Water uptake and equilibrium sizes of aerosol particles at high relative humidities: Their dependence on the composition of the water-soluble material

Equilibrium water uptake and the sizes of atmospheric aerosol particles have for the first time been determined for high relative humidities, i.e., for humidities above 95 percent, as a function of the particles chemical composition. For that purpose a new treatment of the osmotic coefficient has been developed and experimentally confirmed. It is shown that the equilibrium water uptake and the equilibrium sizes of atmospheric aerosol particles at large relative humidities are significantly dependent on their chemical composition.

Changes of humic substances characteristics from forested to cultivated soils in Ethiopia

The dynamics of the stable fractions of soil organic matter (SOM), the humic substances, has been rarely studied in tropical soils. We evaluated extraction yields, elemental composition, isotopic d 13 C abundance and solid-state 13 C NMR spectra of humic fractions isolated from five forested and cultivated soils in Ethiopia in order to assess the influence of deforestation and subsequent cultivation on the composition of humic fractions. The bioavailability of trace elements in infant formulas is affected by different physiological and dietetic factors. In vitro methods based on element dialyzability have been proposed to estimate the bioavailability. Infant formulas of the same type but from different manufacturers can differ in the salt used for supplementation and in the contents of other components that can affect mineral bioavailability. Influence of Initial Water Content on the Wettability of Autoclaved Soils

Autoclaving is a commonly used practice to destroy microbial activity in soils but is thought to have a limited effect on other soil properties. Small changes in chemical composition have been reported, but there have been no previous reports of any alteration of physical properties. This study, however, showed that autoclaving can cause a major change in soil hydraulic properties. For samples with intermediate water contents (10-35% v/v), it caused severe or extreme water repellency in three of four soil types tested, although no effect for initially low or high water contents was found. Determination of the composition of isomeric mixtures of allylstannanes by means of 119Sn and 13C NMR measurements

Abstract Allylstannanes of the type Bun3Sn(C3H3) ((C3H3 = allenyl and propargyl) Me3Sn(C4H7), Bun3Sn(C4H7), Ph3Sn(C4H7), Me3Sn(C4H7)2 and Bun3Sn(C4H7)2 [C4H7 = (E)-but-2-enyl, (Z-but-2-enyl, and but-1-en-3-yl] were prepared via Grignard reactions as isomeric mixtures whose compositions can be directly determined by 119Sn and 13C NMR spectrometry. The 119Sn and 13C δ-values of all possible isomers together with the isomeric compositions of freshly prepared compounds and after isomerization in dry methanol under reflux are reported. The course of isomerization of some compounds in anhydrous methanol at room temperature or in the presence of Bu3SnCl was followed by 119Sn NMR spectrometry.

A preliminary approach to mineral intake in the Spanish diet established from analysis of the composition of university canteen menus

Abstract The concentration of mineral elements in complete menus has in Spain been determined in order to establish the levels of essential and toxic elements and their contribution to the maximum recommended intake. Thirteen university canteen menus obtained from the Burjassot campus, in Valencia, were analysed to establish a first approach on mineral composition in the Spanish diet. The menus were composed of a mixture of cereals, meat, fish, vegetables, fruits and dairy products. Dependence of solvent quality on the composition of copolymers: experiment and theory for solutions of P(MMA-ran-t-BMA) in toluene and in chloroform.

The interaction of toluene with P(MMA-ran-t-BMA) and with the corresponding homopolymers was determined via vapor pressure measurements at 30, 50 and 70 °C. A unified thermodynamic approach served for the modeling of the results. It is capable of describing the behavior of the different solutions by means of two adjustable parameters, one representing the effective number of solvent segments and the other accounting for the interactions between the components. Physiological Aspects of Nitrogen Fertilizer Impact on Latvian Origin Cannabis Sativa L .

The aim of the present study was to evaluate nitrogen fertilizer impact on photosynthesis and yield of hemp, applying modern non-destructive methods. The main object of the investigation – hemp cultivar of Latvian origin ‘Pūriņi’. Laboratory and field experiments showed diverse effects of different nitrogen fertilizer doses on various parameters. Additional nitrogen fertilizer dose of 60 kg ha-1 is most effective as evaluated by chlorophyll content in hemp leaves and changes of chlorophyll a fluorescence parameters. Nitrogen fertilizer negatively affected fiber content in hemp stems, therefore while cultivating hemp only for fiber production use of nitrogen fertilizer should be reduced. Acc…

Quality evaluation of extra-virgin olive oils from Sicilian genotypes grown in a high-density system

Studying the sensory profile and chemical composition of monovarietal extra-virgin olive oils (EVOOs) is important to define and manage their quality and uniqueness. Chemical and sensory traits of olive oils from 14 minor Sicilian olive genotypes in comparison with oils from six major Sicilian and three international cultivars were analysed.
