Editorial : Networks Applied in Science Education Research
2020
Science education research is, in many ways, involved with exploring relational aspects of diverse elements that affect students’ learning outcomes; at one end, the elements may be concepts to be learned, and at the other end, the relations between students in different types of learning settings and environments and, ultimately, how such elements may interact [...]
The Spanning Tree based Approach for Solving the Shortest Path Problem in Social Graphs
2016
Nowadays there are many social media sites with a very large number of users. Users of social media sites and relationships between them can be modelled as a graph. Such graphs can be analysed using methods from social network analysis (SNA). Many measures used in SNA rely on computation of shortest paths between nodes of a graph. There are many shortest path algorithms, but the majority of them suits only for small graphs, or work only with road network graphs that are fundamentally different from social graphs. This paper describes an efficient shortest path searching algorithm suitable for large social graphs. The described algorithm extends the Atlas algorithm. The proposed algorithm so…
GIS-data related route optimization, hierarchical clustering, location optimization, and kernel density methods are useful for promoting distributed …
2019
Currently, geographic information system (GIS) models are popular for studying location-allocation-related questions concerning bioenergy plants. The aim of this study was to develop a model to investigate optimal locations for two different types of bioenergy plants, for farm and centralized biogas plants, and for wood terminals in rural areas based on minimizing transportation distances. The optimal locations of biogas plants were determined using location optimization tools in R software, and the optimal locations of wood terminals were determined using kernel density tools in ArcGIS. The present case study showed that the utilized GIS tools are useful for bioenergy-related decision-maki…
Engagement as a Driver of Growth of Online Health Forums: Observational Study
2017
Background: The emerging research on nurturing the growth of online communities posits that it is in part attributed to network effects, wherein every increase in the volume of user-generated content increases the value of the community in the eyes of its potential new members. The recently introduced metric engagement capacity offers a means of quantitatively assessing the ability of online platform users to engage each other into generating content; meanwhile, the quantity engagement value is useful for quantifying communication-based platform use. If the claim that higher engagement leads to accelerated growth holds true for online health forums (OHFs), then engagement tracking should be…
Toimitusten pomot Twitterissä : verkostoanalyyttinen katsaus journalististen päättäjien Twitter-yhteisöön
2014
Twitter on oletuksena avoin informaatioverkosto ja sosiaalinen media. Mediatoimijat on yksi Twitterin aktiivisimmista käyttäjäryhmistä. Näin Twitteriä tarkastelemalla on mahdollista tutkia journalististen päättäjien keskinäissuhteita. Selvitän tutkielmassani uutta kartoittavalla otteella, millainen on suomalaisten journalististen päättäjien Twitter-verkosto, keitä siihen kuuluu, ketkä ovat keskeisimpiä henkilöitä siinä ja miten päättäjien keskinäisverkosto suhtautuu muuhun Twitteriin. Tavoitteena on muodostaa deskriptiivinen kuvaus journalististen päättäjien Twitterverkostosta ja herätellä mahdollisia jatkotutkimuksen aiheita. Tutkielman teoreettinen osa käsittelee verkostoanalyysin menetel…
Päällekkäisjäsenyydet liikunnan ja urheilun organisaatioverkostoissa
2016
Interlocking directorates in sports organization network Focus in this article is on interlocking directorates in sports organization network. The aim is to study the networks ́ structure and how it has changed during the time period 1993–2014. The data consists of central organizations boards and states sport policy working groups (n=121). The data have been analysed in Ucinet-network program. Results indicates that power-elite have come narrow year by year, but there ́s seven organization which have been in central position in every decade. The conclusion is, that in the sports organization network, there have been at the same both momentariness and perfusion, but the power-elite have bee…
"Toimikaa, älkää odottako" : Vihtori Kosolan puheiden muutokset 1929-1936
2015
The dissertation is concerned with the speeches of Vihtori Kosola (1884–1936), recruiter of jäger, strike breaker and activist. Kosola assumed the leadership of the Lapua Movement in 1929. His most significant speeches were delivered on the peasants’ march of 7 July 1930 and on the 15th anniversary of the war of independence on 16 May 1933. Kosola was a political speaker and the figurehead of the Patriotic people’s movement (IKL) founded in 1932. The Study focuses on Kosola’s speeches applying rhetorical-semantic concept analysis with regard to the changes occurring in the main concepts. Changes in the speeches are used to explore the concepts of democracy and application of the law in Finl…
Friends, academic achievement, and school engagement during adolescence : A social network approach to peer influence and selection effects
2018
Abstract Peers become increasingly important socializing agents for academic behaviors and attitudes during adolescence. This study investigated peer influence and selection effects on adolescents' emotional (i.e., flow in schoolwork, school burnout, school value), cognitive (i.e., school effort), and behavioral (i.e., truancy) engagement in school. A social network approach was used to examine students of post-comprehensive education in Finland (N = 1419; mean age = 16). Students were asked to nominate peers to generate peer networks and to describe their own school engagement at two time points (one year apart). Network analyses revealed that the degree to which peer influence and selecti…
Oikeuttamisverkostot : miten analysoida julkisissa keskusteluissa esitettyjen oikeutusten keskinäisiä suhteita
2021
Luc Boltanskin ja Laurent Thévenot'n vuonna 1991 kehittämä teoria toiminnan moraalisesta oikeuttamisesta on yksi keskeisistä Pierre Bourdieun jälkeisen "pragmatistisen" sosiologian saavutuksista.
