Virtues for the Anthropocene

2015

The paper discusses some difficulties that life in Anthropocene poses to our ethical thinking. It describes the sort of ethical task that individuals find themselves confronting when dealing with the planetary environmental quandaries that characterise the new epoch. It then asks what, given the situation, would count as environmentally virtuous ways of looking at and going about our lives, and how relevant virtues can be developed. It is argued that the practice of gardening is distinctively conducive to that objective. Finally, some garden virtues that will be of special importance in the Anthropocene, but have so far been largely neglected by environmental ethicists, are listed and descr…

El doble rechazo de la reflexión en Ser y tiempo

2021

The objective of this article is to clarify the Heideggerian rejection of the idea of reflection as the method of philosophy. The need for such explanation lies on the counterintuitive nature of this philosophical thesis and on the interpretive problems that this criticism presents in Being and Time. In order to solve them, a brief historical-conceptual examination of the reflection is realized, leading to two different meanings of the concept, a psychological and a transcendental one. Thanks to this distinction, it is possible to expose systematically the double criticism presented in Being and time and, therefore, clarify the ultimate reasons underling the Heideggerian rejection of the …

Éste fue el punto de partida para fundamentar su conocida pragmática universal.PALABRAS CLAVEGADAMER, HERMENÉUTICA, CRÍTICA, HABERMAS, LENGUAJEABSTRACTIn this article we briefly examine the main features of Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics, revealing the pragmatic importance of concepts like arché, mythos or dihairesis. De Günther Anders al transhumanismo: la obsolescencia del ser humano y la mejora moral

2020

This paper critically compares the philosophy of Gunther Anders and the contemporary transhumanists, like Julian Savulescu, Ingmar Persson, or Thomas Douglas. The Andersian concepts of moral blindness, promethean gap, and promethean shame will be discussed in order to understand human beings’ outdatedness; parallel to this, we will also expose the transhumanist analysis on the unfitness of human beings in evolutive and cognitive terms. We will show that much of the transhumanist analysis is a reformulation of the Andersian thesis, now under scientific terminology. Finally, we will approach the transhumanist proposal of moral enhancement, explaining and confronting some critics raised on the…

In this paper I concentrate on the fact of arguing in Karl-Otto Apel, to try to understand, according to this author, what it is, why it is so important for the foundation of ethics and what it means to argue rationally. From there I walk with Apel beyond Apel showing t…

Two-point functions with an invariant Planck scale and thermal effects

2008

Nonlinear deformations of relativistic symmetries at the Planck scale are usually addressed in terms of modified dispersion relations. We explore here an alternative route by directly deforming the two-point functions of an underlying field theory. The proposed deformations depend on a length parameter (Planck length) and preserve the basic symmetries of the corresponding theory. We also study the physical consequences implied by these modifications at the Planck scale by analyzing the response function of an accelerated detector in Minkowski space, an inertial one in de Sitter space, and also in a black hole spacetime.
