Objectives: In many countries veterans from World War II are growing old. Research has shown that war experiences continue to impact those who have been involved in war for a long time. The present study targets old injured war veterans from World War II in Finland. Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is usually classified into a two-stage system, limited (LD) and extensive disease (ED). However, the criteria for these two categories remain controversial. The widely used Veterans Administration Lung Study Group (VALG) definition of LD includes patients with primary tumor and nodal involvement limited to one hemithorax. In contrast, the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) recommends that LD should additionally include all patients without distant metastasis. Studies concerning music and identity have shown that the music which an individual values as important tells stories about the subjective reality of the individual (Lehtonen & Niemelä 1997; Baker & Wigram 2004). Through the use of individualized meaningful music in music therapy, a possibility for raising and evaluating processes connected with identity can be created (Magee & Davidson 2004b).
