Huntington and the liberal thought. Problems of Anglo-democracy to understand politics
2013
The liberal thought has inspired philosophy and sociology during years. From its view, US has two main goals. One is to expand the civilized culture to other non-western countries, and second to grant the democratic values. Paradoxically, terrorism poses one of the most troubling aspects of contemporanean democracy. On one hand, not only it defies the democratic resources to anticipate the next blow, but also put US to conduct one-sided attacks to autonomous countries. To legitimize the expansion of this new imperial order, the liberal discourse appealed to two strategies: first and foremost, denoting pejoratively as the case of Latin America that there is a cultural matrix that impedes the…
The Serial Character of Abolition: Charting Transatlantic and Gendered Critiques of Slavery in The Liberty Bell
2019
This chapter discusses the editorial work of the female abolitionist Maria Weston Chapman and examines how Chapman envisions the gift book—a collection of poetry, short fiction, essays, and letters designed to be given away as present to a loved one—as a transatlantic space in which political thinkers, writers, and intellectuals could exchange their ideas. In order to enhance the dialogical endeavor of the gift book The Liberty Bell (1839–1859), Chapman makes strategic use of seriality by employing, for example, repeated iconography and cross-references that link contributions in each volume but also the individual volumes with each other. This chapter thus examines how the serial character…

“Arete-school” final report
2020
This report contains information regarding the postdoctoral project “Modernization of school education in Latvia through an innovative research-based program on 21st century competences and virtue ethics development supported by a virtual campus (ARETE-school)” (Project contract number: 1.1.1.2/ VIAA /1/16/071). The project was implemented between November 2017 and October 2020, and had a total cost of EUR 133.806 The output indicators of the project were largely reached: a new and sustainable post-doctoral position was created, 9 scientific articles and 3 research reports were published in indexed journals, a new technology, which could be commercialised, has been elaborated (the online pl…
Organització i estructuració del poder al si d'un Orde Militar: el cas de l'Orde de Montesa (segles XIV-XV)
1995
The majority of works on the history of the Military Order of Montesa are based on classic works referring to the Modern Ages and therefore they assign to the Middle Ages meaningless scherna and organizational outlines. The purpose of this paper is to find out the territorial distribution of the Montesa manors in the Kingdom of Valencia at the time of its foundation, and its changes through the Middle Ages, emphasizing the distribution of powes and competences between the Friars memberships of the Order and the Master, owner of the rights of the “Mesa Maestral". We know that during the XIV and XV Centuries there was a concentration of power in the hands of the Master. With this authority, h…
Visual legitimisation of astronomy in the sixteenth and seventeeth centuries: Atlas, Hercules and Tycho’s nose
2007
Abstract Images of the virtuous hero Hercules and the crowned King Atlas offered considerable potential for legitimising the new astronomy of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The accomplishments of Hercules, a seeker after virtue, with his exceptional learning, his role as disseminator of knowledge, his significance as an example of ideal manhood and, in addition to all, his achievement of immortality, invited comparison with the endeavours of astronomers. Throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, Hercules and Atlas appear as the spiritual authorities of the discipline, and each was called into use to symbolise both the old and the new astronomy. Both figures embodied qual…
Hugo Grotius – Individual Rights as the Core of Natural Law
2014
The Dutch humanist Hugo Grotius’ status as an important forerunner of the Enlightenment is well recognized, bolstered by his famous etiamsi daremus-dictum in the Prolegomena of De iure belli ac pacis. Less well known is that Grotius was the first central Protestant thinker to redefine the concept of ius, so that it was understood as individual or subjective rights. His understanding of ius as a personal moral quality, which he subsequently delimits as the expletive justice or perfect right to one’s own (suum), was given a pivotal role in his system of natural law. These concepts of ius and suum, which Grotius differentiates from other rationally derived moral principles, inspired John Locke…
Integration of distributed energy systems in micro-grid architecture for making a virtual power plant
2015
This paper presents a novel concept for increasing the penetration level of distributed renewable energy systems into the main electricity grid. When increasing the renewable energy penetration, it is important to implement the frequency based power delivery in distributed generators and work as traditional synchronous generators. This can be achieved by improving the power processing unit of each renewable generation units to work as active generators. But in existing grid architecture, the grid frequency is controlled as one common variable over the electricity grid. With such a method, it is difficult to use frequency based power sharing in small distributed generators and participate in…
Our Progress Towards Virtue
2015
This chapter is about how we can improve our rational abilities, i.e. make progress towards virtue. I first show that, according to Chrysippus, the natural properties of children are usually corrupted in three ways when they grow up and that adults therefore can make progress only by solving their inner conflicts, becoming more steadfast in their practical reasoning, and improving their self-understanding. So I argue that the main remedy against corruption is to study philosophy. I detail how we can acquire a better self-understanding by studying physics and how we can cure the mind of its inconsistencies by studying logic. I also argue that ethics prepares the mind for an active life in wh…
