Visual inference of arm movement is constrained by motor representations

International audience; Several studies support the idea that motion inference is strongly motor dependent. In the present study, we address the role of biomechanical constraints in motion prediction and how this implicit knowledge can interfere in a spatial prediction task. Right-handed (RHS) and left-handed subjects (LHS) had to estimate the final position of a horizontal arm movement in which the final part of the trajectory was hidden. Proliferative Activity and Cytometric Characteristics in Polyps of the Nasal Cavity and Paranasal Sinuses

Although several investigations have revealed the influence of cytokines, allergy, and environmental factors in polyp development, the etiology of nasal polyps is still unknown. To estimate the biology of this common disease the operative specimens of 50 patients who underwent surgery for polyps of the nasal cavity and the paranasal sinuses were examined; of these, 10 patients had recurrent disease and 23 patients had an allergy. Visual quality comparison of conventional and Hole-Visian implantable collamer lens at different degrees of decentering

Purpose To compare the visual quality of implantable collamer lens (ICL) with and without central hole (Hole ICL and conventional ICL) at different degrees of decentering. Methods An adaptive optics visual simulator (crx1, Imagine Eyes, Orsay, France) was used to simulate the –3, –6 and –12 dioptres (D) conventional and Hole ICLs in three conditions: centred and decentred 0.3 and 0.6 mm. Visual acuity (VA) at high-contrast, medium-contrast and low-contrast and contrast sensitivity (CS) were measured in 15 observers for 3 and 4.5 mm pupils. Image quality and visual performance in the peripheral visual field following photorefractive keratectomy.

ABSTRACT PURPOSE: A theoretical and experimental study was performed to assess the possible effects of photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) on retinal image quality and thresholds in the peripheral visual field. METHODS: Simple optical calculations suggest that although the quality of the retinal image at the fovea of the postoperative PRK eye may be comparable to that in an emmetropic eye, images in the peripheral field may be markedly worse, since peripheral ray bundles may pass partly through ablated and partly through unablated cornea, giving a simultaneous-vision bifocal effect. Cellular ultrastructure of the ruptured anterior cruciate ligament. A transmission electron microscopic and immunohistochemical study in 55 cases.

To evaluate the cellular ultrastructure following injury, we examined the anterior cruciate ligaments in 55 patients with complete tears in different phases after the injury and compared them to a control group of 39 cadaver knees. Samples were analyzed by electron microscopy, immunofluorescence, and ultramorphometry. After an invasion of inflammatory cells into the stumps of the ruptured ligaments, a marked proliferation of fibroblasts was found at the end of Phase 1 (2-3 days after the ligament injury), that was even more pronounced at the beginning of Phase II (4-17 days). The influence of parental modelling on children's physical activity and screen time: Does it differ by gender?

Background: Parents play an important role in modelling healthy behaviours to their children. This study investigated associations between parent and child physical activity and screen time behaviours across specific domains, including moderating effects by parent and child gender. Risk factors for high myopia: a 22‐year follow‐up study from childhood to adulthood

PURPOSE To determine the effect of the definition of high myopia on its prevalence and risk factors for high myopia. METHODS A total of 240 myopic schoolchildren (119 boys and 121 girls) at the mean age of 10.9 years (range 8.8-12.8 years) were recruited to a randomized clinical trial of myopia treatment among children from 3rd- and 5th grades of school referred for an eye examination due to poor distant vision and having no previous spectacles. Prevalence and causes of blindness and low vision in the Casteldaccia Eye Study.

In a population-based survey performed on the middle-aged and elderly population of Casteldaccia, Sicily, we found that the prevalence of blindness was 0.47% and the prevalence of low vision 1.22%. Unilateral blindness affected 2.81% of the population and unilateral low vision 4.12%. Visual impairment was much more frequently seen in subjects aged 70 years or more than in younger persons. The main cause of visual impairment was cataract, followed by amblyopia, which was responsible for many cases of unilateral low vision.
