Acoustic characterization of the ancient theatre at Syracuse

The ancient theatre at Syracuse, the largest open air theatre in Sicily, experienced many structural changes along its history. Today its very renowned drama festival attracts visitors from all the world that fill the entire cavea: customized seats accomodation and a prominent stage play an important role in the theatre acoustics. An air-coupled acoustical imaging method for the study of wooden panel paintings is presented. After a brief overview of the state of the art, an introduction is given regarding the production technique of the art object under investigation. The technology employed is described in detail, as well as the proposed method. After a feasibility campaign of experiments, real ancient paintings have been investigated by means of a through-transmission and a single-sided lay-out. In this case report the diagnosis of a uterine lipoleiomyoma is depicted by means of a three-dimensional radiance mode. The advent of radiance or silhouette mode as a new tool in ultrasound diagnosis is intended to assist by generating additional realistic image visualization and a better distinction among different tissues.

Specific transfer effects following variable priority dual-task training in older adults

International audience; Purpose: Past divided attention training studies in older adults have suggested that variable priority training (VPT) tends to show larger improvement than fixed priority training (FPT). However, it remains unclear whether VPT leads to larger transfer effects. Methods: In this study, eighty-three older adults aged between 55 and 65 received five 1-hour sessions of VPT, FPT or of an active placebo. Anxiety and pain perception in patients undergoing mandibular autogenous block bone surgery

Background The aim of the present study was to investigate pain perception and anxiety within the context of surgery for the placement of mandibular block bone and to evaluate the causality effect between theses variables. Material and methods A total of 13 patients were recruited for the study and were submitted to mandibular autogenous block bone surgery. Demographic data were collected and the anxiety level was determined using the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI). The STAI was administered on the day of surgery and on the 14th postoperative day. Acceleration of image filtering algorithms for 3D visualization of murine lungs using dataflow engines

Image filtering is one of the most common and important tasks in image processing applications. In this paper, image processing using a mean filtering algorithm combined with thresholding and binarization algorithms for the 3D visualization and analysis of murine lungs is explained. These algorithms are then mapped on the Maxler's MAX2336B Dataflow Engine (DFE) to significantly increase calculation speed. Several different DFE configurations were tested and each yielded different performance characteristics. Optimal algorithm calculation speed was up to 30 fold baseline calculation speed.
Visualizing Time Series State Changes with Prototype Based Clustering

Modern process and condition monitoring systems produce a huge amount of data which is hard to analyze manually. Previous analyzing techniques disregard time information and concentrate only for the indentification of normal and abnormal operational states. We present a new method for visualizing operational states and overall order of the transitions between them. This method is implemented to a visualization tool which helps the user to see the overall development of operational states allowing to find causes for abnormal behaviour. In the end visualization tool is tested in practice with real time series data collected from gear unit.
Cure behaviour of epoxy resin matrices for carbon fibre composites

The cure behaviour of two resin formulations (with high and low curing agent content respectively) of an epoxy resin system, used as matrix for carbon fibre composites, was studied through calorimetric analysis. The aim of this work is to investigate the kinetics of this specific epoxy system in order to be able to choose a proper set of processing parameters which will give good composite material properties. The shape of the conversion curves gives evidence of the differences in the cure kinetics of the two systems.
