Beeswax cleaning by solvent extraction of pesticides

2018

We set out to test if the methodology used to clean sheep wool wax (Lanolin) from pesticides could be used to clean beeswax as well. We first made an aggregate sample of brood comb wax from three different US beekeepers. Sub-samples of these aggregate wax samples were analyzed for pesticide contamination. The remaining wax, was then dissolved into hexane solution and run through four N, N-Dimethylformamide (DMF) washes. During these extractions, the pesticides partitioned into the DMF, and so were removed from the beeswax. Following the solvent extractions, the beeswax was tested again for pesticides. An average of 95% of the pesticide contamination was removed by the chemical wash procedur…

Multivariate sodalite Zeolitic Imidazolate frameworks: a direct solvent-free synthesis

2021

Different mixed-ligand Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks (ZIFs) with sodalite topology, i.e. isoreticular to ZIF-8, unachievable by conventional synthetic routes, have been prepared using a solvent-free methodology. In particular, the versatility of this method is demonstrated with three different metal centres (Zn, Co and Fe) and binary combinations of three different ligands (2-methylimidazole, 2-ethylimidazole and 2-methylbenzimidazole). One combination of ligands, 2-ethylimidazole and 2-methylbenzimidazole, results in the formation of SOD frameworks for the three metal centres despite this topology not being obtained for the individual ligands. Theoretical calculations confirm that this t…

Heterometallic Titanium–Organic Frameworks by Metal-Induced Dynamic Topological Transformations

2020

Reticular chemistry has boosted the design of thousands of metal and covalent organic frameworks for unlimited chemical compositions, structures, and sizable porosities. The ability to generate porous materials at will on the basis of geometrical design concepts is responsible for the rapid growth of the field and the increasing number of applications derived. Despite their promising features, the synthesis of targeted homo- and heterometallic titanium–organic frameworks amenable to these principles is relentlessly limited by the high reactivity of this metal in solution that impedes the controlled assembly of titanium molecular clusters. We describe an unprecedented methodology for the syn…

Application of conductometric and pH metric measurements in determining the kinetics and equilibrium parameters of the heterophasic ion exchange: Met…

2019

The application possibilities of conductometric and pH metric measurements in the description of the process of heterophasic ion exchange have been analysed, between metal cation (Zn, Cu) - proton, which occurs according to the formula, M+ + HR ⇄ H+ + MR, where R is an anion permanently bound in the sorbent. Kinetic models of the pseudo-first and pseudo-second order reactions, as well as the Langmuir isotherm model which describes the process equilibrium, have been used in mathematical presentations. It was confirmed that conductometric and pH metric measurements are equally effective in the assessment of such processes' parameters, in comparison with the expensive method of determining met…

Interaction of UO2(2+) with ATP in aqueous ionic media.

2005

Interaction of dioxouranium(VI) (uranyl) ion with ATP was studied by ligand/proton and metal/hydroxide displacement technique, at very low ionic strength and at I=0.15 mol L(-1), in aqueous Me4NCl and NaCl solutions, at t=25 degrees C. Measurements were carried out in the pH range 3-8.5, before the formation of precipitate. Computer analysis allowed us to find the quite stable species UO2(ATP)H2(0), UO2(ATP)H-, UO2(ATP)2-, UO2(ATP)2(6-), UO2(ATP)2H2(4-) and UO2(ATP)(OH)3- whose formation constants are (at I=0 mol L(-1)) logbeta(112)=18.21, logbeta(111)=14.70, logbeta(110)=9.14, logbeta(120)=12.84, logbeta(122)=24.82, and logbeta(11-1)=2.09, respectively. Different values were obtained in th…

FUNCTIONALIZED HALLOYSITE NANOTUBES FOR ENHANCED REMOVAL OF Hg2+ IONS FROM AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS

2021

AbstractWater is essential for humans, animals, and plants; pollutants, usually derived from anthropogenic activities, can have a serious effect on its quality. Heavy metals are significant pollutants and are often highly toxic to living organisms, even at very low concentrations. Among the numerous removal techniques proposed, adsorption onto suitable adsorbent materials is considered to be one of the most promising. The objective of the current study was to determine the effectiveness of halloysite nanotubes (HNT) functionalized with organic amino or thiol groups as adsorbent materials to decontaminate polluted waters, using the removal of Hg2+ ions, one of the most dangerous heavy metals…

Effect of UD carbon on the specific mechanical properties of glass mat composites for marine applications

2009

In this work the influence of a uniaxial carbon fabric layer on the mechanical performances of a glass mat/epoxy composite used for marine applications has been studied. All the structures have been made, at room temperature, by vacuum bagging technique. Tension and flexural tests have been carried out in order to evaluate the specific mechanical properties of the composite and to compare these with those of the marine aluminium alloy 6016-T4. The glass composites have higher specific strength but lower specific modulus than aluminium alloy. To increase the specific modulus of the composites, each layer of glass mat has been replaced with a layer of uniaxial carbon fabric. In addition, a s…

Metal complexes of the carbonic anhydrase inhibitor methazolamide (Hmacm). Crystal structure of the Zn(macm)2 (NH3)2. Anticonvulsant properties of th…

1995

Complexes of Co(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) with deprotonated methazolamide and ammonia are synthesized and characterized. The complex Zn(macm)2(NH3)2 crystallizes in the monoclinic C2/c space group with a = 13.468(1), b = 6.759(1), c = 23.014(2) A, beta = 90.27(1), and Z = 4. The structure was refined to R = 0.049 (Rw = 0.053). The Zn(II) ion is coordinated to two deprotonated sulfonamido nitrogen atoms of the macm- ligand and two nitrogen atoms of the ammonia ligands in a distorted tetrahedron. The Zn(macm)2(NH3)2 complex is shown to be a simple model for the methazolamide inhibition of CA. EHMO calculations applied to fractional coordinates of the Zn(macm)2(NH3)2 complex indicate that the at…

Electronic and vibrational signatures of the Au102p-MBA44 cluster

2011

Optical absorption of a gold nanocluster of 102 Au atoms protected by 44 para-mercaptobenzoic acid (p-MBA) ligands is measured in the range of 0.05-6.2 eV (mid-IR to UV) by a combination of several techniques for purified samples in solid and solution phases. The results are compared to calculations for a model cluster Au(102)(SMe)(44) based on the time-dependent density functional theory in the linear-response regime and using the known structure of Au(102)(p-MBA)(44). The measured and calculated molar absorption coefficients in the NIR-vis region are comparable, within a factor of 2, in the absolute scale. Several characteristic features are observed in the absorption in the range of 1.5-…
