‘Teachers see nothing’ : exploring students’ and teachers’ perspectives on school bullying with a new arts-based methodology

Even though bullying is a perennial problem, there are still significant gaps in the research. The sensitive nature of the issue prompted us to develop and test a new arts-based method – a set of incomplete, problem-focused comic strips that were given to the participants for creative completion and were subsequently used as individualised interview prompts. The study took place in Russia with 14 teachers and 39 school children. The findings indicated that students and teachers agreed that instances of bullying should not be reported. School Bullying Through Graphic Vignettes : Developing a New Arts-Based Method to Study a Sensitive Topic

The purpose of this study was to develop a new arts-based measure assessing school bullying and to test it within a pilot study involving 19 schoolchildren (mean age = 15.4; range = 1.00). The researchers designed the new methodological tool (referred to as graphic vignettes) as a set of incomplete comic strips, which participants were asked to complete in a creative way. Researchers then invited participants to engage in follow-up interviews using completed comic strips as individualized interview prompts. There is a limited understanding of career development of sport coaches, especially from the subjective perspective focused on personal meaning and evaluation of this life project in sport. We drew on career construction theory and narrative methodology to explore football coaches’ career development, adaptability resources, and the meanings they assigned to their journeys. Ten women’s football (soccer) coaches (2 women) aged 23-60 in England took part in narrative interviews which we analysed using thematic narrative analysis. Profit vs morality: how unfair is labor market discrimination? Results from a survey experiment

Using an original survey-experimental protocol, we study the normative acceptability of the trade-off between immoral profit (discrimination) and costly morality (non-discrimination). We test the causal influence of three factors: i) the origin of discrimination, ii) the steepness of the morality/profit trade-off and iii) anti-discriminatory moral injunctions. Contrasting with past experimental and attitudinal studies, we find that a significant minority of respondents believe that labor market discrimination is acceptable when morality results in profit loss. Interest in studying teaching practices has increased, because of the need to evaluate teachers and dissatisfaction with the usual ways of doing it. Recent approaches with Value-Added Models, based on students’ results on achievement tests do not seem satisfactory. The article is based on a review of literature and classifies the approaches to practices in three groups: instruments based on information given by teachers; observation protocols; and approaches based on the analysis of products of the practices.
