Impacts of Touch Screen Size, User Interface Design, and Subtask Boundaries on In-Car Task's Visual Demand and Driver Distraction

2020

Visual distraction by secondary in-car tasks is a major contributing factor in traffic incidents. In-car user interface design may mitigate these negative effects but to accomplish this, design factors’ visual distraction potential should be better understood. The effects of touch screen size, user interface design, and subtask boundaries on in-car task's visual demand and visual distraction potential were studied in two driving simulator experiments with 48 participants. Multilevel modeling was utilized to control the visual demands of driving and individual differences on in-car glance durations. The 2.5” larger touch screen slightly decreased the in-car glance durations and had a diminis…

Taide, kieli ja kotoutuminen : keskusteleva kuvan tarkastelu aikuisten maahanmuuttajien kielenoppimisen tukena

2017

Tutkielmassa tarkastelen Visual Thinking Strategies -menetelmän soveltamista maahan muuttaneiden kielenopetukseen. VTS eli keskusteleva kuvan tarkastelu on yksinkertainen, keskusteluun perustuva taiteen tarkastelun menetelmä, jossa edetään osallistujien lähtökohdista, esitetään avoimia kysymyksiä ja sanallistetaan näköhavaintoja. Toisen kielen eli enemmistön äidinkielen oppimista pidetään yhtenä onnistuneen kotoutumisen edellytyksistä. Tutkimustehtävänä on selvittää, miten keskusteleva kuvan tarkastelu auttaa aikuisia maahanmuuttajia oppimaan suomea ja siten kotoutumaan. Laadullisen tutkimuksen strategiana on toimintatutkimus ja kohteena maahanmuuttajille suunnattu Keskustellaan kuvista -ku…

The mechanism of retro-cue effect in visual working memory : Cognitive phase separation

2020

Retro-cue effect (RCE) refers to the phenomenon that individuals can use retro-cues to improve their visual working memory (VWM) performance of target items after memory stimuli disappear. To explain the mechanism of RCE in VWM, five different hypotheses have been proposed by previous studies: the hypothesis of enhancing target representations, the hypothesis of forgetting non-target representations, the hypothesis of preventing memory degradation, the hypothesis of preventing interference from probe array and the hypothesis of cognitive phase separation. Although RCE has been repeatedly observed in previous studies, the mechanism of RCE remains unclear. In this study, we conducted three ex…

Endophytic Fungi in Asymptomatic Vitis vinifera L. and their Effects on Plasmopara viticola

2016

During a multi-year study on the life cycle of Plasmopara viticola to assess the typical epidemiology of downy mildew on grapevine (Vitis vinifera) in west Sicily (Italy), several leaves on which the downy mildew had collapsed were found and observed in a vineyard located in Marsala, in Trapani Province. An antagonistic fungus was isolated from these leaves and named A20; through its morphology, it was identified as a hyphomycete belonging to the genus Acremonium. The antagonism of A20 against the asexual and sexual spores of P. viticola, as well as endophytic nature of the genus Acremonium in V. vinifera were confirmed by further studies which have been carried out over the past decade. In…

Oikealle alalle? : logistiikka-alan ammattikoulutuksen ja työelämän osaamisen todellisuuksien kohtaaminen

2016

The aim of this doctoral thesis was to study how vocational education and training (VET) and working life encounter each other. Naturally the research topic chosen was selected from the researcher´s own professional field, i.e., logistics education. The research task was to examine, how VET-students' professional expectations in the study field of logistics encounter with the working life realities. The main research question was “How do the logistics (driver training) students’ vocational expectations encounter with the requirements of dynamically changing working life from the point of view of the vocational competence, the time span of 2001-2025?” The two sub-questions were 1) How do the…

Voluntary pension funds contribution in the pension system of Latvia in comparison with Estonia and Lithuania

2020

Pension system formation is one of the questions on the daily agenda for most countries of the world. Most attention and discussion focus on the first two pension system pillars – state compulsory unfunded pension scheme and the state-funded or accumulated pension scheme in pension funds, both based on mandatory contributions. Private voluntary investments are the “third pillar” of pension systems and the gear to ensure an adequate level of income at retirement age by creating private pension funds. Voluntary savings are becoming the source of retirement income received on a monthly basis in line with the progress of private pension funds and expansion of the choice of pension schemes. This…
