Response of soil phosphatase activities to contamination with two types of tar oil.
2018
Tar oil is a complex mixture of hydrocarbon compounds obtained from high-temperature distillation of coal tar. It has been used for over 100 years from now to protect wood and has been applied to wood products, primary utility poles, and railroad ties by pressure methods. Composition of the tar oil depends on the source and typically consists of 85% polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), 10% phenolic compounds, and 5% heterocyclic compounds. In this research, we performed the laboratory experiment to compare two types of tar oil: C and GX-Plus, and their effects on P-cycling enzymes (phosphatases) in sandy loam and loamy sand. Tar oil was applied to soil samples at the following doses: 2,…
Formulating a Revised Taxonomy for Modes of Listening
2012
Abstract Listening to sounds or music is not a homogeneous act of grasping meanings by hearing. Yet it is often portrayed as such, especially when the intentional stance of a listener is overlooked. This paper distinguishes listening as the action-oriented intentional activity of making sense of the world. It is proposed that the multifaceted and heterogeneous nature of ‘understanding by listening’ can be outlined in terms of distinct modes of listening. Building upon previous accounts, a revised taxonomy of nine listening modes (reflexive, kinaesthetic, connotative, causal, empathetic, functional, semantic, reduced and critical listening) is proposed and illustrated by examples. Modes refe…

Street art as a transforming agent of public space in Arab World. Case study of two artistic groups in Tunisia.
2023
The public space in the Arab World has historically been controlled and seized by political authorities. This appropriation has created a deep rift between citizens and public places. Nevertheless, since the beginning of the Arab revolutions, new youth art forms have emerged liberating the arts from traditional formalism and these have been transferred to open spaces making them accessible to the people. This research seeks to explore the youth street art that emerged during the Tunisian revolution, not only as an innovative artistic trend, but also as a social movement that claims a new kind of citizenship. It aims to analyze the philosophical and aesthetic purposes of street art and its r…
2018
This chapel forms part of the parochial church of Campanar, which belongs to the municipality of Valencia. The Virgen de Campanar (Virgin of Campanar) is an image executed in alabaster, discovered on the subfloor of the church of this place on February 19th, 1596, by some construction workers who were undertaking some remodeling at that time. From that moment forward it began to be worshipped by the masses as a miraculous image. Among its alleged properties we find the mysterious fact that powder from its plaster had miraculous effects: it was taken dissolved in water to cure the sick or to assure a healthy birth for pregnant women, and it even calmed storms at sea if it was thrown into the…

Costuming in Seán Keating’s self-portraits: theatrical guise or political disguise?
2018
