Fatigue Crack Growth in Titanium and Aluminium Alloys under Bending
2007
The paper contains results of investigations of the crack growth in plane specimens made of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy and AlCu4Mg1 aluminium alloy under cyclic bending. The tests were done on specimens with the stress concentrators being one-sided sharp notch. On the fractures there have been observed first of all transcrystalline cracks through the α phase grains for both materials.
Influence of sintering temperature on microstructure of Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 ceramics
2021
Abstract Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 (NBT)-based compositions are among the most promising lead-free ferroelectrics. Although studies of modification of NBT-based compositions’ properties are a hot topic, there has been very little attention paid to their characterization from the standpoint of ceramics and the process of producing them. Here, we report on comprehensive analysis of the influence of sintering temperature across a wide temperature range (1020–1240 °C) on the complete microstructure and chemical content of NBT ceramics produced by solid state sintering, which is dominating in producing of NBT ceramics. Thorough attention is paid to the grain size distribution, porosity, and inhomogeneity. …
Effect of hydrothermal ageing on the thermal and delamination fracture behaviour of CFRP composites
2014
Abstract This work investigates the hydrothermal ageing behaviour of a carbon fibre reinforced laminate and its epoxy matrix in bulk conditions. A model DGEBA epoxy is employed, and water uptake and dynamic mechanical thermal (DMTA) analyses have been performed on both the composites and bulk resin. Fracture toughness of the bulk resin has been measured, evidencing a substantially unmodified critical stress intensity factor KIC, although the evidence of plasticisation effects given by DMTA. Interlaminar Mode I fracture toughness of the composite showed a variable trend towards slight decreases or slight increases, according to the prevailing toughening or embrittling mechanisms activated by…
Radiation stability of long-term annealed bi-phasic advanced ceramic breeder pebbles
2019
Abstract Advanced ceramic breeder pebbles consisting of Li4SiO4 and additions of Li2TiO3 were tested regarding their long-term thermal and to their radiation stability. As-prepared and long-term annealed pebbles were irradiated with accelerated electrons (up to 6 MGy) to investigate the formation of radiation-induced defects and radiolysis products caused by ionizing radiation. By using Raman spectroscopy the formation of significant amounts of radiolysis products can be excluded. Electron spin resonance spectrometry revealed several paramagnetic radiation-induced defects, such as HC2 centres ( SiO 4 3 - and TiO 3 - ), E’ centres ( SiO 3 3 - and TiO 3 3 - ), Ti 3 + centres and peroxide radi…
Crystal structures of new ternary compounds in RE–Pt–Pb and RE–Au–Pb systems (RE=rare earth metal)
2012
Abstract The crystal structures of the compounds RE 2 Pt 2 Pb (RE = Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Lu; Mo 2 FeB 2 structure type, space group P 4/ mbm , Pearson code tP10 ), REPtPb (RE = La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm; ZrNiAl structure type, space group P 6 ¯ 2 m , Pearson code hP9 ), RE 2 Au 2 Pb (RE = Y, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb and Lu; Er 2 Au 2 Sn structure type, space group P 4 2 / mnm , Pearson code tP20 ) and REAuPb (RE = Tm, Yb and Lu) were determined using X-ray powder diffraction.
Preparation and structural study of sodium germanium phosphate-sodium titanium phosphate solid solutions. I. Evolution of structure with composition
1993
Compounds NaM2IV(PO4)3 with M = Ge, Ti present the [NZP]-type structure, with a low thermal expansion. The space group at room temperature for the compound NaGe2(PO4)3 is R3, whereas for the compound NaTi2(PO4)3 is R3c. Evolution of the structure with composition in NaGe2(PO4)3 NaTi2(PO4)3 system is discussed. The space group and lattice parameters were determined for NaGe2−xTix(PO4)3 (0 < x < 2) solid solutions, prepared by ceramic method. Compositions rich in Ge(IV) (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) show the R3 space group, whereas for those rich in Ti(IV) (1.2 ≤ x ≤ 2) the space group is R3c. The variation of the lattice parameters with composition agreed with these results since it showed a change in its t…
Studies of TiO2 Ceramics Structure after Thermal Treatment at Different Conditions
2014
The present work describes results of investigation of structural characteristics of TiO2 ceramics, depending on temperature and thermal treatment conditions by using a variety of characterization techniques. TiO2 ceramics was prepared by extrusion method and developed as a material for electrodes for innovative water treatment technologies. It was shown that non-stoichiometric phase TiO1.95 was observed after thermal treatment of TiO2 ceramics under high vacuum conditions.
Measurement of the surface resistivity and electrical conductivity of carbon nanotube sheets using the resonant post-method
2016
Abstract The dielectric post-resonant measurement method is extended to characterize the conduction properties of carbon nanotube sheets in the GHz frequency range ( 3 GHz f 20 GHz ) without the need for external contacts or the necessity of carbon coating. Three low-loss reference dielectrics ( TiO 2 , BaTi 4 O 9 , Teflon) with known dielectric properties are used. Conductivity values of various metals (steel, lead, brass, aluminium, copper) of the order 106–107 S/m were measured to show the suitability of the method. The electrical conductivity of the carbon nanotube sheets could be determined to approximately 1.7·105 S/m.
FSW of AA2139-T8 Butt joints for aeronautical applications
2011
The effect of process parameters on mechanical and microstructural properties of AA 2139 T8 joints produced by friction stir welding (FSW) was analysed by means of statistical tools. Three different parameters were taken into account: angular speed ( ω), welding speed ( va), and plunging depth ( p); each of them was varied on three levels. Forces and temperatures achieved during the welding were monitored and analysed for all joints. An accurate microstructural analysis was performed: the occurrence of some remarkable defects, typical of FSW, such as tunnel or lack of penetration, was related to actual process parameters adopted. The extension of each FSW characteristic zone was measured a…
Analysis of Material Formability in Incremental Forming
2002
Abstract Incremental forming is an innovative sheet metal forming technology in which a blank is plastically deformed through the progressive action of a small-size punch, whose movement is governed by a CNC machine. In this way the tool locally deforms the material through an almost pure stretching deformation mechanics. The paper is focused on material formability in incremental forming. Several tests were developed, aimed to the achievement of different straining conditions in the material and consequently to the determination of Forming Limit Diagrams for progressive forming operations. The features and the application of such FLD are discussed in the paper.
