Elogio delle virtù nell’immagine politica di Giuliano in Libanio
2014
Libanius’ Julianic orations play an important role to move closer to knowledge of the interior portrait of this emperor. Julian’s personality is based on four virtues: philoponia, phronesis, philanthropia, sophrosyne. These virtues are panegyrical topoi in the eulogy of the rulers (Basilikos logos), and in the Libanian context they are freely reused, adapted to the present in order to return an image of Julian politically useful; all this doesn’t necessarily imply systematic distortion of the truth. In this connection, Julian’s political image is the exact opposite of the image of his predecessor: the reader is given the conviction that Constance, unlike Julian, would have achieved only a s…

How perceived changes in the ethical culture of organizations influence the well-being of managers: A two-year longitudinal study.
2015
The first aim of this study was to identify long-term patterns of ethical organizational culture based on the perceptions of 368 Finnish managers over a period of two years. The second aim was to investigate whether there is a difference in the long-term occupational well-being (burnout and work engagement) of managers exhibiting different patterns of ethical culture. Based on latent profile analysis, five different patterns of the strength of ethical culture were identified: moderate, high, increasing, decreasing, and low. The results show that managers exhibiting either the low or decreasing pattern of ethical culture experienced significant changes in their well-being over time. Decreasi…
Virtues for the Anthropocene
2015
The paper discusses some difficulties that life in Anthropocene poses to our ethical thinking. It describes the sort of ethical task that individuals find themselves confronting when dealing with the planetary environmental quandaries that characterise the new epoch. It then asks what, given the situation, would count as environmentally virtuous ways of looking at and going about our lives, and how relevant virtues can be developed. It is argued that the practice of gardening is distinctively conducive to that objective. Finally, some garden virtues that will be of special importance in the Anthropocene, but have so far been largely neglected by environmental ethicists, are listed and descr…
Philosophical thought of the School of the Sextii
2014
Around the first half century B.C. the first Roman school of philosophy arose, which was called School of Sextii. The known members of the School were: Quintus Sextius the Elder, founding father of the School, Sextius Niger, Quintus' son, who became scholarch of the School after his father's death, Sotion, Papirius Fabianus (both teachers of Seneca the Younger), Crassicius Pasicles, a grammarian, and Celsius Cornelius, an expert doctor. The School followed the footsteps of the Hellenistic schools, and similar to these, the pursuit of happiness was its purpose. The school of the Sextii had taken to heart that part of the philosophy called physical, characterizing itself mainly as a philosoph…
Dignity, Rights and Virtues in the Department of Values
2018
The chapter aims to show that dignity is not an empty concept but it adds something to other values and this is reflected in Dworkin holistic approach to values. Last Dworkin's project is to transcend the language of rights to a new political perspective in which responsibility and virtues are crucial. But this is problematic for Dworkin's engagement to liberalism.
Interpretazione del diritto internazionale e rule of law
2020
The article discusses two main theses. The first one is the presence and forms of the rule of law in the international legal scenario. This task is developed through the analysis of three possible versions: the extension of the domestic rule of law to the obligations coming from international law, the rule of international law, and the international rule of law. The second thesis is that the rule of law plays a role in the interpretation of law. This role depends on legal science, considered the crucial resource of an international law of international lawyers. The final point regards then the relationships between international rule of law and legal science, and, in particular, the answeri…
