Anti-vimentin staining in muscle pathology

The intermediate filaments of immature muscle fibres contain desmin and vimentin; vimentin is lacking in mature fibres. Regenerating fibres react with anti-vimentin antibodies and more intensely for desmin than mature fibres. The aim of the present study was to evaluate anti-vimentin staining for muscle pathology. Anti-vimentin-reactive fibres were found in 40 of 89 biopsies assessed. Fifteen patients with progressive destructive myopathy, infantile spinal muscular atrophy, clinically suspected Leigh's disease or unclassifiable congenital myopathy had between 1% and 95% vimentin-positive fibres. Background Kveim-reagent (Kv) skin testing was a historical method of diagnosing sarcoidosis. Polyelectrolyte properties of filamentous biopolymers and their consequences in biological fluids.

Anionic polyelectrolyte filaments are common in biological cells. DNA, RNA, the cytoskeletal filaments F-actin, microtubules, and intermediate filaments, and polysaccharides such as hyaluronan that form the pericellular matrix all have large net negative charge densities distributed over their surfaces. Several filamentous viruses with diameters and stiffnesses similar to those of cytoskeletal polymers also have similar negative charge densities. Asthmatic changes in mice lacking T-bet are mediated by IL-13

Mice with a targeted deletion of the T-bet gene exhibit spontaneous airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR), airway inflammation, enhanced recovery of T(h)2 cytokines from bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, sub-epithelial collagen deposition and myofibroblast transformation. Here we analyze the mechanisms responsible for the chronic airway remodeling observed in these mice. Interclonal heterogeneity in a human epithelioid-sarcoma cell line (Gru-1)

Three clonal sub-populations, GRU-IA, GRU-IB, and GRU-IC, isolated from the human epithelioid sarcoma cell line GRU-I, were characterized morphologically, cytogenetically and with regard to proliferation kinetics. Immunocytochemically, major differences became evident in the expression of cytokeratin 18 and neurofilament proteins, which are indicative for epithelial and neural differentiation respectively. Primary angiosarcoma of the alveolar mucosa in a haemodialysis patient: case report and discussion

A case of a haemodialysis patient with a primitive angiosarcoma of the alveolar mucosa is reported. The vascular origin of the tumor was confirmed by the immunohistochemical data which showed strong positivity for Factor VIII-related antigen and for vimentin, whereas stains for desmin and cytokeratins were negative.

Immunocytochemical study of an endometrial diffuse clear cell stromal sarcoma and other endometrial stromal sarcomas

Intermediate filament composition was studied in the following endometrial stromal tumors: low-grade stromal sarcoma (endolymphatic stromal myosis), high-grade stromal sarcoma with an associated adenocarcinoma (collision tumor), diffuse clear cell stromal sarcoma and a mesodermal mixed tumor (carcinosarcoma). The tumor cells of the stromal tumors as well as the mesenchymal elements of the mixed mesodermal tumor were decorated exclusively with antibodies to vimentin. Cytoskeletal components of lymphoid organs

Using light and electron microscopic immunolocalization with antibodies to cytoskeletal proteins, we have characterized the nonlymphoid cells of various human lymphoid organs (lymph nodes, tonsils, spleen). In all these tissues, the lymphoid follicles contain a three-dimensional meshwork of "dendritic reticulum cells" which are characterized by the presence of desmosomal junctions, as demonstrated by positive punctate staining with antibodies to the desmosome-specific proteins desmoplakin I and desmoglein, and by intermediate-sized filaments (IFs) of the vimentin type only.
