Abstract The fatigue life of thermally sprayed Al2O3- and Cr2O3-based coatings has been studied under low-energy (0.7–5 mJ) impact conditions. A threshold impact energy and amount of repetitions the coatings can endure with said energy before catastrophic failure was obtained. The catastrophic failure was determined to occur when the fracture mode of the coating switched from brittle cone cracking to quasi-plastic radial cracking. The results are examined relative to the microstructural features along with other properties of the coatings - hardness and cavitation resistance. The experiment provided a new approach for a straightforward comparison of the micro-scale impact fatigue life of th…
Influence of applied strain on the microstructural corrosion of AlMg2 as-cast aluminium alloy in sodium chloride solution
2012
International audience; The corrosion behavior of ISO AlMg2 (AA5052) was studied at the microscale using the Electrochemical Microcell Technique. The influence of plastic deformation on the corrosion resistance of this alloy was also examined. After polishing, pitting at small copper-enriched precipitates and structural etching were observed. After deformation, numerous slip bands were found in grains. After 5.5% plastic strain, the global electrochemical behavior of samples was significantly affected. Pitting potential was decreased in sites containing slip bands or in sites with large strain gradients (measured using microgauges deposited by lithography).
Study of titanium alloy Ti6242S oxidation behaviour in air at 560°C: Effect of oxygen dissolution on lattice parameters
2020
Abstract High temperature oxidation of titanium alloy Ti6242S was studied in air at 560 °C up to 10000 h. Oxidation kinetics obeys a parabolic law (kp = 8.7 × 10−15 g². cm−4.s-1). Oxygen dissolution in the metal was found to represent between 80 and 90% of the total mass gain. Thin oxide scales are mainly composed of TiO2, in top of which some alumina is present. Titanium nitride was detected as a very thin layer at the outer part of the metallic substrate. Underneath, the oxygen dissolution area was found to reach the maximum brittleness after 1000 h of oxidation.
Corrosion behaviour of galvanized steel studied by electrochemical microprobes applied on low-angle cross sections
2018
Abstract The combined use of the microcapillary cell (MEC) and scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET) and low-angle cross sections was employed to elucidate the role of each coating region on the protection of the cut-edge corrosion of galvanized steels. Different compounds are involved in the blocking action of the corrosion products: Zincite (ZnO) on the steel substrate, hydrozincite (Zn5(OH)6(CO3)2) at the coating/steel interface, and Simonkolleite (Zn5(OH)8Cl2) and ZnO on the different coating regions in different proportions. The coating surface is also active at the initial stage and during long-term protection and thus, must be considered in experimental simulation of the cut-…
Study of the influence of dithizone as an eco-friendly corrosion inhibitor on the corrosion behaviour of AA7075 aluminium alloy in neutral chloride s…
2021
The effect of 1,5-diphenylthiocarbazone (dithizone) as an eco-friendly corrosion inhibitor for protection of AA7075 aluminium alloy in chloride containing aggressive environment was studied by means of weight-loss, electrochemical measurements and Raman spectroscopy. The results indicate that the addition of dithizone decreases significantly the corrosion rate of AA7075 alloy, with efficiency proportional to the inhibitor concentration. The polarization curves show that dithizone works as mixed-type inhibitor to slow down the anodic and cathodic reaction kinetic. The morphology revealed by scanning electron microscopy and the Raman spectroscopy analysis clearly shows that the inhibitor cont…
Droplet cell investigation of intergranular corrosion on AA2024
2017
An original method combining a droplet cell with direct optical interrogation of the reverse side of a 50μm thick foil AA2024 has been tested to evaluate the possible analysis of the current during intergranular corrosion tests. The foil microstructure and the selected orientation were suitable for recording the current generated during the propagation in volume of a well-defined grain boundary trace. Even if it is impossible to reach a charge and mass balance from these preliminary attempts, it was demonstrated that it is possible, despite hydrogen evolution, to record a current transient resulting from the full penetration of an intergranular path. Keywords: Intergranular corrosion, Alumi…
Influence of Glass Additions on Illitic Clay Ceramics
2020
A mixture of an illitic clay and waste glass was prepared and studied during the sintering process. The illitic clay, from the Liepa deposit (Latvia), and green glass waste (GW) were disintegrated to obtain a homogeneous mixture. The addition of disintegrated GW (5&ndash
Dismantling and electrochemical copper recovery from Waste Printed Circuit Boards in H2SO4–CuSO4–NaCl solutions
2019
Abstract The worldwide growing of electrical and electronic equipment makes increasingly urgent to find environmentally friendly treatments for e-waste. In this paper, the attention has been focused on i) the eco-friendly dismantling of the electronic components from Waste Printed Circuit Boards and ii) recovering of pure metallic copper, which is the most abundant metal and one of the most valuable in Printed Circuit Boards. After an experimental optimization study, we found that a solution containing 0.5 M H2SO4, 0.4 M CuSO4, and 4 M NaCl can be successfully used to disassemble the electronic components from the boards by leaching of all exposed metals. Air was blown into the leaching sol…
Analysis of bond strength between a nylon reinforcement structure and dental resins
2021
Made available in DSpace on 2021-06-25T10:30:27Z (GMT). No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2021-05-01 Background: Nylon is a polymer that its use to reinforce dental resins has shown positive results such as increased flexural strength. The aim of this study was to evaluate the bond strength between dental resins and a nylon reinforcement. Material and Methods: Forty cylindrical nylon blocks with 13 x 23 mm with 0.5% by volume of silica and 40 without were made. Half of the samples of each nylon composition were sandblasted with aluminum oxide (50µm) for 3 s (2.8 bar pressure, distance: 20 mm, incidence angle: 90o). On the nylon blocks, cylinders of chemically activated acrylic resin…
Effect of professional dental prophylaxis on the surface gloss and roughness of CAD/CAM restorative materials
2017
Background This study aimed to evaluate the effect of dental prophylaxis on the surface gloss and roughness of different indirect restorative materials for computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM): two types of CAD/CAM composite resin blocks (Shofu Block HC and Estelite Block) and two types of CAD/CAM ceramic blocks (IPS Empress CAD and Celtra DUO). Material and methods After polishing the CAD/CAM blocks and applying prophylaxis pastes, professional dental prophylaxis was performed using four different experimental protocols (n = 5 each): mechanical cleaning with Merssage Regular for 10 s four times (Group 1); four cycles of mechanical cleaning with Merssage Regular for …
