Exploring Gameful Motivation of Autonomous Learners
2022
In this explorative study, we investigated motives of autonomous learners to participate in an online course, and how these motives are related to gameplay motivations, engagement in the course experience, and learning outcomes. The guiding premise for the study has been the idea that learning and game playing carry phenomenal similarities that could be revealed by scrutinizing motives for participating in a massive open online course that does not involve any intentionally game-like features. The research was conducted by analyzing survey data (N = 705) collected from individuals who had voluntarily participated in an open online course about artificial intelligence and its societal impact…

Infographics as a Reflective Assignment Method in Requirements Engineering e-Course?
2019
Our Work in Progress Paper in Innovative Practice Category focuses on how learners’ experience use of infographics in advanced level e-course on requirements engineering (RE). Infographics are visual representations of information in such a way that information can be easily understood at a glance. Most of the previous infographics studies have been conducted in the context of inquiry learning. To complement this research, we studied how learners experience use of infographics as a method for reflective assignment and hence if the usage of infographics supported conceptualization about RE. We adopted a qualitative content analysis approach, applying thematic network analysis to the data rec…
Enhancing Digital Skills of Early Childhood Teachers Through Online Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math Training Programs in Estonia
2022
Teacher professional development programs, including mid- and long-term Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Math (STEAM) courses, have recently moved from in person learning at university premises to an online environment. Whether it is a temporary change in learning methods caused by the COVID-19 restrictions or whether it will become a new normal is currently under discussion in many teacher training institutions around the world. The aim of this study was to design and implement time- and money-saving synchronous online teacher training format for conducting co-design courses for early childhood teachers in the theme of STEAM integrated learning activities. Based on Tallinn University…
OpenQuest: Designing a Motivational Framework for MOOCs Instruction
2016
This paper introduces an innovative motivational framework for Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) instructional design coined as Open Quest Framework (OpenQuest). OpenQuest aims to improve learning and user engagement in MOOCs by drawing lessons from the success of quest-based initiatives, gamified web platforms, and massive-multiplayer online games (MMOs). The framework is grounded on established motivational theories such as the Self-Determination Theory and Situated Motivational Affordance. It supplements existing MOOCs design schemes that usually focus on pedagogy, assessment and technology. It features specific motivational mechanisms including, quests and narration, reputation system…
Inspiraatio ja luovuus nuorten verkkokirjoittajaryhmässä
2017
Tutkimukseni tuottaa uutta tietoa mobiililaitteiden käyttäjien subjektiviteet…

Interaction in online learning environments : how to support collaborative activities in higher education settings
2006
Collaboration promoted and supported by instructional technology has the potential to lead learners to deeper understanding and knowledge building. There have been optimistic views that any web based interaction can be educationally valuable. However, online learning environments do not, as such, guarantee that learners will achieve genuine collaboration. It seems that there are several difficulties facing those who wish to employ online learning environments as a medium for productive learner interaction. The particular aim of this exploration of interaction and learning in computer supported collaborative learning environments was to study the interplay between learners and consider the w…
Evaluation of Student Teachers’ Perceived Quantitative Workload and Usefulness of an On-line Elementary Science Education Course Unit
2022
We have designed a 1 ECTS on-line science pedagogy unit as a part of a 6 ECTS science education course for elementary school student teachers. To improve the unit, we asked 169 participants to estimate their use of time and the usefulness of the themes and contents in it. We analysed the responses in the framework of students’ perceived workload. The Basics of School Science was perceived as the most useful section, followed by Science Teaching and Learning Methods and Basics of Science and Scientific Knowledge in Schools, respectively. This in mind, we discuss the rescaling of the workload and the respective weights student perception and teacher expertise should have in the process. peerR…
