A comparative study of fatigue behaviour of flax/epoxy and glass/epoxy composites

Experimental investigations on flax and glass fabrics reinforced epoxy specimens, i.e. FFRE and GFRE, submitted to fatigue tests are presented in this paper. Samples having [0/90]3S and [±45]3S stacking sequences, with similar fibre volume fractions have been tested under tension–tension fatigue loading. The specific stress-number of cycles to failure (S–N) curves, show that for the [0/90]3S specimens, FFRE have lower fatigue endurance than GFRE, but the [±45]3S FFRE specimens offer better specific fatigue endurance than similar GFRE, in the studied life range (<2 × 10^6). Influence of the microstructure and laser shock processing (LSP) on the corrosion behaviour of the AA2050-T8 aluminium alloy

International audience; The corrosion behaviour of AA2050-T8 was studied after polishing and after laser shock processing (LSP) treatment using the electrochemical microcell technique and the SVET. After polishing, pitting at constituent particles and intergranular corrosion were observed. By contrast, no intergranular corrosion developed after LSP. Microcell measurements revealed that LSP increases the pitting potential. SVET measurements revealed that local anodic currents are systematically lower on LSP-treated surfaces than on polished ones. International audience; In the present paper, the micro-electrochemical behaviour of AA2050-T8 in 0.1 M NaCl was first studied after polishing by means of local electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and field-emission scanning electron microscopy/electron dispersive spectroscopy (FE-SEM/EDS). The influence of ageing in air and LSP was then investigated. Ageing in air for three months led to an increase in the charge transfer resistance. This was clearly observed in sites surrounding constituent particles where the charge transfer resistance was in the order of 1 MΩ cm2 (instead of 10-3 MΩ cm2 after polishing). The fracture performance of rubberised bitumen in addition to one pre-treated with a Warm Mix Additive (Sasobit®) was investigated using different test methods measuring different damage mechanisms. Two Recycled Tyre Rubber (RTR) modifiers together with two base binders were blended in the laboratory to produce various combinations of Recycled Tyre Rubber Modified Bitumens (RTR-MBs). The first RTR is a standard recycled polymer derived from discarded truck and passenger car tyres by ambient grinding. The second RTR consists of 100% recycled truck tyres derived by cryogenic grinding and pre-treated with special oil and WMA to allow further decrease of asphalt mixture production temperatures.…
High Temperature Oxidation of TiAl and TiAl8Nb Alloys in Air

Isothermal oxidation of two g-TiAl-based intermetallic alloys: Ti48Al and Ti46Al8Nb alloys was studied in synthetic air at 1073-1223 K for up to 240 hrs. Mass change per unit area for the oxidized samples followed approximately the parabolic rate law. The kp values for the studied temperature interval were in the range from 7.2×10-13 to 1.8×10-11 g2cm-4s-1. The activation energy for oxidation of Ti48Al alloy in air at 1073-1223 K was Ea = 165±12 kJ/mol. Niobium addition to Ti48Al alloy in the amount of 8% increased its oxidation resistance. Abstract The tritium release from ceramic materials of the HCPB under real DEMO operating conditions will depend not only on temperature and neutron flux but also on an intense magnetic field (MF) of 7–9 T. The delay in the tritium release induced by the MF is proportional to the grain size of the ceramics, the squared MF intensity and the abundance ratio of charged tritium forms (T + , T − ) in the grain volume of the ceramics. Abstract Effect of external magnetic field (MF) on important physicochemical processes in ceramic blanket materials, the Li4SiO4 (FZK) and Li2TiO3 (CEA) ceramic pebbles, was studied. Stoichiometric amounts of the radiation-induced defects (RD) of the electron and hole type form at radiolysis of the ceramic materials. Colloid lithium forms only in Li4SiO4 under irradiation at the temperature 423–473 K and the dose 10–20 MGy. The magnetic field increases the radiolysis efficiency by 20–25% in both materials. A system of pultruded carbon fibre-reinforced plastics micro-tubes is used for self-healing simulation in laminated polymer composite. The system consists of a package of micro-tubes, placed in the symmetry plane of the GFR/epoxy laminate stack. Healing agent is a mixture of the epoxy resin and hardener. The healing agent releases and penetrates into the cracks after the composite is damaged by the quasi-static indentation. The specimens are healed at 30℃ for 24 h. Rectangular specimens notched under ASTM D2733 have been subjected to tensile test to determine interlaminar shear strength.
