Photography, Production Design, and Editing

2012

The formal features that have made Spanish cinema what it is and the technical processes behind them (camerawork, production design, editing) have passed through the same stages of trial and error, hurdles, crises, and conflicts as has been the case with other national cinemas. The notion of the exceptionalism of Spanish cinema is not supported by evidence, unless by “anomaly” we just mean “cultural specificity.” Cultural specificities there have been, as there are today: the highly idiosyncratic set designs of popular adaptations (of zarzuelas, of literary texts) in the 1920s; the enforced experimentation of the Civil War; the claustrophobic atmosphere of the postwar years; the prolongatio…

Primary transpupillary thermotherapy (TTT) for malignant choroidal melanoma

2002

. Purpose:  To evaluate the efficacy of transpupillary thermotherapy (TTT) as the only method of treatment for small choroidal melanoma. Patients and Methods:  In a prospective non-randomized analysis, 20 patients with primary choroidal melanoma (posterior to the equator with base ≤ 2 and thickness ≤ 4.5 mm) were treated with TTT as the only method of treatment (diode laser at 810 nm, beam diameter 3 mm, power setting 0.3–0.9 W, exposure time 20–37 min). During follow-up of at least 6 months, clinical aspects, ultrasonographic tumour thickness, fluorescein and indocyanine green angiographic patterns, visual acuity and ocular side-effects were recorded. Results:  In 17 eyes the tumour regres…

Cr(VI) sorption by intact and dehydrated Candida utilis cells in the presence of other metals

2002

This study examined the Cr(VI), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), Pb(II) sorption by intact and dehydrated Candida utilis cells. The anion [Cr2O7]2− and cation Me2+ sorption kinetics was investigated in both single- and dual-metal situations. Uptake of chromate anions occurred much more slowly singularly than with metal cations. A combination of Pb or Cu and chromate anions gave a synergistic effect for Cr(VI) sorption, but not Cd and Zn, which inhibited Cr(VI) sorption by dehydrated cells. The use of alcian blue to occupy maximum vacant adsorption sites on the cell surface unexpectedly did not influence further adsorption of Me2+. Metal uptake by C. utilis was 7 mg (135 μM) Cr, 23 mg (362 μM) Cu, 39…

A Method to Quantitatively Trap Volatilized Organoselenides for Stable Selenium Isotope Analysis

2011

If volatile organoselenides are to be analyzed for their stable Se isotope composition to elucidate sources and formation processes, organoselenides need to be trapped quantitatively to avoid artificial Se isotope fractionation. We developed an efficient trap of organoselenides to be used in microcosms designed to determine the Se isotope fractionation by microbial transformation of inorganic Se to volatile organoselenides. The recoveries of volatilized dimethyldiselenide (DMDSe) from aqueous standard solutions by activated charcoal and alkaline peroxide solution with subsequent freeze-drying and purification via a cation exchange resin were tested. Microcosm experiments with the Se-methyla…

Influence of ground tire rubber on the transient loading response of a peat biofilter

2010

Abstract The effect of using ground tire rubber (GTR) as an adsorptive material in the removal of a 2:1:1 weight mixture of n-butyl acetate, toluene and m-xylene by using a peat biofilter under different intermittent conditions was investigated. The performance of two identical size biofilters, one packed with fibrous peat alone and the other with a 3:1 (vol) fibrous peat and GTR mixture, was examined for a period of four months. Partition coefficients of both materials were measured. Values of 53, 118 and 402 L kg −1 were determined for n-butyl acetate, toluene and m-xylene in peat, respectively; and values of 40, 609 and 3035 L kg −1 were measured for the same compounds in GTR. Intermitte…

Enzymatic water extraction of taxifolin from wood sawdust of Larix gmelini (Rupr.) Rupr. and evaluation of its antioxidant activity

2011

Abstract An enzyme incubation–water extraction (EI–WE) method was developed and optimised for the extraction of the natural antioxidant taxifolin and of the total flavonoids from wood sawdust of Larix gmelini ( Rupr. ) Rupr. A factorial design and a central composite design approach were used for method optimisation. Optimal conditions were 0.5 mg/ml cellulase and 0.5 mg/ml pectinase, a pH of 5.0, a temperature of 32 °C and 18 h incubation time. The flavonoids and taxifolin were extracted in hot water at 50 °C for 30 min, with a solid to liquid ratio of 1:20. Under optimised conditions, the yields of taxifolin and total flavonoids increased from 1.06 ± 0.08 to 1.35 ± 0.04 mg/g and 4.13 ± 0.…

53 Human bio-monitoring of epoxy resins and hardeners in the production of rotor: blades

2018

Introduction In a small company producing rotor blades for aviation from carbon composites, epoxy resins based on Novolac and isophorone diamine as hardener are used. Both compounds can be absorbed via skin contact and were shown to be strong skin sensitizers. As a part of risk assessment, the industrial physician prompted a biological monitoring to determine the internal exposure of the workers. Methods 6 workers were identified with potential contact to the hardener and resin. We have collected pre- and post-shift urine samples at the beginning and mid of the work week and analysed them for the concentration of isophoronediamine and bisphenol-f-diglycidylethermetabolites as biomarker for …

A study on the essential oil of Ferulago campestris : How much does extraction method influence the oil composition?

2011

The essential oil of different parts of Ferulago campestris (Bess.) collected in Sicily has been extracted by microwave-assisted hydrodistillation (MAHD) and by classic hydrodistillation (HD). A comparative qualitative-quantitative study on the composition of the oils was carried out. A total of 100 compounds were identified in the oils obtained by MAHD, whereas 88 compounds characterized the HD oils. The most prominent components were, in all different parts of F. campestris and in both extraction methods, 2,4,5-trimethylbenzaldehyde and 2,4,6-trimethylbenzaldehyde isomers; the latter was not previously found. The attempt to evaluate where the oil components are located in all parts of the…

Suppression of pigment interference in the gas chromatographic analysis of proteinaceous binding media in paintings with EDTA.

2004

A method to suppress the interference of pigments in the analysis of proteinaceous media used in paintings is presented in this paper. This method is based on the formation of metallic ion-ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) complexes previous to the derivatisation process, using ethyl chloroformate (ECF), to transform the amino acids in N(O,S)-ethoxycarbonyl (EOC) ethyl esters. Test specimens, containing different proteinaceous media such as albumin, porcine gelatine and casein mixed with lead white, chalk, verdigris and raw Sienna have been prepared for carrying out this study. Different pH conditions have been probed for the different pigments studied. Values of peak area ratio of ami…
