‘Strong and courageous’ but ‘constantly insecure’: dialogical self theory, intersecting identities, and Christian mixed martial arts

2021

Being a mixed martial arts fighter and a devout Christian seems to present an apparent contradiction that requires identity work to bring these identities into unity. We used Dialogical Self Theory and explored the autobiography of Ron ‘H2O’ Waterman, a professional fighter turned evangelist, to understand how the tensions between the different identities or I-positions were negotiated. We identified two I-positions, ‘Ron the Fighter’ and ‘Ron the Pater Familias’, which related differently to religion, sport, and masculinity. Importantly, the negotiations were not between MMA and faith, but between these two I-positions that served the different needs for self-enhancement and union with som…

The epistemological complexity of ideal care : long-term care professionals’ perspectives

2022

The article elaborates what aspects of knowledge eldercare workers describe concerning everyday long-term care practices. The article utilises a thematic analysis of Finnish long-term care workers’ semi-structured interviews (n = 25), and in doing so, it contributes to the discussion concerning the epistemological basis of care. The analysis specifies four aspects of knowledge in long-term care work: objective/objectifying, particular, corporeal and tacit. In line with existing literature on knowledge and care, the findings indicate that rational-technical epistemological approaches are insufficient when complex and fluid care relations are concerned. Moreover, cognitive impairments and oth…

Potential use of grapevine cv Askari for heavy metal phytoremediation purposes at greenhouse scale

2020

Grapevine varieties possess desirable characteristics for phytoremediation purposes. We investigated the potential of grapevine cv Askari in phytoremediation of heavy metal (HM) pollutions. In total 80 grapevine seedlings were exposed to four levels of HM stress (mild, low, moderate, and severe) in greenhouse condition during two growing years (2018 and 2019). The HM concentrations (Zn, Cu, Cd, Cr, and Pb) were subsequently determined in the soils, roots, and grapevine aboveground parts (AGPs), and then phytoextraction and phytostabilization potential assessment indices, i.e., biological absorption coefficient (BAC), bioconcentration factor (BCF), and translocation factor (TF), were calcula…

Heat inactivation of fetal bovine serum increases protein contamination of extracellular vesicles

2022

Introduction: Extracellular vesicles (EVs) released in cell cultures are influenced by the cell culture conditions, such as the use of fetal bovine serum (FBS). FBS contains EVs and it is usually depleted of EVs by ultracentrifugation (UC) and/or heat inactivated (HI). Several studies have evaluated the effect of different UC protocols for FBS by evaluating both cells and EVs. However, less is known about the effect of HI on the cells and the released EVs. The aim of this study was therefore to evaluate the effect of HI on EV purity. Methods: To determine the effect of heat inactivation, three different protocols were applied based on different combinations of: 1) UC at 118,000 × g for 18h …

Henkilöstökoulutuksen arviointi osallistujan näkökulmasta : case Akatemia-henkilöstökoulutusohjelma

2017

Tässä pro gradu -tutkielmassa tarkastellaan henkilöstökoulutuksen arviointia osallistujan näkökulmasta. Tutkielman tavoitteena on avata henkilöstön kehittämisen ja henkilöstökoulutuksen aihekenttää sekä kartoittaa tekijät, joiden avulla osallistuja arvioi suorittamaansa henkilöstökoulutusta. Tutkimusongelmaa lähestytään kirjallisuuskatsauksen ja laadullisen tapaustutkimuksen keinoin. Tutkimustapauksena toimii eräässä IT-alan yrityksessä toteutettu Akatemia nimellä kulkeva henkilöstökoulutusohjelma, johon osallistuneiden arvioinnissa käyttämiä tekijöitä empiirisellä haastattelututkimuksella kartoitetaan. Tutkimuksen ohjaavana teoriana toimii Kirkpatrickin Neljän tason –koulutuksen arviointim…

The binding of intravenous and oral biliary contrast agents to human and bovine serum albumin

1978

The binding of two homologous series of oral and intravenous biliary contrast agents to human and bovine serum albumin was investigated using the gel filtration technique. All intravenous compounds are bound to human serum albumin via one high affinity and several low affinity binding sites. Within the concentration range investigated, about 3--5 high affinity binding sites for the oral compounds were found on human serum albumin. In general, the intravenous compounds have a greater affinity for human serum albumin than the oral compounds. No significant differences were found for the binding of the oral compounds to human or bovine serum albumin, while the intravenous compounds have a high…

Higher education teachers' descriptions of their own learning : large scale study of Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences

2016

In this large-scale study, higher education teachers’ descriptions of their own learning were examined with qualitative analysis involving application of principles of phenomenographic research. This study is unique: it is unusual to use large-scale data in qualitative studies. The data were collected through an e-mail survey sent to 5960 teachers at universities of applied sciences in Finland. The number of respondents was 1622. Four hierarchically structured categories of learning were found: individual learning, collegial learning, team learning and innovative partnership learning. The role of teachers in higher education demands innovative partnership learning: being active at the socie…

Monitoring soil volume wetness in heterogeneous soils by electrical resistivity. A field-based pedotransfer function.: A field-based pedotransfer fun…

2014

11 pages; International audience; Modern irrigation techniques require accurate, rapid, cost-effective, spatial measurement of soil moisture. Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) meets most of these requirements, but needs to be calibrated for each use because it is very sensitive to differences in soil characteristics. In this study, a pedotransfer function approach is used to remove the need for site-specific calibration, allowing ERT to be used directly to measure soil moisture. The study site was a hillslope vineyard, where eight calcaric-cambisol soil profiles were identified. From 2012 to 2013, 23 000 soil volume wetness measurements were acquired by Time Domain Reflectometry, and …

Uptake of endocytic markers by rice cells: variations related to the growth phase.

2001

Endocytosis is now considered a basic cellular process common to plant cells. Although both non-specific and receptor-mediated endocytosis appear to take place in plant cells, the physiological role of the latter remains unclear. We have investigated the endocytic process in rice cell suspensions using two biotinylated proteins, peroxidase and bovine serum albumin (bHRP and bBSA), as markers. First, we show that markers are internalized by rice cells and appear in intracellular membranes. The uptake of the two markers is temperature dependent, saturable with time and markers dose and it is competed by free biotin. Thus, it shows the properties of a receptor-mediated process. We also show th…
