Deutschsprachige Validierung des Vertigo Handicap Questionnaire (VHQ) anhand einer Patientenstichprobe mit vestibulärem und somatoformem Schwindel

2010

The Vertigo Handicap Questionnaire (VHQ) by Yardley (1992) assesses physical and psychosocial impairments of vertigo or dizziness. Our study examines the structure, reliability, and aspects of validity of the German version of the VHQ. 98 vestibular vertigo syndromes vs. 90 patients with somatoform vertigo and dizziness were evaluated with the VHQ, symptom severity (VSS), distress (GSI), anxiety and depression (HADS), catastrophizing beliefs (ACQ), fear of body sensations (BSQ), and quality of life (SF-36). For diagnostic classification detailed clinical neurological, neuro-otological and psychosomatic testing were conducted. Principal components analysis identified two factors, which could…

ObjectiveMany people of all ages suffer from vertigo due to different reasons. The comparison of patient data with standard values can highlight deteriorations or changes in postural control and thus indicate, for example, an increased risk of falling. Our aim is to measure standard values for the postural control of young healthy women.DesignObservational study.SettingInstitute of Occupational Medicine, Social Medicine and Environmental Medicine, Goethe-University Frankfurt/Main.Participants106 healthy German female subjects aged between 21 and 30 years (25±2.7 years) were measured. Their average body mass index (BMI) was 21.1±2.61 kg/m².Outcome measuresA pressure measuring platform was us…

302 Hearing Abnormalities in Children with Fabry Disease: Data from FOS - the Fabry Outcome Survey

2005

Background: Fabry disease is an X-linked glycosphingolipid storage disorder due to a deficiency of the enzyme alpha-galactosidase A. Accumulation of substrate results in a progressive and life-threatening multisystemic disease. Early clinical manifestations include pain and gastrointestinal symptoms. Sensorineural hearing loss and vertigo are well-recognized features of the disorder, occurring in approximately 50% of adults with Fabry disease. We have investigated the audiological symptoms of Fabry disease in children using pure-tone and impedance audiometry. Methods: Symptom history was obtained using a standardized questionnaire from FOS − the Fabry Outcome Survey. Hearing was measured us…

Electronystagmography in the diagnosis of central vertigo.

2011

Objective: Determine the efficacy and applicability of electronystagmography (ENG) testing in the differential diagnosis between peripheral and central vertigo, through the visual-vestibular interaction test, in patients with vertigo.Method: Patients were submitted to ENG recording. Patients sat on a rotatory chair, which was placed in the middle of a rotary rotatory cylindrical chamber. The rotatory chamber was driven by a direct current engine, which turned it clockwise and counterclockwise, and its internal area was covered with 32 black vertical contrast. Results: All patients underwent rotatory vestibular stimulation by Stop test (VOR), optokinetic stimulation (OKN), and contemporary ro…

Intratympanic gentamicin: a one day protocol treatment for unilateral Meniere’s disease.

2007

Purpose: The objective of this study was to assess the usefulness of low-dose intratympanic gentamicin administration in patients with Meniere’s disease (MD). Materials and Methods: We carried out a retrospective review of the charts of 55 patients with definite MD in accordance with the AAO-HNS (American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery) Diagnostic Scale who were treated at Gruppo Otologico (Piacenza, Rome, Italy). The treatment protocol consisted of 3 intratympanic injections of gentamicin at a 12-hour interval between each administration. Results: Results were resumed in accordance with AAO-HNS criteria and showed complete control of vertigo spells in 60% (class A), good c…

Dizziness: Prevalence, risk factors and management

2021

Vertigo and dizziness are two conditions whose prevalence throughout an individual's lifespan is estimated to range from 20% to 50% with a marked incidence regarding women. Starting from the frequency of these symptoms, the book explores different aspects of the otoneurology field and the vestibular diseases, from the anatomy of vestibular organs to the pharmacological, surgical and rehabilitative treatment of posterior labyrinth disorders. In particular, the benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (VPPB), Meniere's disease and dizziness in patients suffering from temporomandibular joint disorders and vertebral fractures are described. A focus on specific techniques to evaluate vestibular diso…

Cocleo-labirintopatie nel bambino. Come non perdere l'equilibrio.

2021

Cochleo-labyrinthopathy (CL) is an affection that involves cochlea and vestibular system. It occurs with the association of auditory symptoms (sensorineural hearing loss and tinnitus), vestibular symptoms (objective vertigo, unidirectional horizontal-rotary nystagmus and static or dynamic balance disorders) and neurovegetative signs (nausea, vomiting, pallor, sweating, etc.). The diagnosis may be difficult in paediatric age since the child is unable to clearly express their discomfort and symptoms. Multiple causes have been recognized but, in acute cases, infection is the most frequent etiological agent. The paper describes a case of CL due to Herpes Virus 1-2 infection responsive to acyclo…
