The reader does matter or how to tell a story about post-war Czechoslovakia

2018

Interjections and Pragmatic Errors in Dubbing

2006

This paper consists of an analysis of the expressive secondary interjections found in the film Four Weddings and a Funeral and their equivalents in the Spanish and Catalan dubbed versions. The contrastive analysis of the interjections in the original English version compared with the Spanish and the Catalan dubbed versions shows that the strategies followed by the translators are different: literal translation is far more frequent in Spanish than in Catalan. Literal translation often implies an error that is pragmatic in nature since it derives from the misunderstanding of the pragmatic meaning that the interjection conveys.

This paper focuses on the relationship between gender and translation in the Galician literary system given a corpus of translations of literary texts written by women and publi…

Effect of the linkage location in double branched organic dyes on the photovoltaic performance of DSSCs

2015

Two novel double branched D–π–A organic dyes (DB dyes) are synthesized to investigate the influence of the linkage location in DB dyes on the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), where phenothiazine is introduced as a donor, thiophene–benzotriazole unit as the π-bridge and cyanoacrylic acid as the electron-acceptor. The photophysical, electrochemical and photovoltaic properties of the dyes are systematically investigated. The results show that the location of the linkage unit has a small effect on the physical and electrochemical properties of the dyes. However, when the dyes are applied in DSSCs, an obvious decline of short-circuit current (Jsc) and open-circuit voltage (Voc)…

Purification of hydroperoxide lyase from green bell pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) fruits for the generation of C6-aldehydes in vitro.

2002

The aim of this work was to compare the efficiency of different extracts of hydroperoxide lyase from green bell peppers in producing aldehydes: a crude extract, a chloroplastic fraction, and a purified enzyme were investigated. From a crude extract, the HPO lyase was purified by ion-exchange chromatography with a 22.3-fold increase in purification factor. Analysis by SDS-PAGE electrophoresis under denaturating conditions showed only one protein with a molecular weight of 55 kDa, whereas size-exclusion chromatography indicated a molecular weight of 170 kDa. A maximum of 7500 mg of aldehydes per g of protein was obtained with the purified enzyme within 20 min of bioconversion compared to 392 …

Folktales and Other References in Toriyama's Dragon Ball

2014

The aim of this article is to show the relationship between Japanese folktales and Japanese anime as a genre, especially how the intertextuality with traditional tales and myth subvert its conventional use. To meet this goal, the author examines Toriyama’s successful Dragon Ball series, which has enjoyed continued popularity right from its first publication in the 1980s. The article analyses the parallelism between Dragon Ball and a classic Chinese novel, Journey to the West, its main source. However, there are many other references present in Dragon Ball that are connected to religion and folktales. The author illustrates this relationship with examples taken from the anime that correspond…

Verb Phrase Inversion in fictional and non-fictional written english

2014

In the last decades, full inversion constructions in which the subject follows the entire verb phrase in a declarative clause, as in"Beside him was a table full of well-known books", have been the subject of extensive research from a functional perspective. This paper is a further contribution to this line of research and offers a corpus-based analysis of a particular type of full inversion, namely verb phrase inversion (for example,"Standing grim and alone was the hulking eyesore of the territorial prison"), in written English texts. In recent work on inversion, there does not seem to be complete agreement as regards the distribution of verb phrase inversion in fiction and non-fiction. On …

« Making Sense of Wilfred Owen’s Keatsian Heritage: “Exposure” and “Ode to a Nightingale” »

2020

Readers of Wilfred Owen usually agree that the war poet’s early admiration for John Keats faded after he enlisted in the army; his poetry then turned against Keats’s. The opening paraphrase of Owen’s poem “Exposure” is thus often read as a rejection and a subversion of the Romantic poet’s “Ode to a Nightingale.” This essay will argue that Owen’s poem can be seen as a radical reversal of Keats’s ode. While “Exposure” is indeed more violent and political than “Ode to a Nightingale,” it does not depart from Keats’s conception of human suffering and of nature. Instead, the war poem builds on Keats’s fleeting description of suffering humanity in “Ode to a Nightingale” and extends it. It also ech…

Scenes of Liturgy and Perversion In Bunuel

2004

The Christian religion is far from being an accidental component in Buñuel's work. All his films show complex transactions with its referents, oscillating between the popular ingenuity (la Ilusión viaja en tranvía), the boundless and hy…
