ABSTRACT PURPOSE: To compare the effects on contrast sensitivity of the IntraLase femtosecond laser for flap creation (IntraLASIK) and standard LASIK for myopia. METHODS: Two hundred eyes of 100 consecutive patients underwent LASIK treatment using the VISX S2 laser system. The femtosecond laser (15 kHz IntraLase) was used for flap creation in 100 eyes (50 patients) and a mechanical microkeratome (Carriazo-Barraquer) was used in 100 eyes (50 patients). In both experiments the Muller-Lyer figures were horizontally presented either in the left or in the right hemispace and movements were executed using either foveal or peripheral vision of the target. Scratches Removal in Digitised Aerial Photos Concerning Sicilian Territory

In this paper we propose a fast and effective method to detect and restore scratches in aerial photos from a photographic archive concerning Sicilian territory. Scratch removal is a typical problem for old movie films but similar defects can be seen in still images. Our solution is based on a semiautomatic detection process and an unsupervised restoration algorithm. Results are comparable with those obtained with commercial restoration tools.
A robust aerial image registration method using Gaussian mixture models

Aerial image registration is one of the bases in many aerospace applications, such as aerial reconnaissance and aerial mapping. In this paper, we propose a novel aerial image registration algorithm which is based on Gaussian mixture models. First of all, considering the characters of the aerial images, the work uses a shape feature detector which computes the boundaries of regions with nearly the same gray-value to extract invariant feature. Then, a Gaussian mixture models (GMM) based image registration model is built and solved to estimate the transformation matrix between two aerial images. Epithelial liver cells of the Chinese hamster (CHEL cells) were propagated in culture for 35 passages. At favourable cell densities, the population doubling time in normal medium, was 20 h. L-Tyrosine amino transferase activity was retained at a measurable level, but its enhancement by dexamethasone was detected solely in cells of early passages. Pyruvate kinase was strongly activated by fructose-1,6-biphosphate at low substrate concentrations. These enzymatic properties suggest that the CHEL cells are derived from a sub-population of parenchymal hepatocytes or from cells closely related to parenchymal hepatocytes. With a lag period of a few hours, CHEL cultures metabolized benzo[a]pyrene. …
