This introductory article serves two purposes. Firstly, it provides the background for the set of 11 articles that appear in the special issue of this journal and summarizes the articles along a number of dimensions. All the articles address aspects of multilingualism as subjectively experienced and they all make use of visual methodologies. Secondly, it subjects the articles to two meta-analyses. The first one compares and contrasts the studies by site: production, image and audiencing. Visual methods are reported to have certain advantages when conducting interviews on sensitive topics, such as intimate spaces, home-related ethical issues, and vulnerable families. In this article, we concentrate on two visual methods: social network maps and life-lines. In our research project on children’s well-being and emotional security in multiple family relations, we collected data by interviewing children and asking them to complete social network maps and life-lines. A Moldvai Csángómagyar Oktatási Program kutatása és támogatása egy több éves (2016– 2021), a Finn Akadémia által támogatott projekt (projektszáma, 299133), amelynek anyaga 30 moldvai településen folyatatott, 2017–2019 között végzett terepmunkából áll. A terepmunka szakaszai során számos vizuális és digitális módszertani eljárás is bevezetésre kerül, s az ezek segítségével készített anyagokból nagy terjedelmű, multimodális adatbázis jön létre. Nykyaikaisessa vieraiden kielten opetuksessa on tavoitteena helposti ymmärrettävä puhe. Tämä tavoite on kielenopetukselle yhteinen päämäärä oppijoiden iästä tai taitotasosta riippumatta, ja se kulkee täten oppijoiden mukana halki elinikäisen kielenoppimisen. Tässä artikkelissa esitellään soveltavan kielentutkimuksen piirissä virinnyttä ymmärrettävyystutkimusta, joka helpottaa keskittämään kielenopetusta ymmärrettävyyden kannalta olennaisimpiin asioihin. Samalla tiivistetään suomen- ja ruotsinkielisten suomalaisten puhuman englannin ymmärrettävyyttä selvittäneen ICASEF-hankkeen päätulokset.
