A HYBRID VEM/BEM NUMERICAL TECHNIQUE FOR SIMULATING DAMAGE IN COMPOSITE MATERIALS

2021

Composite materials are nowadays widely used in the aerospace sector both for primary and secondary structures for their high mechanical properties and the ability to model them according to project needs. Therefore, accurately predicting material behaviour when subjected to operating loads is extremely important in making the design process more efficient. For this purpose, computational approaches based on continuum damage mechanics have been largely used to study the progressive loss of material integrity due to the propagation and coalescence of microscopic defects. In this contribution, a recently developed hybrid computational technique, which combines the Virtual Element Method (VEM)…

Coupling BEM and VEM for the Analysis of Composite Materials with Damage

2021

Numerical tools which are able to predict and explain the initiation and propagation of damage at the microscopic level in heterogeneous materials are of high interest for the analysis and design of modern materials. In this contribution, we report the application of a recently developed numerical scheme based on the coupling between the Virtual Element Method (VEM) and the Boundary Element Method (BEM) within the framework of continuum damage mechanics (CDM) to analyze the progressive loss of material integrity in heterogeneous materials with complex microstructures. VEM is a novel numerical technique that, allowing the use of general polygonal mesh elements, assures conspicuous simplific…

Stress gradient versus strain gradient constitutive models within elasticity

2014

Abstract A stress gradient elasticity theory is developed which is based on the Eringen method to address nonlocal elasticity by means of differential equations. By suitable thermodynamics arguments (involving the free enthalpy instead of the free internal energy), the restrictions on the related constitutive equations are determined, which include the well-known Eringen stress gradient constitutive equations, as well as the associated (so far uncertain) boundary conditions. The proposed theory exhibits complementary characters with respect to the analogous strain gradient elasticity theory. The associated boundary-value problem is shown to admit a unique solution characterized by a Helling…

A COLLABORATIVE VIRTUAL REALITY ENVIRONMENT FOR NEUROSURGICAL PLANNING AND TRAINING

2007

OBJECTIVE We have developed a highly interactive virtual environment that enables collaborative examination of stereoscopic three-dimensional (3-D) medical imaging data for planning, discussing, or teaching neurosurgical approaches and strategies. MATERIALS AND METHODS The system consists of an interactive console with which the user manipulates 3-D data using hand-held and tracked devices within a 3-D virtual workspace and a stereoscopic projection system. The projection system displays the 3-D data on a large screen while the user is working with it. This setup allows users to interact intuitively with complex 3-D data while sharing this information with a larger audience. RESULTS We have…

Simulation and visualization of thermal metaphors in a virtual environment for thermal building assessment

2014

International audience; The current application of the design process through energy efficiency in virtual reality (VR) systems is limited mostly to building performance predictions and design review, as the issue of the data formats and the workflow used for 3D modeling, thermal calculation and VR visualization. The importance of energy efficiency and integration of advances in building design and VR technology have lead this research to focus on thermal simulation results visualized in a virtual environment to optimize building design, particularly concerning heritage buildings. The emphasis is on the perception of thermal data of a room simulated in a virtual environment (VE) in order to…

Remembered, Read and Experienced Time in Virtual Text (= Tempo lembrado, lido e experienciado no texto virtual)

2015

In this article I will scrutinize Screen (2002, by WARDRIP-FRUIN & al.), a literary work set and experienced in a CAVE Virtual Reality environment, especially from the perspective of its temporal aspects. There are obvious themes of remembering, forgetting and textually constructing the past in this work, but most notably, Screen emphasizes the temporality of the reading act itself. I will analyze this highly special work in relation to the remembered, read, and bodily experienced time, and thus, attempt to better understand both the notion of fictive time and the temporality of fiction. peerReviewed

Comparing molecular dynamics-derived pharmacophore models with docking: A study on CDK-2 inhibitors

2020

Abstract We compared the performance of molecular dynamics (MD)-derived pharmacophore modeling approaches, Common Hit Approach (CHA), and the Molecular dYnamics SHAred PharmacophorE (MYSHAPE) approach, with semi-flexible constrained/unconstrained docking. The aim of this work is to enrich the hit-list of a virtual screening on CDK-2 known inhibitors as a case study. Cyclin-dependent kinases (CDKs) deregulation is associated with cancer growth. CDKs are an attractive target for anticancer agents. MD-derived pharmacophore models have been obtained with LigandScout 4.2.1. Docking analysis has been performed through Glide 7.6. The results highlighted the MYSHAPE approach has a better performanc…

Transverse-momentum-dependent Multiplicities of Charged Hadrons in Muon-Deuteron Deep Inelastic Scattering

2017

A semi-inclusive measurement of charged hadron multiplicities in deep inelastic muon scattering off an isoscalar target was performed using data collected by the COMPASS Collaboration at CERN. The following kinematic domain is covered by the data: photon virtuality $Q^{2}>1$ (GeV/$c$)$^2$, invariant mass of the hadronic system $W > 5$ GeV/$c^2$, Bjorken scaling variable in the range $0.003 < x < 0.4$, fraction of the virtual photon energy carried by the hadron in the range $0.2 < z < 0.8$, square of the hadron transverse momentum with respect to the virtual photon direction in the range 0.02 (GeV/$c)^2 < P_{\rm{hT}}^{2} < 3$ (GeV/$c$)$^2$. The multiplicities are pres…

Organizational Virtues, Performance and Job Satisfaction. Differences according individual and organizational factors in Argentinean employees

2017
