Self assembled hydrophobic nanoclusters of poly(methyl methacrylate) embedded into polyvinyl alcohol based hydrophilic matrix: Preparation and water …
2009
Hydrophilic matrices containing nanosized clusters of hydrophilic moieties have demonstrated potential applications in biomedical field. A novel hydrogel containing nanosized domains (20–35 nm) of hydrophobic moieties of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) was prepared by grafting crosslinked poly(acrylic acid-co-methyl methacrylate) chains onto polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) backbone using an efficient redox system. The graft copolymerization process was investigated to observe the influence of gel components on the kinetic parameters of grafting such as rate of grafting (Rg), grafting yield (Gy) and grafting efficiency (Ge). The prepared graft nanohydrogel was evaluated for its water sorption poten…
Stress-Strain State in the Zone of Load Transfer in a Composite Specimen under Uniaxial Tension
2004
The stress-strain state in the zone of load transfer in a uniaxially stretched specimen made of a unidirectional epoxy carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) is investigated. A parametric analysis of the influence of geometric and mechanical characteristics of the specimen on its stress-strain state is performed by means of finite-element modeling. The parameters allowing us to significantly reduce the dangerous concentration of transverse and tangential stresses are revealed. The mechanical tensile characteristics of a high-strength pultruded unidirectional CFRP are determined experimentally, and the size effect of its strength is estimated.
Measurement of dynamic characteristics of latex foams by the antiresonance method
2000
Measuring and calculation methods for the dynamic characteristics of tubular specimens of low-modulus latex foams and composites based on them, under longitudinal vibrations in a low-frequency region (up to 200 Hz), are developed. The method is based on the effect of antiresonance. Data on the influence of the basic formulation-processing factors on the dynamic characteristics (gelatination time and content of the plasticizer and chopped fibers) are presented. The results obtained can be used to choose the composition of latex foams for lining acoustic channels, injectors, ejectors, and phase inverters, as well as to control products quality. This method can be applied directly to full-size…
Progressive cracking mastercurves of the transverse ply in a laminate
2009
In this study, progressive cracking of a transverse layer in a cross-ply composite laminate subjected to tensile loading is considered. Using the results of a probabilistic cracking model, approximate relations for crack density as a function of stress are derived for initiation-controlled and propagation-controlled cracking. It is shown that the crack density evolution in the transverse ply can be represented by a mastercurve in suitably normalized coordinates. The mastercurve approach is applied to progressive cracking in glass/epoxy laminates. POLYM. COMPOS., 2009. © 2008 Society of Plastics Engineers
Modelling polycarbonate synthesis rates on the example of bulk heteropolyaddition of diphenyl carbonate and bisphenol A diglycidyl ether
2016
This paper investigates the effects of increased reaction mixture viscosity on the kinetics of linear polymer creation in a bulk polyaddition process of diphenyl carbonate and bisphenol A diglycidyl ether. The paper presents a method for solving a system of bulk polyaddition of diphenyl carbonate and bisphenol A diglycidyl ether process balance equations, allowing the determinatiof the process kinetic parameters. Determination of polymerisation reaction kinetic parameters was also made possible by the use of the so-called partial reaction rate constant. Such an approach enabled a significant simplification of the mathematical expressions describing the heteropolyaddition process and provide…
Thermodesorption of LB-multilayers of metal stearates
1991
Thermodesorption of stearate multilayers containing different metal ions was investigated by Interference-enhanced Reflection (IeR) and Nomarsky microscopy. Heating of samples in air leads to desorption of stearyl chains and to formation of metal oxide clusters. A new approach to build controlled structures was made by preparing a surface with neighbouring hydrophobic and hydrophilic areas. It is shown that arranging inorganic particles in a predetermined way is possible.
TI: Compatibilization of PA6/rubber blends by using an oxazoline functionalized rubber
2003
The compatibilization of blends of polyamide 6 with a nitrile butadiene rubber has been investigated. The procedure consists of two steps: modification of the nitrile groups of the rubber into oxazoline in the melt through condensation of ethanolamine with formation of a molecule of ammonia, followed by use of the modified rubber as a compatibilizing precursor which is melt mixed with the polyamide to produce the compatibilized blend. The modification reaction has been detected by NMR analysis and a rheological, mechanical and thermomechanical characterization has been carried out on the all the blends. The results indicate that the modification reaction occurs but the conversion of nitrile…
Modelling the Influence of Nanoparticles in the Phase Behaviour of an Epoxy/Polystyrene Mixture, 2
2007
The influences of nanoparticle size and concentration on the thermodynamic behaviour of epoxy/polystyrene blends are evaluated in the framework of Ginzburg's simple analytical theory. Two approaches have been employed: NPEPO (for particles coated with epoxy groups) and NPFEN (for particles coated with phenyl groups). Using NPEPO, the particles are found to prefer the phase richer in epoxy, whereas the opposite occurs for NPFEN. The particles size significantly influences blend compatibility. When the particle radius Rp is about the same size as the radius of gyration R g of PS, the compatibility of blends increases with particle concentration, whereas for R p > R g , higher particle concent…

Influence of the Copolymer Content on the Miscibility, Phase Behaviour and Morphology of a DGEBA/Polystyrene/Styrene-co-Maleic Anhydride Ternary Blend
2009
The miscibility, phase behaviour and morphology of ternary systems, formed by a DGEBA-based epoxy resin, polystyrene (PS) and styrene-co-maleic anhydride (SMA) copolymers have been investigated through phase diagrams. The analysis has been done in the absence and in the presence of 4,4'-methylene bis(2,6-diethyl aniline) (MDEA) as curing agent. In both cases, the influence of the copolymer content on blend compatibility, has been discussed. The results show that miscibility is enhanced by the presence of SMA copolymer in the blend and as the MA content in the copolymer is increased (from 7 to 14wt.-%), due to specific H-bonding interactions between the H-donor hydroxyl groups on the epoxy r…
