Detection of canine parvovirus antigens with antibodies to synthetic peptides

1996

Antibodies produced in rabbits against an 18-amino acid peptide (peptide 1, NSLPQSEGATNFGDIGVP) of capsid protein VP2/residues 292-309 of canine parvovirus (CPV) or against an 18-amino acid peptide (peptide 2, GKRNTVLFHGPASTKGKS) of nonstructural protein NS1/residues 391-409 of CPV identified, in immunofluorescence analysis, viral antigens in canine A 72 cells infected with CPV. Antibodies to peptide 2 also identified viral antigens in bovine cells infected with bovine parvovirus. In western blot analysis, antibodies to peptide 1 and peptide 2 also detected viral antigens derived from blue fox parvovirus, feline parvovirus, mink enteritis virus and raccoon dog parvovirus. The peptide antibo…

Confocal laser endoscopy for diagnosing intraepithelial neoplasias and colorectal cancer in vivo

2004

Background & Aims: Aconfocal laser endoscopy system has recently been developed that may allow subsurface imaging of living cells in colonic tissue in vivo. The aim of the present study was to assess its potential for prediction of histology during screening colonoscopy for colorectal cancer. Methods: Twenty-seven patients underwent colonoscopy with the confocal endoscope using acriflavine hydrochloride or fluorescein sodium with blue laser illumination. Furthermore, 42 patients underwent colonoscopy with this system using fluorescein sodium. Standardized locations and circumscript lesions were examined by confocal imaging before taking biopsy specimens. Confocal images were graded accordin…

Confocal laser endomicroscopy.

2005

A miniaturized confocal microscope was developed that could be integrated in the distal tip of a conventional colonoscope. With this technique, denoted confocal endomicroscopy, subsurface analysis of the gut mucosa and in-vivo histology during ongoing endoscopy are possible in full resolution by point scanning laser analysis. The diagnostic spectrum of confocal endomicroscopy is expanding from screening and surveillance for colorectal cancer to Barrett's esophagus, Helicobacter pylori-associated gastritis, and gastric cancer. The new detailed images seen with confocal laser endomicroscopy allow a unique look on cellular structures at and below the surface of the gut. This review describes t…

Characterization of a Computerized Assay for Rapid and Easy Determination of Leukocyte Adhesion to Endothelial Cells

2005

We report on a facile and rapid computerized in-vitro assay for the quantification of leukocyte adhesion to endothelial cells under static conditions using bovine polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) or human leukaemic Mono Mac 6 cells (MM6) and bovine aorta endothelial cells (BAEC). Images of leukocytes adherent to BAEC monolayers grown in microtiter plates were obtained by a digital camera attached to a conventional microscope and transferred to the public domain NIH ImageJ program for analysis. Using individually adapted program routines adherent leukocytes are easily discriminated and reproducibly quantified. The results obtained with our assay correspond to previous findings and demonst…

Enzymatic cross-linking of pea proteins to produce microparticles : application to the encapsulation of riboflavin

2015

In this work, pea proteins behavior toward enzymatic gelation by microbial transglutaminase (MTGase) was studied at native state and after denaturation (chemical reduction or thermal denaturation). The final application was the formation of protein microparticules to encapsulate riboflavin, chosen as hydrophilic active molecule model. The extraction process of the pea protein fractions has been optimized in such a way to minimize as possible protein denaturation and recover native fractions rich in albumin (Alb) and globulin (Glob) or a mixture of both. The setting up of the enzymatic reaction monitoring methods has brought out their complementarity as well as their limits. Two new monitorin…

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease: facts and uncertainties underlying the causal link between animal and human diseases

2004

Following an outbreak of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in dairy cows in the United Kingdom (UK), 153 definite and probable human cases of new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (nvCJD) have been reported, almost exclusively in the UK. Although exposure to the BSE agent is the most plausible interpretation for the occurrence of nvCJD, the causal link between the BSE prion and nvCJD is still debated. This review discusses the pros and cons of nvCJD as a separate nosographic entity, the scientific basis for a correlation between BSE and nvCJD, the validity of the current diagnostic criteria for CJD and nvCJD, the contribution of epidemiology to the detection of a causal relation betwee…

Liian hieno Pepiksi : esikoululaiset kertovat käsityksistään lastenkirjojen kuvahahmoista

2015

Tutkimus tarkastelee lastenkirjojen kuvahahmoja esikouluikäisten lasten kertomana. Tutkimus on luonteeltaan laadull…

Eclogite xenoliths from Kimberley, South Africa — A case study of mantle metasomatism in eclogites

2009

Abstract Eclogite xenoliths from the Kimberley diamond mine dumps were studied for major, trace elements and oxygen isotopes. The suite consists of typical garnet and clinopyroxene rocks as well as kyanite-eclogites and olivine- or orthopyroxene-bearing samples. All samples have Al[6]/Al[4] ratios > 2 which indicate high equilibration pressures, i.e. in the eclogite stability field as opposed to pyroxenites. Most samples are modally and cryptically metasomatized and contain up to 10 vol.% phlogopite plus ilmenite and rutile. Trace element geochemical characteristics of phlogopite and Ti-oxides are similar to those described for metasomatized peridotite xenoliths from the Kaapvaal craton, an…

Zirconolite-bearing ultra-potassic veins in a mantle-xenolith from Mt. Melbourne Volcanic Field, Victoria Land, Antarctica

1991

One mantle xenolith from a basanite host of the Mt. Melbourne Volcanic Field (Ross Sea Rift) is extraordinary in containing veins filled with leucite, plagioclase, clinopyroxene, nepheline, Mg-ilmenite, apatite, titaniferous mica, and the rare mineral zirconolite. These veins show extensive reaction with the dunitic or lherzolitic host (olivine+spinel+orthopyroxene+clinopyroxene). The reaction areas contain skeletal olivine and diopside crystals, plagioclase, phlogopite, aluminous spinel and ilmenite in a fine grained groundmass of aluminous spinel, clinopyroxene, olivine, plagioclase and interstitial leucite. The vein composition estimated from modal abundances and microprobe analyses is a…

Evidence from Antarctic mantle peridotite xenoliths for changes in mineralogy, geochemistry and geothermal gradients beneath a developing rift

2006

Abstract Garnet and spinel peridotite xenoliths associated with the Phanerozoic Lambert–Amery Rift in eastern Antarctica contain evidence for several stages in the development of the mantle beneath the rift. Despite the fact that equilibria were only partly attained, a combination of petrography, whole-rock geochemistry, mineral chemistry and thermobarometry can be used to decipher four stages prior to entrainment of the xenoliths in the host magma during the initial stages of the breakup of Antarctica, India and Madagascar. The first chronological stage is represented by harzburgitic protoliths represented by rare occurrences of low-Ca olivines and orthopyroxenes in spinel lherzolites: the…
