Startup and effects of relative water renewal rate on water quality and growth of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) in a unique RAS research platfo…
2018
Abstract The aquaculture industry is growing fast but facing two major challenges: a shortage of suitable locations for growth and the need to reduce environmental impacts. One solution for both these challenges is inland production through recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). The RAS technique is rather new, and several practical issues need to be solved. In this study, an experimental platform, consisting of ten individual RAS units, was built for small-scale testing of different RAS designs and operation methods, and two preliminary experiments were conducted. In the first experiment, the capability of different chemical additions (sodium nitrite, ammonium chloride and/or cane sugar)…
Some tests of 3D ultrasonic traveltime tomography on the Eleonora d'Aragona statue (F. Laurana, 1468)
2013
Abstract The use of a non-destructive technique in situ can be a valuable diagnostic tool to support verification of restoration, as well as a monitoring technique in works of art or historical monuments. We present a high resolution 3D ultrasonic tomography to one of the most important statues of the Regional Gallery of Palazzo Abatellis of Palermo, the bust of Eleonora d'Aragona by F. Laurana (1430–1502). This technique allowed to study the structural continuity of the material of the marble. Some tests have been carried out to optimize inversion parameters, such as voxel size and to choose between straight and curved rays. We propose to calculate a minimum lateral resolution using the sa…
Actitudes hacia la estadística en estudiantes de Ciencias de la Educación : propiedades psicométricas de la versión española del Survey of Attitudes …
2019
The study of attitudes towards statistics is a topic which has aroused the interest of researchers in different countries and at teaching levels. In this work we present an analysis of the psychometric properties, in terms of structural validity and internal consistency, of a Spanish version of the Survey of Attitudes Towards Statistics (SATS-36) administered to education students. The results obtained from the 409 participants indicate a lack of fit for the six-factor model proposed by the authors of the SATS, especially compared with the five-factor model with corrected mistakes that the authors of this work propose. These results coincide with what has been defended by other investigatio…
Subversion of land-use plans and the housing bubble in Spain
2011
The exceptional rhythm of the construction of residential dwellings in Spain between 1997 and 2006 and its geographical contrasts are explained by a time of economic expansion, a political and social context favourable to unlimited growth and excessive and untempered municipal land-use plans with passive or complicit regional governments. The lack of effective land-use regional plans and the discrediting of municipal land-use plans are a manifestation of a deliberate subversion of public planning to subordinate the public interest to the developer's demands. This article concludes by presenting a panorama of the disturbing consequences of this urban development model.
Techniques for uretero-intestinal reimplantation.
2004
Purpose of review Uretero-intestinal reimplantation is a crucial component of urinary diversion. Several techniques for refluxing and nonrefluxing uretero-intestinal reimplantation have been established and modified to minimize anastomotic complications and preserve renal function. We review current experience with uretero-intestinal reimplantation in different types of urinary diversion. Recent findings The basic principles of uretero-intestinal reimplantation are still controversially discussed. Several studies have focused on complications of urinary reflux from direct end-to-side or end-to-end anastomosis, such as pyelonephritis and calculus formation. Strictures at the anastomotic site…
Idiopathic Retroperitoneal Fibrosis: What Is the Optimal Clinical Approach for Long-Term Preservation of Renal Function?
2022
<b><i>Background:</i></b> The aim of this study was to investigate the long-term effects of ureteral stenting and the exact timing of stent removal in favor of surgery in patients with idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis (IRF). <b><i>Summary:</i></b> Medline research terms of “idiopathic retroperitoneal fibrosis” AND “ medical therapy” OR “ureteral stenting” OR “surgical treatment” were done. Systematic reviews and observational and clinical studies were analyzed to obtain indication regarding the objective of the study for a narrative review. Ninety-two papers were analyzed. The treatment of IRF includes the monitoring of retroperitoneal fibr…
Fractional-order theory of thermoelasticicty. I: Generalization of the Fourier equation
2018
The paper deals with the generalization of Fourier-type relations in the context of fractional-order calculus. The instantaneous temperature-flux equation of the Fourier-type diffusion is generalized, introducing a self-similar, fractal-type mass clustering at the micro scale. In this setting, the resulting conduction equation at the macro scale yields a Caputo's fractional derivative with order [0,1] of temperature gradient that generalizes the Fourier conduction equation. The order of the fractional-derivative has been related to the fractal assembly of the microstructure and some preliminary observations about the thermodynamical restrictions of the coefficients and the state functions r…
A solar photothermo-catalytic combined process for the VOCs combustion and the subsequent CO2 valorization using noble metal-free catalysts
2023
We here investigated a solar photothermo-catalytic combined process where the toluene (as volatile organic compound model) was first oxidized to CO2 which was subsequently converted into solar fuels in a second reactor. For this aim two noble-metal free catalytic systems were used, namely MnOx-ZrO2, which gave the best results for the toluene removal, and brookite TiO2-CeO2 mixed oxides which were the most efficient in the subsequent CO2 conversion. This latter reaction was further improved by the addition of small amounts of copper-based materials on brookite-ceria, acting as co-catalysts. The key point for both the examined reactions was the synergism between the thermocatalytic and the p…
