On the Frequency Behaviour, Stability and Isolation Properties of Dry Friction Oscillators

This paper proposes a new approach to the frequency responses of one-degree-of-freedom oscillators subject to periodic excitations in presence of mixed dry-viscous friction. The idea is to get free from the analysis of one fixed system by letting the physical parameters cover their own whole ranges and investigating the various behavioural aspects of wide classes of oscillators. The existence, uniqueness and stability of the steady-state solutions are analysed in detail, assuming different coefficients of static and sliding friction. Theory of vibrational anomalies in glasses

Abstract The theory of elasticity with spatially fluctuating elastic constants (heterogeneous-elasticity theory) is reviewed. It is shown that the vibrational anomalies associated with the boson peak can be qualitatively and quantitatively explained in terms of this theory. Two versions of a mean-field theory for solving the stochastic equation of motion are presented: the coherent-potential approximation (CPA) and the self-consistent Born approximation (SCBA). It is shown that the latter is included in the former in the Gaussian and weak-disorder limit. Vibrational Excitation Hindering an Ion-Molecule Reaction: The c−C3H2+−H2 Collision Complex

Experiments within a cryogenic 22-pole ion trap have revealed an interesting reaction dynamic phenomenon, where rovibrational excitation of an ionic molecule slows down a reaction with a neutral partner. This is demonstrated for the low-temperature hydrogen abstraction reaction $\mathrm{c}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{C}}_{3}{{\mathrm{H}}_{2}}^{+}+{\mathrm{H}}_{2}$, where excitation of the ion into the ${\ensuremath{\nu}}_{7}$ antisymmetric C-H stretching mode decreased the reaction rate coefficient toward the products $\mathrm{c}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{C}}_{3}{{\mathrm{H}}_{3}}^{+}+\mathrm{H}$. Excitation spectra of solitary waves in scalar field models with polynomial self-interaction

We study excitations of solitary waves -- the kinks -- in scalar models with degree eight polynomial self-interaction in (1+1) dimensions. We perform numerical studies of scattering of two kinks with an exponential asymptotic off each other and analyse the occurring resonance phenomena. We connect these phenomena to the energy exchange between the translational and the vibrational modes of the colliding kinks. We also point out that the interaction of two kinks with power-law asymptotic can lead to a long-range interaction between the two kinks.

Structural damage detection using auto correlation functions of vibration response under sinusoidal excitation

Structural damage detection using time domain vibration responses has attracted more and more researchers in recent years because of its simplicity in calculation and no requirement of a finite element model. New ground state constants of 12CH335Cl and 12CH337Cl from global polyad analysis

Abstract A global analysis of the infrared spectrum of chloromethane involving the ground state and the 13 vibrational states lying up to 2600 cm −1 was recently achieved using high resolution Fourier transform spectra of pure isotopomers. More than 20 000 transitions (cold and hot bands) for each isotopomer 12 CH 3 35 Cl and 12 CH 3 37 Cl have been assigned and fitted with a standard deviation of about 3 × 10 −4  cm −1 close to the experimental precison. High-frequency vibrational density of states of a disordered solid.

We investigate the high-frequency behavior of the density of vibrational states in three-dimensional elasticity theory with spatially fluctuating elastic moduli. At frequencies well above the mobility edge, instanton solutions yield an exponentially decaying density of states. The instanton solutions describe excitations, which become localized due to the disorder-induced fluctuations, which lower the sound velocity in a finite region compared to its average value. The exponentially decaying density of states (known in electronic systems as the Lifshitz tail) is governed by the statistics of a fluctuating-elasticity landscape, capable of trapping the vibrational excitations.

Disentangling boson peaks and Van Hove singularities in a model glass

Using the example of a two-dimensional macroscopic model glass in which the interparticle forces can be precisely measured, we obtain strong hints for resolving a controversy concerning the origin of the anomalous enhancement of the vibrational spectrum in glasses (boson peak). Whereas many authors attribute this anomaly to the structural disorder, some other authors claim that the short-range order, leading to washed-out Van Hove singularities, would cause the boson-peak anomaly. Angular and temperature dependence of the magnetic circular dichroism in4dcore-level photoemission from Gd(0001)

We present experimental and theoretical results for the angular and temperature dependence of magnetic circular dichroism in Gd $4d$ core-level photoelectron emission from a Gd(0001) surface in both normal and off-normal directions and with azimuthal variation. Two theoretical approaches are used to model this data: a single electron theory with full multiple scattering of the outgoing photoelectron and a full-relativistic many-electron theory with single scattering only. Thermal effects due to atomic vibrations and the excitation of initial-state multiplets are also included.
