Tool Failure in Sequential Cutting of two Different Materials

1985

In this paper the authors show that the premature tool breakage, characteristic of interrupted cutting, can be enhanced in sequential cutting of two materials having different mechanical and chemical properties. The results of experimental investigations carried out in turning pieces consisting of medium carbon steel and aluminium alloy show that the time to failure is significatively lower than that occurring in machining only one of the two materials; moreover the morphology of the damage depends by the cutting order. Working with the sequence steel-Al alloy welding phenomena caused by strong deoxidation due to the latter material are observed; these phenomena cause the early development …

Friction behaviour of heat isolating coatings in machining: mechanical, thermal and energy-based considerations

2003

Abstract This paper deals with possible modifications of the frictional behaviour exhibited during the cutting process resulting from the influence of the most-commonly used heat isolating coatings deposited on a WC-Co carbide substrate. For this study, three- and four-layered coatings with intermediate Al 2 O 3 ceramic layer and a monolayer TiAlN coating, which offer superior thermal protection of the carbide substrate, were examined. Orthogonal cutting tests were carried out by end-turning medium carbon steel and austenitic stainless steel workpieces. The experimental study was aimed at determining the fundamental frictional characteristics: dimensions of the tool-chip contact area, the f…

Friction and wear properties of titanium and oxidised titanium in dry sliding against hardened C45 steel

2004

Abstract The aim of the paper is to present the results of conformal pin-on-disc tribological tests concerning the hard oxidised zone created in superficial layer of a titanium specimen sliding against the hardened to a hardness of 690 HV carbon C45 steel counterspecimen. Tribological testing was carried out at room temperature and at unlubricated conditions. After tests the structures and chemical compositions of the wear debris and worn surfaces were a subject of SEM and X-ray investigations. In comparison with the baseline the technical quality titanium/C45 steel couple, the wear and lifetime performance of the oxidised titanium/steel C45couple was markedly superior. Dominant wear debris…

Electrochemical Characterization of Archaeological Tin-Opacified Lead-Alkali Glazes and Their Corrosion Processes

2005

The electrochemical response of weathered and unweathered archaeological tin-opacified glazes attached to paraffin-impregnated graphite electrodes is described. Upon comparison with the square wave voltammetric response of SnO2, PbO and PbO2, Sn- and Pb-centered reduction processes can be characterized. Reduction of Sn(IV) involves the stepwise formation of solid Sn(II) and Sn metal, successively, at potentials of −0.08 and −0.55 V vs. AgCl/Ag. Reduction of network-modifier Pb(II) in glazes occurs at −0.5 V and is accompanied by the reduction of network-forming Pb(IV) at potentials ranging from +0.65 to +0.20 V, confirming the presence of such centers in glazes. Voltammetric data suggest th…

Non-destructive Approach to Multilayer Objects: XRF Analysis of Gilt and Enamelled Metals of the Medieval Cross of Rosciolo

2013

Abstract The penetration of X-rays is usually a limitation to the application of XRF analysis to multilayered materials, however it is possible, by software tools based on the fundamental parameters method, to overcome this problem and estimate thickness and composition of each layer. The cross of Rosciolo is a significant example of multilayer object: it is made of a wood core with attached gilt silver sheets and decorated with enamels. Measurements were carried out in situ and the PyMCA software was employed. The values of gilding thickness, Au/Hg ratios and Cu content in the silver sheets, and enamel's composition are discussed.

Flexural strength and microhardness of anterior composites after accelerated aging

2016

Background This study aimed to evaluate the flexural strength and microhardness of three different anterior composites after 10 000 thermocycles. Material and Methods The mechanical properties of a nano-fill composite (Filtek Ultimate Universal Restorative (FUR) (Enamel)), a nano-hybrid composite (Clearfil Majesty ES2 (ES2) (Enamel)), and a micro-hybrid composite (G Aenial Anterior (GAA)) were investigated in this study. For the microhardness test, 8-mm diameter and 2-mm thickness composite discs were used (n = 10), and for the flexural strength test, 25x2x2 mm bar-shaped specimens were prepared (n = 13). The specimens were tested at 24 h and after 10 000 thermocycles. Data were analyzed us…

Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of High-Pressure LixNa1-xTayNb1-yO3Solid Solution Perovskite Ceramics

2012

The effects of the temperature of synthesis and component concentration on microstructure of high-pressure LixNa1-xTayNb1-yO3 solid solution perovskite ceramics (х = 0.12, 0.17; у = 0; у ≥ 0.5) were studied. Original results of elastic properties of high-pressure LixNa1-xTayNb1-yO3 (х = 0.17; 0 ≤ у ≤ 0.5) solid solutions measured by contact probe techniques are reported. The observed decrease of the modulus of elasticity with increasing the sintering temperature of Li0,17Na0,83TayNb1-yO3 solid solutions is assumed to be related to conditions of re-crystallisation of disordered solid solutions at synthesis under high pressure.

Morphology and properties of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) filled with mesoporous silica (MCM-41) prepared by melt compounding

2016

This paper reports on the morphologies of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA)/mesoporous silica (MCM-41) composites prepared by melt compounding with various MCM-41 contents in the range of 0.1–5 wt%, the interactions between the polymer and filler in these composites, and their thermomechanical, mechanical and thermal degradation properties. The composites formed transparent films at low filler loadings (\0.5 wt%) because of well-dispersed, unagglomerated particles. The presence of polymer did not alter the pore dimensions in the MCM-41 structure and it maintained its hexagonal structure, even though the polymer chains partially penetrated the pores during composite preparation. The PMMA inte…

Evolution of the bearing failure map of pinned flax composite laminates aged in marine environment

2020

Abstract Aim of the present paper is to evaluate how the bearing behavior of pinned flax composites can be influenced by their exposition to critical environment such as marine one. To this scope, flax fibers/epoxy pinned laminate was exposed up to 60 days to salt-fog environment, according to ASTM B 117 standard. In particular, samples having different hole diameter (D), laminate width (W), and hole center to laminate free edge distance (E) have been tested under single lap bearing tests at varying the aging exposition time. Following this procedure, an experimental 2D failure map clustering main failure modes was created by placing the experimental results in the plane E/D versus W/D rati…
