An interest-aware video streaming platform: Shaping its architecture to better suit users' demands

2014

This paper investigates how a p2p television platform can take advantage of the presence of frequent channel viewers to grant them a more satisfying service than to less regular spectators. The idea we explore is to learn beforehand about the users’ interests, in order to cluster them in groups that display different behaviors; then, the video chunk scheduling algorithm of the p2p overlay is altered, with the aim of serving frequent spectators in a privileged manner, providing them with a faster access to the selected channel. An analytical model is developed, to capture the difference in startup delay that the proposed changes introduce; several additional performance metrics are numerical…

Integrating Variability Management in Data Center Networks

2017

International audience; Data centers have an important role in supporting cloud computing services (i.e. checking social media, sending emails, video conferencing,..). Hence, data centers topologies design became more important and must be able to respond to ever changing service requirements and application demands. An ultimate challenge in this research is the design of data center network that interconnects the massive number of servers, and provides efficient and fault-tolerant routing algorithm. Several topologies such as DCell, FlatNet and ScalNet have been proposed. However, these topologies generally seek to improve the scalability without taking into consideration the energy usage …

Robust refinement of initial prototypes for partitioning-based clustering algorithms

2007

Non-uniqueness of solutions and sensitivity to erroneous data are common problems to large-scale data clustering tasks. In order to avoid poor quality of solutions with partitioning-based clustering methods, robust estimates (that are highly insensitive to erroneous data values) are needed and initial cluster prototypes should be determined properly. In this paper, a robust density estimation initialization method that exploits the spatial median estimate to the prototype update is presented. Besides being insensitive to noise and outliers, the new method is also computationally comparable with other traditional methods. The methods are compared by numerical experiments on a set of syntheti…

Quantifying Mean Shape and Variability of Footprints Using Mean Sets

2005

This paper1 presents an application of several definitions of a mean set for use in footwear design. For a given size, footprint pressure images corresponding to different individuals constitute our raw data. Appropriate footwear design needs to have knowledge of some kind of typical footprint. Former methods based on contour relevant points are highly sensitive to contour noise; moreover, they lack repeatability because of the need for the intervention of human designers. The method proposed in this paper is based on using mean sets on the thresholded images of the pressure footprints. Three definitions are used, two of them from Vorob’ev and Baddeley-Molchanov and one morphological mean p…

Extraction of Endmembers from Spectral Mixtures

1999

Abstract Linear spectral mixture modeling (LSMM) divides each ground resolution element into its constituent materials using endmembers which represent the spectral characteristics of the cover types. However, it is difficult to identify and estimate the spectral signature of pure components or endmembers which form the scene, since they vary with the scale and purpose of the study. We propose three different methods to estimate the spectra of pure components from a set of unknown mixture spectra. Two of the methods consist in different optimization procedures based on objective functions defined from the coordinate axes of the dominant factors. The third one consists in the design of a neu…

A System to Simplify the Use of Mounted Shakers for Harvesting Olives and Dry Fruits

2009

The shakers for harvesting olives and dry fruits have reached a high standard and their use is increasing rapidly. In order to satisfy the different demand, manufacturers offer a wide range of shakers, from the more expensive self-propelled ones to those to be mounted on the tractor’s power lift, with shaking headers of different mass and size, suitable for the different orchard characteristics. Self-propelled shakers have high steering capacity and optimum visual field for the operator, so their working capacity is very high with respect to that of mounted shakers, which are less expensive but have lower steering capacity and a limited view on the header. Therefore the approaching of mount…

Segmentation and feature extraction in capillaroscopic videos

2015

This contribution describes a method to select regions of interest as capillaries of the oral mucosa and to extract their main features useful for real diagnosis purposes. A discrete version of the wavelet transform has been adopted for segmenting the images coming from video sequences acquired by a prototype capillaroscopic, able to put in evidence the red blood flow. A set of proper characteristics is automatically computed for a correct evaluation of the peripheral microcirculation.

Content Based Indexing of Image and Video Databases by Global and Shape Features

1996

Indexing and retrieval methods based on the image content are required to effectively use information from the large repositories of digital images and videos currently available. Both global (colour, texture, motion, etc.) and local (object shape, etc.) features are needed to perform a reliable content based retrieval. We present a method for automatic extraction of global image features, like colour and motion parameters, and their use for data restriction in video database querying. Further retrieval is therefore accomplished, in a restricted set of images, by shape feature (skeleton, local symmetry moments, correlation, etc.) local search. The proposed indexing methodology has been deve…

Prnu Pattern Alignment for Images and Videos Based on Scene Content

2019

This paper proposes a novel approach for registering the PRNU pattern between different camera acquisition modes by relying on the imaged scene content. First, images are aligned by establishing correspondences between local descriptors: The result can then optionally be refined by maximizing the PRNU correlation. Comparative evaluations show that this approach outperforms those based on brute-force and particle swarm optimization in terms of reliability, accuracy and speed. The proposed scene-based approach for PRNU pattern alignment is suitable for video source identification in multimedia forensics applications.
