Fitting Simpson's neutrino into the standard model

1985

Abstract I show how to accomodate the 17 keV state recently reported by Simpson as one of the neutrinos of the standard model. Experimental constraints can only be satisfied if the μ and τ neutrino combine to a very good approximation to form a Dirac neutrino of 17 keV leaving a light ν e . Neutrino oscillations will provide the most stringent test of the model. The cosmological bounds are also satisfied in a natural way in models with Goldstone bosons. Explicit examples are given in the framework of majoron-type models. Constraints on the lepton symmetry breaking scale which follow from astrophysics, cosmology and laboratory experiments are discussed.

Neutrinos as the messengers of CPT violation

2001

CPT violation has the potential to explain all three existing neutrino anomalies without enlarging the neutrino sector. CPT violation in the Dirac mass terms of the three neutrino flavors preserves Lorentz invariance, but generates independent masses for neutrinos and antineutrinos. This specific signature is strongly motivated by braneworld scenarios with extra dimensions, where neutrinos are the natural messengers for Standard Model physics of CPT violation in the bulk. A simple model of maximal CPT violation is sufficient to explain the exisiting neutrino data quite neatly, while making dramatic predictions for the upcoming KamLAND and MiniBooNE experiments. Furthermore we obtain a promi…

Flavour-symmetric type-II Dirac neutrino seesaw mechanism

2018

We propose a Standard Model extension with underlying A4 flavour symmetry where small Dirac neutrino masses arise from a Type-II seesaw mechanism. The model predicts the "golden" flavour-dependent bottom-tau mass relation, requires an inverted neutrino mass ordering and non-maximal atmospheric mixing angle. Using the latest neutrino oscillation global fit we derive restrictions on the oscillation parameters, such as a correlation between Dirac CP phase and the lightest neutrino mass.

The optical/UV filters for the EPIC experiment

1998

EPIC, the European Photon Imaging Cameras is an experiment based on cooled CCDs on board the ESA X-ray Multi Mirrors satellite due to be launched in 1999. Since CCD's are sensitive to radiation other than X-rays, namely Optical and UV light, filters are necessary to prevent this radiation from reaching the detector sensitive area. Three types of filters were developed, to be used alternatively depending on target source. Here we report on the medium and thin filters developed by MOXTEK Inc. in Orem, Utah, while the thick ones, developed at the Max-Planck-Institut fur Extraterrestrische Physik (MPE, Germany) have been described elsewhere. The two filters, described here, have a 1600 /spl Ari…

The new nuclide225U

1989

In the bombardment of a 270μg/cm 2 180Hf target with48 Ca projectiles at a primary beam energy of E/A=4.24 MeV/u the new nuclide225U was produced. The experiment was performed at the velocity filter SHIP. 225U was found to decay by α emission with Eα=(7880 ±20) keV (≈90%), (7830±20) keV (≈10%) and has a half-life ofT 1/2=(80 −20 +40 ms).

Photonic microwave tunable single-bandpass filter based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer

2006

The authors present the theoretical analysis and experimental demonstration of a novel single-bandpass tunable microwave filter. The filter is based on a broadband optical source and a fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer and shows a high Q factor over a tuning range of 5-17 GHz. A generalized analysis considering that the optical signal propagates along optical delay lines with a dispersion slope different from zero is presented.

Seesaw Dirac neutrino mass through dimension-six operators

2018

In this paper, a follow-up of [S. C. Chuliá, R. Srivastava, and J. W. F. Valle, Phys. Lett. B 781, 122 (2018)], we describe the many pathways to generate Dirac neutrino mass through dimension-six operators. By using only the standard model Higgs doublet in the external legs, one gets a unique operator 1Λ2L¯Φ¯Φ¯ΦνR. In contrast, the presence of new scalars implies new possible field contractions, which greatly increase the number of possibilities. Here, we study in detail the simplest ones, involving SU(2)L singlets, doublets, and triplets. The extra symmetries needed to ensure the Dirac nature of neutrinos can also be responsible for stabilizing dark matter.

Testing generalized CP symmetries with precision studies at DUNE

2019

We examine the capabilities of the DUNE experiment in probing leptonic CP violation within the framework of theories with generalized CP symmetries characterized by the texture zeros of the corresponding CP transformation matrices. We investigate DUNE's potential to probe the two least known oscillation parameters, the atmospheric mixing angle $\theta_{23}$ and the Dirac CP-phase $\delta_{\rm CP}$. We fix theory-motivated benchmarks for ($ \sin^2\theta_{23}, \delta_{\rm CP} $) and take them as true values in our simulations. Assuming 3.5 years of neutrino running plus 3.5 years in the antineutrino mode, we show that in all cases DUNE can significantly constrain and in certain cases rule out…

Charge and magnetic moment of the neutrino in the background field method and in the linear R-xi(L) gauge

1999

We present a computation of the charge and the magnetic moment of the neutrino in the recently developed electro-weak Background Field Method and in the linear $R_{\xi}^L$ gauge. First, we deduce a formal Ward-Takahashi identity which implies the immediate cancellation of the neutrino electric charge. This Ward-Takahashi identity is as simple as that for QED. The computation of the (proper and improper) one loop vertex diagrams contributing to the neutrino electric charge is also presented in an arbitrary gauge, checking in this way the Ward-Takahashi identity previously obtained. Finally, the calculation of the magnetic moment of the neutrino, in the minimal extension of the Standard Model…

Fascinating puzzle called double beta decay

2019

The question of whether neutrinos are Majorana or Dirac particles and what are their average masses remains one of the most fundamental problems in physics today. Observation of neutrinoless double beta decay (0νββ) would verify the Majorana nature of the neutrino and constrain the absolute scale of the neutrino mass spectrum. The inverse half-life for 0νββ-decay is given by the product of a phase space factor (PSF), a nuclear matrix element (NME), which both rely on theoretical description, and a function f containing the physics beyond the standard model. Recent calculations of PSF and NME will be reviewed together with comparison to other available results. These calculations serve the p…
