Global Performance Management for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (GPM-SME)

2006

This paper refers to the project GPM-SME — FP6-005857i, included within the 6th Framework Programme of the European Commission, in its CRAFT Programme. The goal of this document is to present the main concepts of Global Performance Management and how the GPM-SME consortium pursues to develop a framework to improve the competitive capability of companies and their network visibility, specially developed for Small and Medium sized Enterprises. This main aim will be achieved in two ways: allowing companies to include Innovation potential in their performance management, and defining new ways to share information among companies in Collaborative Networks(CN) and measuring the capabilities of Vi…

Visualising political thinking on the screen : a dialogue between von Trotta’s Hannah Arendt and its protagonist

2016

This article analyses Margarethe von Trotta’s film Hannah Arendt: The Woman Who Saw Banality in Evil through its protagonist’s own writings on visual culture, visibility and invisibility in the context of political thinking. We start by clarifying Arendt’s understanding of political theory as an activity aiming to provoke thinking. We then discuss systematically the visual language of the film and offer a typology of its representations of political thinking, subdivided into a part on internalisation and one on externalisation (dialogue). We emphasise von Trotta’s reliance on a negative approach, i.e. the representation of thinking through the absence of any other activity while thinking, c…

Challenges for Creating Visibility of European Cultural Heritage

2019

The European Heritage Label (EHL) is a recent flagship heritage action of the European Union and focuses on the European dimension of Europe’s histo- ry and heritage as part of the Union’s cultural policy. One of the central con- cerns of the EU’s cultural policy is to generate a sense of belonging and iden- tity among European citizens. While efficient promotion of the visibility of the EHL among European audiences could be expected corresponding to the political objectives, the EHL continues to struggle with broader public recog- nition. Based on fieldwork findings, the article discusses the visibility of the EHL action as a network of heritage sites that challenges n…

Arsenical Pesticides in Early Francoist Spain: Fascism, Autarky, Agricultural Engineers and the Invisibility of Toxic Risks

2019

Abstract Lead arsenate was introduced on a massive scale in agriculture in Spain in the early 1940s. With the support of a network of agricultural engineers, the new Francoist state encouraged the production and use of lead arsenate as the main weapon against a newly arrived pest, the Colorado potato beetle. In this paper I discuss arsenical pesticides as sociotechnological products which played a pivotal role in the joint production of both chemical-based agriculture and the emerging Francoist regime in Spain during the 1940s. I review the campaigns organized by agriculture engineers and the making of the new National Register for Phytosanitary Products in 1942. The new regulations promote…

Combining Haar Wavelet and Karhunen Loeve Transforms for Medical Images Watermarking

2014

This paper presents a novel watermarking method, applied to the medical imaging domain, used to embed the patient’s data into the corresponding image or set of images used for the diagnosis. The main objective behind the proposed technique is to perform the watermarking of the medical images in such a way that the three main attributes of the hidden information (i.e., imperceptibility, robustness, and integration rate) can be jointly ameliorated as much as possible. These attributes determine the effectiveness of the watermark, resistance to external attacks, and increase the integration rate. In order to improve the robustness, a combination of the characteristics of Discrete Wavelet and K…

High-contrast white-light Lau fringes

2004

We present a new optical assembly with which to achieve Lau fringes with totally incoherent illumination. Gratinglike codification of the spatially incoherent source combined with an achromatic Fresnel diffraction setup allows us to achieve Lau fringe-pattern visibility of almost 100% with broadband light. The white-light character to our proposed setup is in stark contrast to previous monochromatic implementations. Potential implications of this fact are identified.

Uncertainty measures—Problems concerning additivity

2009

Additivity of an uncertainty measure on an MV-algebra has a clear meaning. If the divisibility is dropped, we come up to a so-called Girard algebra. There we discuss strong resp. weak additivity based on so-called divisible disjoint unions resp. on additivity for all sub-MV-algebras. We obtain a description of those extensions from additive measures on an MV-algebra to the canonical Girard algebra extension of pairs which are strongly additive and valuation measures. Finally, we prove the non-existence of strongly additive measure extensions, if the underlying MV-algebra is a finite chain with more than two non-trivial elements.

Driving factors for having visibility of sustainability contents in university degree titles

2020

Abstract Given the increasing concern about sustainability issues in society, graduates and postgraduates going into the labour market benefit from the inclusion of sustainability contents in university studies. Visibility of these contents is gained towards a potential employer if they are explicitly mentioned in the university degree title. This is the first paper to explore this trend. More precisely, the purpose of this study is to find explanatory causal combinations of factors for this trend in the Spanish setting. The methodological approach of this paper is based on fuzzy sets. More precisely, it follows fuzzy-sets Qualitative Comparative Analysis, which is an innovative approach in…

Lumevis ™: a new medical device to prepare patients for esophagogastroduodenoscopy. Experimental clinical study.

2020

Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGDS) is the gold standard exam for upper gastrointestinal diseases. EGDS is very important in Early Gastric Cancer diagnosis and treatment but it is an operator-dependent exam and there are lots of factors that reduce its visibility (mucus, bubbles and foam). The aim of our study is to evaluate if the use of Lumevis™ improves mucosa visualization during EGDS without increasing the examination time and complications' rate and comparing the differences in patients prepared with water or no intervention.we recruited 50 patients from 01/08/2020 to 31/08/2020 who came to our observation for epigastric pain, dyspepsia and gastroesophageal reflux (GERD). For each patien…
