Influence of metal ions on thermal aggregation of bovine serum albumin: aggregation kinetics and structural changes
2009
Metal ions are implicated in protein aggregation processes of several neurodegenerative pathologies. In this work the effects of Cu(II) and Zn(II) ions on heat-induced structural modifications of bovine serum albumin (BSA) were studied, with the aim of delineating the role of these ions in the early stages of proteins aggregation kinetics. A joint application of different techniques was used. The aggregate growth was followed by dynamic light scattering measurements, whereas the conformational changes occurring in the protein structure were monitored by Raman and IR spectroscopy. Both in absence and in presence of metal ions, heating treatment gave rise to b-structures to the detriment of a…
"Nykyään sitä on oppinut arvostaa" : nuorten, joilla on CP- vamma, kokemuksia pitkäaikaisesta fysioterapiasta
2012
Pro gradu- tutkimukseni tarkoituksena on ymmärtää ja kuvata nuorten, joilla on CP- vamma, kokemuksia pitkäaikaisesta fysioterapiasta fenomenologis- hermeneuttisen tutkimusasetelman kautta. Tutkimus liittyy laajempaan Jyväskylän yliopiston koordinoimaan Potilasohjaus fysioterapiassa – projektiin ja sillä on tutkimuslupa HUS:n eettiseltä toimikunnalta. Tutkimukseen osallistui 10 nuorta, joilla on ollut fysioterapiaa pienestä lapsesta lähtien, 16-22 -vuotta. Aineisto kerättiin avoimien yksilöllisten haastattelujen avulla ja analysoitiin Spiegelbergin (1982) ja Laineen (2010) aineistoanalyysimenetelmän kautta. Tutkimukseen osallistuneiden nuorten merkityskokonaisuuksina ilmenivät: fysioterapia …
Qui suis-je : Discontinuity as part of teacher identity in Canadian French immersion
2020
The scarcity of research on French immersion teachers’ professional identity contrasts with the increasing popularity of French immersion programs in Canada and the concomitant need for French immersion teachers. This study explores the professional identity negotiation of four French immersion teachers in Alberta, Canada, with a focus on discontinuity. Semi-structured interviews conducted face-to-face with the participants were analysed using dialogic narrative analysis. The findings highlight how discontinuity is occasioned by a change in knowledge about the French immersion teaching as a profession, encountering classroom realities, shifting one’s values concerning second language learni…
alpha GalNAc is essential for recognition of Exo-1 epithelial antigen by mouse monoclonal antibody Pa-G-14.
1993
Mouse monoclonal antibody Pa-G-14 detects Exo-1, an antigen whose expression is regulated in the processes of epithelial-cell differentiation and transformation. The epitope recognized by Pa-G-14 is present both in glycosphingolipids and in mucin glycoproteins. To characterize the specificity of Pa-G-14, immuno-thin-layer chromatography, biochemical, and enzymatic treatment of glycosphingolipid extracts from human pancreas were used. The antibody bound to all blood-group-A substances; alpha GalNAc, but not fucose, was essential for reactivity. In ELISA, Pa-G-14 also reacted with ovine and bovine submaxillary mucins but not with porcine submaxillary mucin. Binding to ovine submaxillary mucin…
Bovine seminal ribonuclease is cytotoxic for both malignant and normal telomerase-positive cells
2005
Bovine seminal-ribonuclease (BS-RNase) is a member of the 'ribonucleases with special biological actions' family since it possesses specific anti-tumour, anti-spermatogenic and embryotoxic activities and exerts an immunosuppressive effect on T lymphocytes. In previous studies it was demonstrated that BS-RNase induced apoptosis in proliferating, malignant and normal cells and that telomerase activity loss also caused apoptotic death in neoplastic cells. Since an obvious relationship between cell proliferation and telomerase activity exists, the aim of this work was to study if the pro-apoptotic cytotoxic action exerted by BS-RNase on proliferating malignant cells (HT29) and proliferating nor…
SMOS REFLEX 2003: L-band emissivity characterization of vineyards
2005
The goal of the Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity mission over land is to infer surface soil moisture from multiangular L-band radiometric measurements. As the canopy affects the microwave emission of land, it is necessary to characterize different vegetation layers. This paper presents the Reference Pixel L-Band Experiment (REFLEX), carried out in June-July 2003 at the Vale/spl grave/ncia Anchor Station, Spain, to study the effects of grapevines on the soil emission and on the soil moisture retrieval. A wide range of soil moisture (SM), from saturated to completely dry soil, was measured with the Universitat Polite/spl grave/cnica de Catalunya's L-band Automatic Radiometer (LAURA). Concurre…
Grapevine row orientation mediated temporal and cumulative microclimatic effects on grape berry temperature and composition
2021
Abstract Ambient radiation and temperature are global drivers of grapevine growth, grape yield and composition, and wine quality. Knowledge of the implications of vineyard row orientation/microclimate is required for decision-making in current and future macro- and mesoclimates. Temporal and cumulative microclimatic changes, induced by vine row orientation (NS; EW; NE-SW; NW-SE) of vertically trellised Shiraz grapevines, on berry pulp temperature and composition at different ripeness levels were investigated. Berries dynamically gained heat energy relative to: ambient climate/weather; direct canopy wall/bunch irradiance; and berry skin colour development. Berries exposed to direct solar rad…
Influence of Component Temperature Derivation from Dual Angle Thermal Infrared Observations on TSEB Flux Estimates Over an Irrigated Vineyard
2015
A two-source model for deriving surface energy fluxes and their soil and canopy components was evaluated using multi-angle airborne observations. In the original formulation (TSEB1), a single temperature observation, Priestley–Taylor parameterization and the vegetation fraction are used to derive the component fluxes. When temperature observations are made from different angles, soil and canopy temperatures can be extracted directly. Two dual angle model versions are compared versus TSEB1: one incorporating the Priestley–Taylor parameterization (TSEB2I) and one using the component temperatures directly (TSEB2D), for which data from airborne campaigns over an agricultural area in Spain are u…
Response of vine leaf water potential to quick variation in canopy exposure. Example of canopy opening manipulation of Merlot (<em>Vitis vinife…
2004
<p style="text-align: justify;">Plants are in general subject to rapid fluctuations in the environment, particularly as regards the interception of light and therefore water regime. It is important to know the duration and the amplitude of response of the water regime (first leaf water potential) when light interception changes suddenly under natural conditions. widely planted grape variety in the world) was chosen mainly because it offers convenient possibilities of canopy manipulation, ranging from an open and exposed type architecture, to a closed and shaded configurations simply by moving inside or outside a «foldable Lyre» type trellis. Leaf water potential was measured throughou…
Productive and vegetative behaviour of olive cultivars in super high-density olive grove
2015
In recent years, there has been an increase in interest in super high-density (SHD) olive (Olea europaea L.) groves because they offer early entry into production, increased productivity and the possibility of using modified mechanical vine harvesters. This study was carried out in a young SHD olive grove to examine vegetative, histo-anatomical and productive characteristics and oil quality of the Spanish Arbequina and Italian Maurino and Leccino cultivars, characterized by low, low-to-medium and high vigor, respectively. Arbequina had low vigor and limited development in height and width, as well as a high leaf/wood ratio. Maurino had a canopy volume similar to that of Arbequina and, despi…
