Chaoskampf in the orthodox baptism ritual

2018

The present article analyses the occurrence of the Chaoskampf motif in the Orthodox Baptism ritual and its biblical and Near-Eastern backgrounds. Such statements are direct references to Old and New Testament texts in which water has negative connotations, being associated with hostile or chaotic aspects of existence. In the baptismal interpretation of the biblical motif, sea, depths and dragons are figurative names for demons. The liturgical reinterpretation of these biblical references is the preamble of the baptismal exorcisms. Biblical texts about the struggle against chaos were included in the ritual in order to illustrate Christ's supremacy over all hostile forces subduing man before …

”Twixt Land and Sea” in Conrad's Youth: a Narrative and Two Other stories...

2017

The article aims at discussing the interdependence of the marine and the land spaces in Conrad’s works. Although they serve the same purpose—they constitute the background, and set the scene for Conrad’s tales, the marine space works quite frequently as a catalyst for human actions. The Youth: A Narrative and Two Other Stories volume is analysed in order to present the image of land and sea as created by the writer. Moreover, the voyage, the element joining the tales, will be considered from the perspective suggested by Juliet McLauchlan in her inspiring article Conrad’s ‘Three Ages of Man’: The ‘Youth’ Volume.

La música o el 27

2020

Humility: Virgin or Virtue?

2021

GV/2021/123 This paper considers Marian iconography in which …

The Learned and the Common People. Two Traditions in the Latvian Mythology

2014

The present article follows the formation of a view on the Latvian mythology, distinctly different from the one that can be drawn from the analysis of the folklore texts. It can be concluded that the cause for this discrepancy is the attitude of the learned men authoring the different texts describing the mythology of the local people in more or less detail. They relied basically on writings of other authors instead of the living tradition itself, as any folkloristic or anthropological approach was yet the matter of far future. By repeating the data found in other written works, this information appears to be widely known and completely reliable. The ultimate collection of all the data is t…

Collaborative Virtual Reality for Laparoscopic Liver Surgery Training

2019

Virtual reality (VR) has been used in many medical training systems for surgical procedures. However, the current systems are limited due to inadequate interactions, restricted possibilities of patient data visualization, and collaboration. We propose a collaborative VR system for laparoscopic liver surgical planning and simulation. Medical image data is used for model visualization and manipulation. Additionally, laparoscopic surgical joysticks are used to provide an opportunity for a camera assistant to cooperate with an experienced surgeon in VR. Continuous clinical feedback led us to optimize the visualization, synchronization, and interactions of the system. Laparoscopic surgeons were …

A collaborative virtual reality environment for liver surgery planning

2021

Abstract Surgical planning software is a key component in the treatment of tumor diseases. However, desktop-based systems provide only limited visualization and interaction opportunities. Moreover, collaborative planning among members of a surgical team is only possible to a limited extent. In this work, a collaborative virtual reality (VR) environment to assist liver surgeons in tumor surgery planning is presented. Our aim is to improve virtual resection planning between surgeons in a remote or co-located environment. The system allows surgeons to define and adjust virtual resections on patient-specific organ 3D surfaces and 2D image slices. Changes on both modalities are synchronized, whi…

Collaborative VR for Liver Surgery Planning using Wearable Data Gloves: An Interactive Demonstration

2021

Preoperative planning for liver surgery is a critical procedure to assess a potential resection and it supports surgeons to define the affected vessels and resection volume. Traditional surgical planning systems are widely used to support the planning with the usage of desktop-based 3D and 2D visualizations. However, desktop-based systems offer limited interactions and visualizations compared to virtual reality (VR) [3]. A suitable technique to support collaboration among surgeons is required. Our previous works [1], [2] illustrate that using collaborative VR is essential to enhance communication, teamwork, and over-distance collaboration. In this work, we present a collaborative VR prototy…

Probabilistic analysis of non-local random media

2008

Computational stochastic methods have been devoted over the last years to analysis and quantification of the mechanical response of engineering systems involving random media. Specifically analysis of random, heterogeneous media is getting more and more important with the emergence of new complex materials requiring reliable methods to provide accurate probabilistic response. Advanced materials, often used at nano or meso-levels possess strong non-local characters showing that long-range forces between non-adjacent volume elements play an important role in mechanical response. Moreover long and short-range molecular interactions may have random nature due to unpredictable fabrication proces…
