Reducing the irreducible: Dispersed metal atoms facilitate reduction of irreducible oxides.

2021

Oxide reducibility is a central concept quantifying the role of the support in catalysis. While reducible oxides are often considered catalytically active, irreducible oxides are seen as inert supports. Enhancing the reducibility of irreducible oxides has, however, emerged as an effective way to increase their catalytic activity while retaining their inherent thermal stability. In this work, we focus on the prospect of using single metal atoms to increase the reducibility of a prototypical irreducible oxide, zirconia. Based on extensive self-consistent DFT+U calculations, we demonstrate that single metal atoms significantly improve and tune the surface reducibility of zirconia. Detailed ana…

Mechano-activated processes on metal oxide interfaces at room temperature

1997

Solid state bonding of metal with oxide at room temperature have been studied. The properties of Al/SiO 2 , Al/glass, Al/MgO, Mg/SiO 2 , In/glass interfaces as well as to ascertain the mechanism of formation of interfaces. Structure, composition and mechanical properties were investigated using auger-spectroscopy (AES), secondary-ion mass-spectrometry (SIMS), electron microscopy and precision microindentation. The results showed marked adhesion not all over contact area but only at zones of the maximum shear stress. The effect of mechanoactivation is considered from the viewpoints of both structure formation and physico- chemical interaction of nonequilibrium systems. As a result of relaxat…

Smart optically active VO2 nanostructured layers applied in roof-type ceramic tiles for energy efficiency

2016

Abstract The capability to control in an smart way the infrared reflectance to environmental temperature variations can be achieved with thermochromic materials like VO2. In this paper, we report the application of VO2 on ceramic tiles aiming to control the reflected infrared radiation on smart roofs and thus improving the energy efficiency, which is associated to the reduction of the carbon dioxide emissions. The VO2 nanoparticles have been produced by hydrothermal synthesis assisted by microwave irradiation, providing a new, quicker and cleaner production route. Afterwards, the VO2 nanoparticles were transferred to the surface of ceramic glassy tiles, which were prepared through dispersin…

The impact of different surface treatments on the shear bond strength of orthodontic metal brackets applied to different CAD/CAM composites

2020

Background To investigate the shear bond strength (SBS) of orthodontic metal brackets applied to different CAD/CAM composites treated with different surface treatments. Material and Methods Specimens of two CAD/CAM composites were obtained of Lava Ultimate (LU; n=60) and Brilliant Crios (BC; n=60) which were randomly separated into six subgroups (n=10) according to the surface treatment: control (CTL); sandblasting (SB); sandblasting and silane (SBSL); hydrofluoric acid (HF); hydrofluoric acid and silane (HFSL); and Monobond Etch&Prime (MEP). The mandibular central incisor metal brackets were bonded with a light-cure adhesive. The SBS data were analyzed using the two-way analysis of varianc…

The effect of short polyethylene fiber with different weight percentages on diametral tensile strength of conventional and resin modified glass ionom…

2017

Background The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of polyethylene fiber on diametral tensile strength of conventional and resin modified glass ionomer cements. Material and Methods 60 specimens in 6 groups (n=10) were prepared. In group 1 conventional glass ionomer (Fuji GC) and in group 2 resin modified glass ionomer (Fuji LC) were as control groups. In group 3 and 4 conventional glass ionomers mixed with short polyethylene fibers in proportion of 1 wt% and 3 wt%, respectively. In fifth and sixth groups, resin modified glass ionomer and short polyethylene fibers were mixed in 1 and 3% wt, respectively. Samples were prepared in a round brass mold (6.5×2.5 mm). After thermo-cycl…

Tensile strength and impact strength of color modified acrylic resin reinforced with titanium dioxide nanoparticles

2017

Background Poor mechanical properties are among the main limitations of acrylic resins. Addition of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles to acrylic resin has been shown to improve its mechanical properties with an adverse effect on its color. Thus, this study sought to assess the tensile and impact strength of a color modified heat cure acrylic resin reinforced with TiO2 nanoparticles. Material and Methods In this in vitroexperimental study, 1wt% TiO2 nanoparticles were added to SR Triplex Hot heat-cure acrylic resin powder and mixed. Pigments and color fibers were also added and 18 samples were fabricated of this paste for tensile and impact strength testing (n=9) according to ISO5271. Ei…

Fractographic study of the behavior of different ceramic veneers on full coverage crowns in relation to supporting core materials

2013

Objectives: To observe porcelain veneer behavior of zirconia and metal-ceramic full coverage crowns when subjected to compression testing, comparing zirconia cores to metal cores. Study Design: The porcelain fracture surfaces of 120 full coverage crowns (60 with a metal core and 60 with a zirconia core) subjected to static load (compression) testing were analyzed. Image analysis was performed using macroscopic processing with 8x and 12x enlargement. Five samples from each group were prepared and underwent scanning electron microscope (SEM) analysis in order to make a fractographic study of fracture propagation in the contact area and composition analysis in the most significant areas of the…

Dielectric relaxation and polaronic hopping in Mn-substituted LaSrNiO4 nickelates prepared by mechanical milling method

2016

Abstract The structures, microstructures and dielectric properties of LaSrNi1−xMnxO4 (x = 0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3 and 0.5) ceramics synthetized by mechanical milling followed by heat treatment were studied. One single tetragonal phase was revealed in all compounds. Structural parameters were obtained by Rietveld refinement. The substitution of Ni ions by Mn produces a variation of the lattice parameters but no phase change is observed. The surface morphology and elemental analysis of these samples were respectively investigated by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray technique (EDS). Giant dielectric response was observed in these ceramics, and at least two relaxations we…

Retention strength of ball-attachment titanium post for removable partial denture or overdenture

2020

Aim: To evaluate the retention of an endodontic titanium post with a spherical head for removable partial denture or overdenture attachment according to surface treatment type. Methods: Sixty healthy single-rooted teeth, sectioned at the enamel/cementum junction, were treated endodontically and steadily fixed in the embedding acrylic resin. The titanium posts were subdivided into four groups: control, no surface treatment (Ctrl); posts with macro-retentive grooves (MR); air abrasion of the post surface (AB); and posts with macro-retentive grooves and air abrasion of the post surface (MR+AB). The posts were luted in the root canal using self-adhesive dual resin cement. Pull-out testing was p…
