Machiavellego rozumienie dobra i zła
2015
Niccolo Machiavelli’s way of understanding the notions of good and evil rely on his theory of the origins of communities, according to which their basic structure is build around the figures of founders. Communities are kept alive by the constant effort make by their members to take care of common good and practice of crafts of peace. Forces opposed to the founders and disarraying the social life can be described as the figures on the continuum stretched between traitors, as Brutus or Judas, and lazy-bones or cowards, parasiting on the fruits of common labor. This way of understanding the good and the evil has its roots in the age of Athenian Enlightenment – in the conception of virtue ethi…

Local Decisions Under Central Watch: A Nordic Quality Assurance System
2013
Quality assurance or accountability, as we use the term, refers to when an actor, in virtue of contractual obligations, has the right to hold another actor responsible to a set of standards, to judge whether the standards have been met and to impose sanctions if the standards are deemed unfulfilled. In this chapter, we compare how (and if) these rights have been distributed and enacted in educational administration in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. By specifying contractual obligations, we wish to separate accountability from other kinds of asymmetric power relations, such as those between parent and child, and focus on acts of delegation and control.
The assessment of multicultural strength: Design and validation of an Openness to the Other Affective Domain Inventory
2014
The classification of character strengths and virtues by Peterson and Seligman (2004) includes 24 strengths and 6 virtues. Although the development of this classification was inspired by diverse cultural traditions, no one strength or virtue centrally focused on cultural aspects. Fowers and Davidov (2006) have proposed a new multicultural strength or virtue termed as openness to the other. We developed the Openness to the Other Affective Domain Inventory (OADI), a new 6-item measurement instrument to assess affective attraction to the other, that is, fascination with or attraction to culturally diverse others, and affective aversion to the other, that is, distrust of or disgust with cultura…
Estudios sobre el liderazgo. Teorías y evaluación
2006
The present work has the objective to offer a theoretical-methodological approximation respect of the leadership’s phenomenon. By virtue of the fact that such phenomenon is understood as a complex and multiderminated construct, we will approach the different theoretical schools which have tried to explain it. Also, it is attempted to answer the question about the possibility to evaluate the mentioned construct. To answer this interrogation we will present the different methodologies employed in scientific research and their possible advantages and limitations of their application to the leadership’s evaluation.
Like a Flame: Remembering Giovanni Tranchina
2012
When, in October 2010, the Law Faculty of Palermo University celebrated 50 years of the teaching of Giovanni Tranchina on the occasion of his farewell public lecture on “The right to the service of hope,” colleagues and students presented him with a plaque: a simple, unadorned silver sheet which bore a message—engraved not only in the metal—conveying the faculty’s “inexpressible gratitude to a Master of law and life.” At the top of the plaque we had also decided to have engraved a phrase of Piero Calamandrei: a reflection on the “square boxes of procedural law,” whose study “is sterile abstraction, unless it is also the study of the living man.” It seemed that this reference to the deeper d…

‘E-TAP’ CURRICULUM FOR VIRTUE EDUCATION: A FIT ANALYSIS TO THE ‘SKOLA-2030’ CURRICULUM
2021
The virtue education curriculum ‘e-TAP’ is one of the recent efforts for improving character and virtue education at school in Latvia from preschool till grade nine. The objective of this research was to provide evidence regarding whether this curriculum is appropriate (‘fits’) to the Latvian context, in particular in reference to the Skola-2030 curriculum. Based on fit and feasibility theory, this work addressed the research question: “How does the treatment of virtues of the e-TAP curriculum fit to the treatment of virtues of the new Skola-2030 curriculum?”. The analysis used statistical descriptive frequency analysis of the virtues of each programme and comparative analysis between the t…

Recently, two forms of virtue-related humor, benevolent and corrective, have been introduced. Benevolent humor treats human weaknesses and wrongdoings benevolently, while corrective humor aims at correcting and bettering them. Twelve marker items for benevolent and corrective humor (the BenCor) were developed, and it was demonstrated that they fill the gap between humor as temperament and virtue. The present study investigates responses to the BenCor from 25 samples in 22 countries (overall N = 7,226). The psychometric properties of the BenCor were found to be sufficient in most of the samples, including internal consistency, unidimensionality, and factorial validity. Importantly, benevolen…
LEGITIMATION OF VIRTUE EDUCATION IN TEACHER TRAINING DISCOURSE DURING SOVIET LATVIA
2019
Soviet virtue education had a relevant place in the discourse of the founders of communism and in the Communist Party’s documents. Virtue education played a central role in the construction of the future Soviet society and the raising of the New Soviet Man, a conscious communist, productive worker and soldier. This paper addresses two research questions: how was character and virtue education conceptualized, legitimized and implemented in Soviet Latvia? What elements of the Soviet approach to character education facilitated the consolidation of totalitarianism in Latvia? This research is based on written academic sources published in Soviet Latvia about virtue education and intended to schoo…
