrease, and overall security will enhance in smart ports. This paper describes cyber-attack impacts against the Smart terminal system of systems in the cyber realm by utilizing the MITRE ATTACK® framework to map the objectives of threat actors. The Smart Terminal system environment includes ICT, IC…
Kybertoiminnallisuuden havainnointi Suomen Erillisverkot Oy:ssä
2018
Valokuituverkko siirtyi Puolustusvoimilta Suomen Erillisverkot Oy konsernin hallintaan ja omistukseen liikkeenluovutuksen yhteydessä 1.3.2015. Tämä Pro Gradu tutkielma syntyi liikkeenluovutuksen tuoman turvallisuusnäkökulma-ajattelun vuoksi. Tutkielmassa käsitellään kyberturvallisuuden käsitteiden ja toimijoiden lisäksi Suomen Erillisverkot Oy konsernin työntekijöiden kyberturvallisuuden tietämystasoa Suomen Erillisverkot Oy konsernissa sekä CSIRT-toiminnallisuutta yleisesti. Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin yhtiön henkilöstön toimia ja termien tuntemusta kyberturvallisuuteen liittyen verkkokyselyn avulla. Kyselyn tuloksista voidaan havaita ajankohtaisten haittaohjelmien toimintamallien koulutuks…
Käyttäjän manipulointi organisaation tietoturvauhkana
2016
Tämän tutkielman aiheena on käyttäjän manipulointi organisaation tietoturvauhkana.
On Apache Log4j2 Exploitation in Aeronautical, Maritime, and Aerospace Communication
2022
Apache Log4j2 is a prevalent logging library for Java-based applications. In December 2021, several critical and high-impact software vulnerabilities, including CVE-2021-44228, were publicly disclosed, enabling remote code execution (RCE) and denial of service (DoS) attacks. To date, these vulnerabilities are considered critical and the consequences of their disclosure far-reaching. The vulnerabilities potentially affect a wide range of internet of things (IoT) devices, embedded devices, critical infrastructure (CI), and cyber-physical systems (CPSs). In this paper, we study the effects and feasibility of exploiting these vulnerabilities in mission-critical aviation and maritime environment…
IoT -based adversarial attack's effect on cloud data platform services in a smart building context
2020
IoT sensors and sensor networks are widely employed in businesses. The common problem is a remarkable number of IoT device transactions are unencrypted. Lack of correctly implemented and robust defense leaves the organization's IoT devices vulnerable to numerous cyber threats, such as adversarial and man-in-the-middle attacks or malware infections. A perpetrator can utilize adversarial examples when attacking machine learning (ML) models, such as convolutional neural networks (CNN) or deep neural networks (DNN) used, e.g., in DaaS cloud data platform service of smart buildings. DaaS cloud data platform's function in this study is to connect data from multiple IoT sensors, databases, private…
UInDeSI4.0 : An efficient Unsupervised Intrusion Detection System for network traffic flow in Industry 4.0 ecosystem
2023
In an Industry 4.0 ecosystem, all the essential components are digitally interconnected, and automation is integrated for higher productivity. However, it invites the risk of increasing cyber-attacks amid the current cyber explosion. The identification and monitoring of these malicious cyber-attacks and intrusions need efficient threat intelligence techniques or intrusion detection systems (IDSs). Reducing the false positive rate in detecting cyber threats is an important step for a safer and reliable environment in any industrial ecosystem. Available approaches for intrusion detection often suffer from high computational costs due to large number of feature instances. Therefore, this paper…

AI-based quantum-safe cybersecurity automation and orchestration for edge intelligence in future networks
2023
The AIQUSEC (AI-based quantum secure cyber security automation and orchestration in the edge intelligence of future networks) brings measurable advances to the cyber security of access and edge networks and their services, as well as Operational Service Technologies (OT). The research aims for significant cybersecurity scalability, efficiency, and effectiveness of operations through improved and enhanced device and sensor securities, security assurance, quantum security, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) based automation solutions. The new application scenarios of near future, the multiple stakeholders within each scenario, and the higher data volumes raise the need for novel cybersecurity s…
Cybersecurity Attacks on Software Logic and Error Handling Within AIS Implementations: A Systematic Testing of Resilience
2022
To increase situational awareness of maritime vessels and other entities and to enable their exchange of various information, the International Maritime Organization mandated the use of the Automatic Identification System (AIS) in 2004. The AIS is a self-reporting system that uses the VHF radio link. However, any radio-based self-reporting system is prone to forgery, especially in situations where authentication of the message is not designed into the architecture. As AIS was designed in the 1990s when cyberattacks were in their infancy, it does not implement authentication or encryption; thus, it can be seen as fundamentally vulnerable against modern-day cyberattacks. This paper demonstrat…
