Art and Science in Word and Image
2019
Art and Science in Word and Image investigates the theme of ‘riddles of form’, exploring how discovery and innovation have functioned inter-dependently between art, literature and the sciences. Using the impact of evolutionary biologist D’Arcy Thompson’s On Growth and Form on Modernist practices as springboard into the theme, contributors consider engagements with mysteries of natural form in painting, photography, fiction, etc., as well as theories about cosmic forces, and other fields of knowledge and enquiry. Hence the collection also deals with topics including cultural inscriptions of gardens and landscapes, deconstructions of received history through word and image artworks and texts,…
Determining Magnetite/Maghemite Composition and Core–Shell Nanostructure from Magnetization Curve for Iron Oxide Nanoparticles
2018
Iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles produced by chemical synthesis are usually composed of both magnetite and maghemite phases. Information about the phase composition is typically obtained using Mos...
Laboratory Tests for Assessing the Reliability and Durability of Innovative Cold-Glued 3D Glass Building Subcomponents
2020
The paper shows the results of analyses of the behavior of an innovative subcomponent made of two glass shells and a plastic thermal belt interfaced with a resin-based adhesive, in order to define the plastic material–adhesive combination able to guarantee compliance with the requirements related to mechanical strength, thermoacoustic insulation, dimensional stability, material compatibility, and durability. Two different types of ultraviolet (UV)-curing adhesive were used to establish the best plastic–adhesive combination. A study of the mechanical behavior and the reliability over time of the bonded assembly was conducted by performing accelerated weathering tests and tensile tests on 30 …
Influence of the chemical dissolution of MnS inclusions on the composition of passive films and the local electrochemical behaviour of stainless stee…
2006
Abstract Immersion of stainless steel containing MnS inclusions in aqueous electrolytes leads to the chemical dissolution of these heterogeneities. Chemical dissolution of MnS inclusions in 1M NaCl, pH=3 was studied using in-situ AFM and the dissolution rate of MnS was estimated between 0.04 and 0.19 μm 3 /min. The local electrochemical measurements reveal that the chemical dissolution of MnS inclusions promotes pitting corrosion. Similary, chemical dissolution of MnS inclusions in IM NaClO 4 , pH=3 solution modified the surface close to the inclusions by the presence of FeSO 4 in the passive film.
Effect of Different Green Extraction Methods and Solvents on Bioactive Components of Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla L.) Flowers
2020
Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla L.) dried flowers contain a group of interesting biologically active compounds such as sesquiterpenes, flavonoids, coumarins, vitamins, phenolic acids and glucosides. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to characterize the composition in bioactive compounds (specialized metabolites) present in water and ethanol extracts of chamomile flowers, together with monitoring the impact of different extraction techniques (conventional vs. ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE)) on the parameters under investigation. UAE treatment significantly decreased the extraction time of bioactive compounds from herbal material. Polyphenolic compounds content and antioxidan…
Museums as disseminators of niche knowledge: Universality in accessibility for all
2019
Accessibility has faced several challenges within audiovisual translation Studies and gained great opportunities for its establishment as a methodologically and theoretically well-founded discipline. Initially conceived as a set of services and practices that provides access to audiovisual media content for persons with sensory impairment, today accessibility can be viewed as a concept involving more and more universality thanks to its contribution to the dissemination of audiovisual products on the topic of marginalisation. Against this theoretical backdrop, accessibility is scrutinised from the perspective of aesthetics of migration and minorities within the field of the visual arts in mu…
Diverse histories, common ground and a shared future:the education of career guidance and counselling professionals in the Nordic countries
2019
The development of education programmes in career guidance and counseling (CGC) has followed different paths among the various Nordic countries. Ten CGC programmes in Denmark, Finland, Greenland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden were evaluated against the NICE curricular model. The results show that all NICE core competences are represented in the curricula. However, there is greater focus in some programmes on developing competences for individual career guidance, than on developing competences for working at organisational and societal levels. Implications for the cooperation and professionalisation of CGC within the Nordic countries are discussed as well as limitations of the NICE model. Keywo…
Evaluation of Guidance Services in Higher Education in Finland
2003
The Finnish Higher Education Evaluation Council (FINHEEC) implemented an evaluation of guidance services in higher education in 2000–2001. Altogether 25 higher education institutions participated in the evaluation. This article describes the evaluation process, findings and recommendations. The aim is to show how an evaluation process can serve the development of guidance policies and practices at the institutional and national levels. Additionally, the article demonstrates the use of evaluation methodology as a means of enhancing communication between staff and students.
Diatom species composition and indices for determining the ecological status of coastal Mediterranean Spanish lakes
2013
Diatom indices have been used and tested mainly for assessing the ecological status of rivers and deep lakes, but there are scarce studies that determine their effectiveness in shallow lakes and in coastal Mediterranean lakes. This study evaluates the validity of several common diatom indices (SPI, BDI, CEC and TDIL) for the determination of the ecological quality of three coastal lakes (Valencia, Spain) and presents descriptions and ecological data of the main diatom species recorded. Diatom samples were collected from phytobenthos, both from epiphyton of the dominant submerged macrophytes and the sediment. The ecological status of the systems was determined according to different physico-…
John Blacking Revisited—Comparative Analysis of Venda Tshikone Dance (1958 and 2009)
2019
One of the first research topics of interest for folk music researchers was the stability/instability of folk tunes. Particularly the question which parts and elements in folk tunes are sensitive to change and what are the stable elements of the melodies. Researchers had data collected over several decades, which gave a great opportunity to systematically explore stability of melodies over the years and decades.
