Incarcerated women, welfare services and the process of re-entering society in Finland

The pathways in and out of crime differ according to gender, people’s life histories, social situations and networks. Before being sentenced, many women have been living in vulnerable and traumatic life situations and violent relationships. Substance abuse often plays a crucial role in committing crimes. Being released from prison and re-entering society is a process that requires women’s own motivation to desist along with help and support from society. Successful adaptation of immigrants to Finland : can cultural fusion work?

Immigration numbers in Finland are growing, more than doubling in the past decade, with immigrants arriving from increasingly diverse regions of the world. An attempt should be made to understand what are the factors that lead immigrants to finding happiness, and to mitigate the apparent rise in assimilation and anti-immigrant attitude in Finland. Most of the interviewees (n=16; 7 females, 9 males) have embedded themselves in dispersed communities, with connections from the workplace, studies, or common interests (e.g., religion, hobbies) that rarely including their immediate neighbors. This study examined, first, basic human values’ and life goals’ factor structures and the reciprocal links between these measures; second, the connections between personality traits and values, and possible gender differences in these relations; and third, the relations between life goals and mental well-being, and whether life goals act as mediators in the associations between personality traits and mental well-being. Tässä pro gradu-tutkielmassa tarkasteltiin tyypin 1 diabetesta sairastavien nuorten psykologista joustavuutta, mielialaa ja elämänlaatua kohderyhmässä, jossa hoitotasapaino on heikko. Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli kartoittaa nuorten masennus- ja ahdistuneisuusoireiden sekä elämänlaadun tasoa. Lisäksi tutkimuksen tarkoituksena oli tarkastella hoitotasapainon yhteyttä elämänlaatuun sekä masennus- ja ahdistuneisuusoireisiin. Intergenerational fitness effects on offspring due to the early life of the parent are well studied from the standpoint of the maternal environment, but intergenerational effects owing to the paternal early life environment are often overlooked. Nonetheless, recent laboratory studies in mammals and ecologically relevant studies in invertebrates predict that paternal effects can have a major impact on the offspring's phenotype.
